Résumé:
An exhibition centre is a central focus of a city s economic life, and in many cases a unique expression of its image. For this reason, as well as offering adequate space and infrastructure, it must make a strong, clearly recognizable architectural statement. Over the past couple of decades, new technology and globalization have transformed trade fairs: today they are not so much markets as forums for the exchange of information and contacts. This new volume spotlights twenty-two exemplary European buildings that have overcome the resulting architectural challenges.

Opening this book is like peering into a cabinet of curiosities, a glass-encased world of specimens, where all manner of creatures have been meticulously preserved, arranged and classified. Entire drawers of pinned insects, a menagerie of threadbare rodents, sharks as dried husks, speckled assortments of eggs, flattened and brittle plants, lovingly wrapped birds, eerily floating reptiles, tiny skulls in glass jars, and myriad boxes of colourful minerals, shells and fossils, all with delicate, handwritten tags... the immense culmination of decades of scientific inquiry, photographed, categorised and presented in more than 150 full-colour pages.

Résumé:
Architectural collections are warehouses of knowledge: they are resources for historical plans and buildings, and they offer insight and ideas for the designs of tomorrow. However, in the age of computer-aided design, the sketches, plans and models that were once available for research and exhibitions are being replaced by bits and bytes on a variety of storage media whose lifetimes have no guaranteed length. The Architekturmuseum at the Technical University in Munich has one of the largest special collections of architecture in Europe. This publication presents its complex history while placing it in the context of other prominent international collections. Selected examples are used to discuss questions about collecting, research and the exhibition of architecture in the future.

Occupying a large complex of six historic buildings along the Palace Embankment in St. Petersburg, its collections contain over three million items, including one of the largest collections of paintings in the world. Résumé:
This book accompanies an exhibit at gta exhibitions of ETH Zurich that focuses on artworks featuring carefully designed stages—a deliberate blurring of the border between art, architecture, and performance. Creating static, yet theatrical, tableaux in which artists can highlight the interplay between the disciplines of art and architecture, the stages at the same time represent a wide range of creative approaches to art and art making, and they also offer reflections on sources of artistic inspiration, including books and films. A lasting record of a carefully—and creatively—curated exhibition, Theater Objects will surprise and impress architects, artists, and fans of both forms.

Résumé:
From April to October in 1964 and 1965, some 52 million people from around the world flocked to the New York World's Fair, an experience that lives on in the memory of many individuals and in America's collective consciousness. Lawrence R. Samuel offers a thought-provoking portrait of this seminal event and of the cultural climate that surrounded it, countering critics' assessment of the Fair as the "ugly duckling" of global expositions. Although much attention has been paid to the controversial role of Fair president Robert Moses, who tried to use the event to ensure his personal legacy, the Fair itself was for the great majority of visitors an overwhelmingly positive, often inspirational, and sometimes transcendent experience that truly delivered on its theme of "peace through understanding." Much of the Fair's popularity, Samuel suggests, stemmed from its looking backward as much as forward, offering visitors sanctuary from the cultural storm that was rapidly approaching in the mid-1960s. Opening just five months after President Kennedy's assassination, the Fair allowed millions to celebrate international brotherhood while the conflict in Vietnam came to a boil. The Fair glorified the postwar American dream of limitless optimism just as a counterculture of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll was coming into being. It was, in short, the last gasp of the American Dream: The End of the Innocence.
