Résumé:
Home to 20 million people and still growing, Greater Cairo mirrors the global phenomenon of unplanned urban growth. Approximately 60 percent of the population of Africa’s biggest city lives in so-called informal housing, typically five-to-ten-story concrete-and-brick-infill structures built without permits in the desert or on former agricultural land. 'Housing Cairo: The Informal Response' illuminates the architecture of informality and its mechanisms of production through a series of theoretical essays and architectural design proposals. Central to the project is a re-examination of the concept of “informality” itself and its often negative connotations.

Young people ambitious to change the world and unhinge the rules holding it together, enjoying poking fun at it a little, respectfully but bravely, even daring to bring about 'revolution', but 'without anybody actually noticing', as the master Bruno Munari would have pointed out with a smile. And as our King Midas of communication and design, who would really be at home here with these people, would have said, the healthy rule that now needs to be applied much more often and with greater clarity is that of breaking them (the rules) in order to move beyond them.

Résumé:
When Marianne Brandt wasn’t designing the beautiful, mass-reproducible metal home furnishings--including lamps and teapots still in production today--with which she and her compatriots revolutionized modern interior space, she was cutting and pasting newly abundant magazines and printed material into these witty, politically and artistically savvy photomontages. Their full range is investigated, analyzed and illustrated for the first time in Tempo Tempo! a striking portfolio and critical complement to Brandt’s metalwork. She used the technology of the era’s visual culture to denounce that same technology, to re-imagine the roles of women and to challenge pictorial conventions.
