The international touring exhibition "Die gute Form" was conceived by MAx Bill on behalf of the Swiss Werkbund SWB and was shown for the first time in 1949 at the Basel Mustermesse trade fair. The exhibition consisted of 80 dispay panels, designed by Bill, presenting a selection of consumer goods from all over the world and chosen by him as examples of good design. The show caused some upset in Switzerland and fueled heated debates abroad. But it also exerted a wide-reaching influence-for example, on the way in which consumer goods were perceived.

Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, the State Hermitage Museum is one of the world’s great museums. Occupying a large complex of six historic buildings along the Palace Embankment in St. Petersburg, its collections contain over three million items, including one of the largest collections of paintings in the world. The decision to convert the eastern wing of the General Staff Building into a museum of nineteenth- and twentieth-century art to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the institution’s founding led to an international architectural competition.

Exploring the origins and early days of the Guggenheim Museum--when it was first known as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting--this volume reveals for the first time the Guggenheim's complex architectural history, drawing on extensive correspondence between Founding Director Hilla Rebay and artist Rudolf Bauer (whose work the Guggenheim collected exhaustively) to reveal the leading role Bauer played in envisioning the collection and the museum. It also explores Rebay's unusual curatorial conceptions and framing practices at the museum's early locations. Karol Vail provides biographies of many lesser-known artists in the museum's collection, while others discuss the museum's early history and ambitions.
