Wilkinson perceives the landscape of Singapore for the lush fertile rainforest that it is: a vast Henri Rousseau painting in which he can build. In his houses, the boundaries between inside and outside are blurred, a reciprocal relationship with the landscape is established, and a tropical ideal has been created. The architecture is always expressive and each of Wilkinson’s houses is defined by a set of formal gestures that are both playful and practical: a tactile indulgence is always underpinned by a commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment. Landscaping, planting and the use of water are crucial to these houses, which draw upon the whimsy and decorative detailing of Arts and Crafts architecture, and the spatial freedom of such architects as Schindler and Wright. This monograph feature twenty-one of Wilkinson’s houses, built over the last decade. Each project is illustrated by colour photography, and is documented with formal drawings, concept sketches and project descriptions. An introductory essay examines the architecture in the context of 21st century Singapore, and documents Wilkinson’s background, influences and design philosophy.

Photography Changes Everything offers a provocative rethinking of photography’s impact on our culture and our daily lives. Compiling hundreds of images and responses from leading authorities on photography, it offers a brilliant, reader-friendly exploration of the many ways in which photographs package information and values, demand and hold attention, and shape our knowledge of and experience in the world. The volume draws on the extraordinary visual assets of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, science centers and archives to launch an unprecedented interdisciplinary dialogue on photography’s capacity to shape and change our experience of the world. This publication features over 300 images and nearly 100 engaging short texts commissioned from experts, writers, inventors, public figures and others--from Hugh Hefner to John Baldessari, John Waters, Robert Adams, Sandra Phillips and many others. Each story responds to images selected by project contributors.

From 2008 to 2010, Singapore-based WOHA Architects completed thirteen projects, all of them significant public buildings. This monograph details each of these buildings, and examines the theoretical evolution and practical experience. The personal backgrounds and early projects of Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, who began the partnership in 1994, are documented in order to explain their unflinching commitment to innovation and sustainability. Forming a case study for early 21st century architecture, the recent works of WOHA have presented ingenious solutions to the problems of high-density living and environmental sustainability.

"The photograph of a single building has some similarity to an individual portrait," says Thomas Struth, who has been photographing architecture for nearly four decades, and accordingly, he likens the image of a place or a street to a group portrait. Unconscious Places presents Thomas Struth’s photographs of streets in all parts of the world: narrow lanes in Edinburgh and Naples, satellite towns in Pyongyang, thoroughfares in Lima and Los Angeles, grand boulevards in St. Petersburg, New York, and Beijing. Frequently devoid of people, Struth’s urban landscapes are also a critical depiction of different human habitats.

Résumé:
One of Japan’s leading electronic composers, Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966) manipulates sound in various “raw” states, often using frequencies at the very limits of human hearing. Occupying a unique soundworld between ambient electronica, sinewave noise and glitch beats, Ikeda’s music has expanded into art contexts more extensively than any of his contemporaries. Datamatics is a long-term art project that explores our reception of miniscule audio and visual data. Developed between 2006–2012, it consists of an audiovisual concert, installations, publications, a radio program and a CD. This book documents most of the works from the series, emphasizing three major Datamatics exhibitions presented in Yamaguchi (Japan 2008), Bogota (Columbia 2011) and Gijon (Spain 2012). Alongside graphic material relating to the production processes such as data sources, graphic scores and technical diagrams, the book also includes texts by curators Kazunao Abe, Maria Belen Sez de Ibarra and Benjamin Weil.

Résumé:
Japan's leading electronic composer and sound artist Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966) focuses on the building blocks of sound and aural minutiae, often deploying frequencies at the very edges of human hearing. His albums +/- (1997) and Matrix (2001) spread this soundworld of sine waves and ambient glitchery to a wider audience; since then, he has exhibited and collaborated (notably with Carsten Nicolai) across the world. A homage to Musique Concrète pioneer Pierre Schaeffer's Solfege de l'objet sonore, Dataphonics began as a monthly broadcast on France culture's Atelier de Création Radiophonique, in which Ikeda created a highly physical auditory experience based on the idea of binary-logic data made audible, “to materialize the invisible domain of ‘totally pure digital data.'” This book and CD includes spreads of graphic scores, codes, symbols and the composition itself, recomposed from the ten segments in which it was originally conceived.
