Résumé:
For this site-specific work at Japan's National Art Museum in Osaka, Christian Philipp Müller tracked down 54 different types of chairs in use at the museum. He then presented them on a colorful, stair-step platform in chronological order by the date of design, and created a typology of usage. The book also includes photos of the chairs in use, product catalogs and storage conditions. A fine commentary on the current fetish of the chair as design object, and our nostalgia for these familiar shapes memorialized as high-class consumer goods. With contribitions by Christian Philipp Müller, Hiroyuki Nakanishi, Christian Witt-Döring and Bennett Simpson.

Résumé:
Le Corbusier's Pavilion for Zurich uses numerous handwritten documents, drawings, and papers to trace the history of Le Corbusier's last built work. This dwelling, which is also a museum, was initiated by Zurich gallery owner Heidi Weber. With its abstract forms and colors, it represents an intellectual legacy of the famous architect in which the further development of architecture as envisaged by Le Corbusier is clearly legible. From the first ideas and sketches from and beyond, the genesis of this exceptional building - the completion of which the architect did not live to see - is presented with illustrations and documents. This book explains the significance of the pavilion, which differs strongly from the beton brut of Le Corbusier's late work, in terms of its position as one of the architect's central and forward-looking works.

Résumé:
The book explores the origins and development of early 20th-century modernism in America through the lens of the major exhibitions that introduced this art to the general public. The author shows how modern artists and curators sought to relate high art to mass culture in order to make it accessible to more people, and successfully popularized modern painting and design during the interwar years.A major contribution to our understanding of the origins of modernism, this book captures the vibrant diversity that the term “modern art” meant at this time. The chapters examine exhibitions held in New York in the 1920s and 1930s, including those organized by Alfred Stieglitz, the Little Review, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art.
