Résumé:
A compelling survey of Texas houses that draw both on the heritage of pioneer ranches and on the twentieth-century design principles of modernism. Helen Thompson and Casey Dunn, the writer/photographer team that produced "Marfa Modern", join forces again to investigate Texas modernism. The juxtaposition of the sleek European forms with a gritty Texas spirit generated a unique brand of modernism that is very basic to the culture of the state today. Its roots are in the early Texas pioneer houses, whose long, low profiles express an efficiency that is basic to the modern idiom. This Texas-centric style is focused on the relationship of the house to the site, the materials it is made of--most often local stone and wood--and the way the building functions in the harsh Texas climate.

Résumé:
Harald Szeemann (1933-2005) was one of the most influential curators of the recent past. An entire generation of curators has been inspired by his independent way of creating exhibitions and his emphatic method of presenting contemporary art. In retrospect, Szeemann's infallible interest in artistic loners with strong attitudes and powerful personalities seems like a vehement contradiction of the kind of art market that focuses on trends and movements. This volume describes the "Szeemann principle," the visions of an enlightened artistic curator, and provides an overview of the most important stations of his singular curatorial career: the legendary exhibitions "When Attitudes Become Form" and documenta 5, the great thematic explorations such as "Bachelor Machines" and "Der Hang zum Gesamtkunstwerk," his discovery of the young Eastern European scenes, and the Biennials in Venice, Lyon, and Seville.

Résumé:
This complete monograph presents 89 of Richard Meier's buildings, documenting the principal stages of Meier's career in chronological order, from his early private homes and residential buildings - such as the two large complexes of Twin Parks, Bronx, New York, and the Bronx Development Center - to recent major projects in the United States and in several European countries. Among the well-known works in this volume are the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Church of Dives in Misericordia, Rome. In the early 1970s, Meier was one of the "New York Five," an informal group of East Coast architects who shared a preference for new and original contributions to the modern tradition and shaped an alternative to the "gray" architecture that dominated highrise East Coast buildings at the time.

Résumé:
This interdisciplinary account of the different types of flexible living presents work by Modernist and contemporary architects and designers such as; Charles and Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller, Jean Prouve, Joe Colombo and Shigeru Ban, contrasting them with the flexible houses and installations featured in non-European cultures. In view of the on-going globalisation of life, the traditional distinction between sedentary and nomad lifestyles has been undermined. Due to the growing significance of transport the sedentary populations are as mobile as the nomads, just as the latter now set up permanent camp - in fact, the two ways of life have mutually influenced each other over the course of time. This title also sheds light on the causes and effects of mobile living from a sociological and psychological viewpoint.

Résumé:
Since the early buildings in the 1950s at Udine in Friuli, Gino Valle has been recognised by international critics as one of the most original and creative European architects of the post-war period. His artistic talent, associated with a great intellectual curiosity and with a genuine passion for the experimentation of new construction systems, led Valle to develop an architectural work resolutely open and multiform. Whether in the smaller towns of Friuli and Veneto or in metropolitan centres as New York, Paris or Berlin, Valle realised a wide range of important works: social housing and banks, factories and offices, town halls and courthouses. These buildings make valuable contributions to debates concerning the relationship between new architecture and historic surroundings, between industrial and open landscape, between urban design and architectural intervention.

Résumé:
Built and designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe 1928-1930, the Tugendhat House in Brno / Czech Republic is one of the most significant buildings of European modernism. In 2001, UNESCO added the house to the List of World Cultural Heritage Sites. In this third, updated edition, the authors give personal and historic insights relating to the house; also documenting aspects pertaining to art history and conservation-science studies. The comprehensive description and in-depth discussion of the materials used is a special feature in this field of research. The appeal of this monograph lies in the publication of photographs from the family archive which, for the first time, show the house in its lived-in condition. The experimental artistic color photographs by Fritz Tugendhat are among the pioneering achievements of amateur photography.

Résumé:
How a small photography club gave birth to modernist photography in Brazil. Published in conjunction with the first major museum exhibition of Brazilian modernist photography outside of Brazil, ''Fotoclubismo'' presents the groundbreaking creative achievements of São Paulo’s Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante, a group of amateur photographers founded in 1939 that is essentially unknown today to European and North American audiences. The vast majority of FCCB members pursued photography outside of their day jobs as lawyers, businessmen, accountants, journalists, engineers, biologists and bankers, but they were nonetheless quite serious about their artistic ambition. Their radical experimentations with process and form and their determination to distill inventive compositions from everyday life contributed to their esteemed reputation within an active international postwar scene—a status that has been all but forgotten.

Résumé:
In this book, Brenna Bhandar examines how modern property law contributes to the formation of racial subjects in settler colonies and to the development of racial capitalism. Examining both historical cases and ongoing processes of settler colonialism in Canada, Australia, and Israel and Palestine, Bhandar shows how the colonial appropriation of indigenous lands depends upon ideologies of European racial superiority as well as upon legal narratives that equate civilized life with English concepts of property. In this way, property law legitimates and rationalizes settler colonial practices while it racializes those deemed unfit to own property. The solution to these enduring racial and economic inequities, Bhandar demonstrates, requires developing a new political imaginary of property in which freedom is connected to shared practices of use and community rather than individual possession.

Tracing an unbroken line, the eye is guided from one sweeping landscape to the next without doubting their separateness in location and origin, showing the interconnectedness of distant environments, opening up conversations between the different (political) landscapes in which we live. Renate Aller is a German living in New York. Her large-scale photographs are held in numerous museums including the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D. C., the Yale University Art Gallery, the George Eastman Museum, the New York Historical Society Museum, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle, and the Parrish Art Museum.
