Résumé:
Air equals information. All organic air users - plants, humans and other animals - contribute to the hybrid space that is the atmosphere through breathing and sending chemical messages. Unlike other organic air users, humans, in addition, saturate air space with electronic data. This book argues in favour of ‘remembering air’ that is expressed in the shift from the ‘leap into the void’ to ‘going aerial’. Going aerial enables us to receive and transmit airborne data of various sources that were previously inaccessible due to a lack of technology and, more importantly, due to lack of awareness and interest in air as carrier, conductor and catalyst of communication processes. Going aerial offers an original account of the most innovative air-using strategies that have been developed by artists and architects in the form of machines, robots, nomadic inflatables, bubbles, ambiances, and atmospheres.

Résumé:
Pneumatic structures have been thoroughly investigated and developed during the 1960s. However, the energy crisis and aesthetic developments stopped the process of employing these structures as a mainstream construction method. Deflateables concentrates on the very limited knowledge of vacuum constructions and develops a range of aesthetic, technical and functional design possibilities. Until today, there has been a very limited number of designs developed and realized using pressurized constructions – despite the fact that this technology could lead to positive aspects: the air pressure of the earth can be used as a stabilizing and form-giving parameter, creating a specific and inspiring shape. In addition, the very nature of this technology offers varying degrees of thermal and acoustic insulation. Exploiting the possibilities of extremely light and, at the same time, energetically active constructions, deflateables are one of the promising fields of architectural and design developments. The chance to create structures that can move and react to requests such as user and climate requirements as well as formative demands, lifts this topic onto the level of a realistic and usable technology for as yet unknown design possibilities. Two volumes of the Imagine series are planned annually. Façades and Deflateables will appear in May 2008. Performance Driven Envelopes and Rapids will appear at the beginning of 2009.

Résumé:
Honeycomb architecture is an innovative architectural system formed by a hexangular tube construction.“Honeycomb tube architecture” published in 2006 introduced honeycomb-tube architecture designed from pre-stressed concrete. This volume introduces honeycomb architecture with a steel construction. Change in construction material results a need for a new method of construction. The “fractal geometry” concept is introduced, and is the focal point of this book. Through analysis of experimentation results and detailed data, this book explores how the dynamic honeycomb architecture may be realized through its innovative construction methods and systems. 6 case studies with pre-determined sites and interviews of Nobuaki Furuya, Toshio Otsuki and Hiroshi Ota are also featured. Please enjoy witnessing a further step of honeycomb architecture becoming a reality.

From the worlds of drawing, graphic design and painting, Pictoplasma examines the latest tendencies in character design. Having closely coincided with the character design movement since 1999, Pictoplasma presents a new, incomparable collection of what has become the world's most popular visual language. Through playful sampling and visual remixing, these characters evade established pictorial norms, and confront the viewer directly and emotionally, regardless of cultural background. Focusing on the graphical roots of contemporary character culture, this volume examines the essential qualities that empower these reduced character depictions with an universal, anthropomorphic appeal.

Résumé:
This book presents objects from the 21st Century by Spanish designers of the 21st century. This publication is motivated by the conviction that the concept of the object, as such, has been left behind. The universe of objects, or perhaps we would have to say of "offjects," put forward here is that of the work of those generation that graduated after the Barcelona Olympics: from 1992 into these first few years of the 21st century. What seems clear is that the classic definition of "design" has been rendered obsolete. In the first place because an object's conceptual and narrative charge largely determines its material and physical configuration, and in second place, because many present-day pieces are not produced industrially - some because their designers chose not to, others because they seem not to fit into excessively conservative industrial set-ups. What does seem to be the case is that we are dealing with a new typology of designer, more open, more multidisciplinary and more remote from the traditional commercial circuit, which is not to say remote from the market.
