Finally, a book that shows iconic modern furniture in real (read: lived-in) home environments, rather than sterile, I-don’t-believe- someone-actually-lives-here situations! This catalog from design giant Vitra Inc. is used as a marketing tool for furniture sales, and it’s beautifully persuasive, proving that these classic pieces of design can work in the real world. Put an Eames lounge chair in front of a disheveled pile of records, a Nelson sunburst clock over a platter of leeks and carrots, or a Panton plastic chair at the bottom of a swimming pool with enthusiastic children using it for a diving platform – you’ll understand that fine design works anywhere. Just ask the black and white kitty curled up in the Nelson Coconut Chair. A handsome full-color volume.

For this site-specific work at Japan's National Art Museum in Osaka, Christian Philipp Müller tracked down 54 different types of chairs in use at the museum. He then presented them on a colorful, stair-step platform in chronological order by the date of design, and created a typology of usage. The book also includes photos of the chairs in use, product catalogs and storage conditions. A fine commentary on the current fetish of the chair as design object, and our nostalgia for these familiar shapes memorialized as high-class consumer goods. With contribitions by Christian Philipp Müller, Hiroyuki Nakanishi, Christian Witt-Döring and Bennett Simpson.

Résumé:
"The local price of a cheeseburger, medium Coke and French fries is the quickest way to estimate the cost of living in each country," writes artist Francis Alys in Report (Not Announcement). "There's always everything has been done and nothing has been tried at the same time," writes Karl Holmqvist. Both observations are part of this intriguing book by artists, curators, and critics reflecting on traveling in many ways: their own ontological states of leaving and arriving from the zone of transition, non-belonging, and suspension, exploring what international cultural practitioners lose and gain in their constant travels. A project by BAK (basis voor actuele kunst) in collaboration with e-flux (electronic flux corporation). With contributions by Francis Alys, Tobias Berger, Mariana Castillo Deball & Daniela Franco, Jeremiah Day, Liam Gillick, Marina Grzinic, Mika Hannula, Hou Hanru, Thomas Hirschhorn, Jens Hoffmann, Karl Holmqvist, Hans Ulrich Obrist & Philippe Parreno, Raqs Media Collective, Martha Rosler, Kuang-Yu Tsui, Haegue Yang, and many others. **EPUISÉ / OUT OF PRINT**

Everything you ever wanted to know about Hans Ulrich Obrist butwere afraid to ask has now been asked, revealing the truth from the beginning of his career as a young curator in his Zurich kitchen to his recent position as co-director of the Serpentine in London. This book is a "production of reality conversations", otherwise known as interviews. It undertakes the impossible: pinning down this peripatetic curator, and affirming the wisdom of an artist who told Obrist "don't go" when he contemplated leaving the art world for other fields. Interviews by Jean Max Colard, Robert Fleck, Jefferson Hack, Nav Haq, Sophia Krzys Acord, Brendan McGetrick, Ingo Niermann, Paul O'Neill,Philippe Parreno & Alex Poots, Juri Steiner, Gavin Wade, et al. Résumé:
It is impossible to overstate the importance of Lincoln Kirstein (1907-1996) to the arts in America. One of the rare talents who touched the entire artistic field of his time – ballet, film, literature, theater, painting, sculpture, photography, architecture – he is perhaps best known for bringing the choreographer George Balanchine to the United States, and for founding with him the supremely influential School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet. Kirstein was also a persuasive and lucid writer who published over 500 books, articles and monographs. Now, in honor of the centennial of Kirstein’s birth, Eakins Press presents the most comprehensive bibliography ever of his huge literary output, annotated, indexed and categorized into Fiction; Poetry; Drama and Ballet Libretti; On Dance; On Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Architecture; On Photography; On Film; On Literature, History, Politics and other Subjects; and Memoir. This impressive work includes selected excerpts and a chronology of a life which, as Hilton Kramer wrote in the New York Times, “has helped to shape some of the most valuable parts of our culture.”

Résumé:
An unprecedented glimpse behind the scenes at the practice of Eero Saarinen, one of the greats of mid-century American architecture. Covers 1957 to 1961, the period when Saarinen was working on iconic projects like Dulles International Airpot Terminal, the former TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport and the St. Louis Arch. Richard Knight, Saarinen's "house photographer", documents in black and white photographs and a personal memoir the excitement of being part of this unparalleled creative team. Timed to coincide with a touring Saarinen retrospective (beginning at the Cranbrook Institute in fall 2007 and traveling to Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Minneapolis, St. Louis, New York, and New Haven), the book includes a foreward on Saarinen's artistic vision and office culture by Cesar Pelli, who began his career in the architect's office, and an afterword by architectural historian Pierluigi Serraino on the significance of large-scale model-making in Saarinen's work.
