Résumé:
In the years of reconstruction and economic boom that followed the Second World War, the domestic sphere encountered new expectations regarding social behaviour, modes of living, and forms of dwelling. This book brings together an international group of scholars from architecture, design, urban planning, and interior design to reappraise mid-twentieth century modern life, offering a timely reassessment of culture and the economic and political effects on civilian life. This collection contains essays that examine the material of art, objects, and spaces in the context of practices of dwelling over the long span of the postwar period. It asks what role material objects, interior spaces, and architecture played in quelling or fanning the anxieties of modernism’s ordinary denizens, and how this role informs their legacy today.

Résumé:
This book explores what it means for development activists to practise architecture on a global scale, and provides a blueprint for developing architectural practices based on reciprocal working methods. The content is based on real situations - through extended field research and contacts with architecture schools and architects, as well as participating NGOs. It demonstrates that the ability to produce appropriate and sustainable design is increasingly relevant, whether in the field of disaster relief, longer-term development or wider urban contexts, both in rich countries and poor countries.

"Designed for Habitat presents potent evidence of the link between design and dignity, particularly in the context of low-income housing. It captures a crucial trifecta of perspectives - Habitat for Humanity leaders, homeowners, and designers. Their powerful, sometimes explosive stories aren't sugarcoated by Hinson and Miller; the pair makes clear that these collaborations present huge challenges for often-opposing cultures, but can yield unprecedented payoffs. With America's housing in a perpetual state of crisis, such partnerships are more important than ever. This highly-instructive, landmark book is an unmatched guide for future collaborations. It communicates so clearly and so convincingly to Habitat and its homeowners that they too deserve good design; indeed, we all do." -John Cary, Author, The Power of Pro Bono; Founder & Editor, PublicInterestDesign.org

Résumé:
Our global thirst for energy and raw materials is increasing all the time. Year after year, humanity exhausts large quantities of mineral resources; the areas of the world in which we drill and dig for oil, gas, coal, gravel, clay and ore are becoming more and more remote, and the range of resources demanded is expanding constantly. Lusitania is a prime example of this kind of resource depletion. Unrestrained open-pit mining during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has devastated the region, and ten years ago this "wounded landscape" became the subject of an International Building Exhibition dedicated to providing creative designs for a post-mining landscape. What are the possibilities of such landscapes? What methods and processes may be applied in regions beyond Lusatia? In Redesigning Wounded Landscapes, ten authors explore these questions, looking at the region and the project from a wide range of perspectives.

This issue is part of a project curated by the participants of de Appel Curatorial Programme 07/08, who have hijacked the journal to encapsulate their intentions (shared, stolen or otherwise discovered). The journal explores the many intersections between circulation and storytelling.

On 13 January 1958, the grotesquely disfigured body of a man was discovered near Lake Sembako in Japan. Two investigators from Tokyo came to help the local police in resolving what at first appeared to be a banal case, but which soon proved to be something more complicated. For the first time, a photographer was authorized to accompany the police to document the investigation. Press photographer Watabe Yukichi (1924-1993) followed the inspectors as they questioned witnesses (workers in a tannery factory, local police officers) and pounded the streets of the most insalubrious neighborhoods in Tokyo - its bars, bridges, alleyways and hospitals - in search of the killer. Like the haunted film stills of a newly discovered noir classic, Watabe's images record much more than simply a police investigation, and reveal a Tokyo of the 1950s in a way that has rarely been depicted.

Résumé:
Richard Sennett has spent an intellectual lifetime exploring how humans live in cities. In this pair of essays he visits two of the world's greatest cities at crucial moments in their history to meditate on the condition of exile in both geographical and psychic space: the Jewish Ghetto of Renaissance Venice, where state-imposed outsiderdom was translated into a rich community identity; and nineteenth-century Paris, a magnet for political exiles, where the experience of displacement seeped into the city's culture at large.
