Résumé:
«Modernist photography» re-examines the classic period of 20th-century photography using new critical approaches to consider five recurrent visual themes during the years 1915 to 1945. These themes cut across such stylistic movements as Pictorialism, Surrealism, and the New Vision, and include the transformation of objects, experimental images of the body, visions of the city, the industrialization of the countryside, and experimental directions in poster design and typography. This thematic approach fosters new perspectives on such key photographers as Bernice Abbott, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Raoul Hausmann, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks and Man Ray and emphasizes the interactions between European and American practitioners. The catalogue includes chapters on each of the five themes by ICP Curators Christopher Phillips and Vanessa Rocco. It is based on a selection of 70 works from the Daniel Cowin Collection. The collection of about 1,600 images dates from 1860 to 1960 and includes a range of processes and formats--postcards, stereographs, carte-de-vistes, tintypes, albumen prints, and gelatin silver prints.

Résumé:
Eating and drinking images may seem like an anomalous notion but, since antiquity, in the European and Mediterranean worlds, people have swallowed down frescoes, icons, engravings, eucharistic hosts stamped with images, heraldic wafers, marzipan figures, and other sculpted dishes. Either specifically made for human consumption or diverted from their original purpose so as to be ingested, these figured artifacts have been not only gazed upon but also incorporated—taken into the body—as solids or liquids. How can we explain such behavior? Why take an image into one’s own body, devouring it at the risk of destroying it, consuming rather than contemplating it wisely from a distance? What structures of the imagination underlie and justify these desires for incorporation? What are the visual configurations offered up to the mouth, and what are their effects? What therapeutic, religious, symbolic, and social functions can we attribute to these forms of relations with icons? These are a few of the questions raised in this investigation into iconophagy.

Résumé:
In "Black elegies", Kimberly Juanita Brown examines the form of the elegy and its unique capacity to convey the elongated grief borne of sustained racial violence. Structured around the sensorial, the book moves through sight, sound, and touch to reveal what Okwui Enwezor calls the "national emergency of black grief." With her characteristic literary skill, Brown analyzes the work of major figures including Toni Morrison, Carrie Mae Weems, Audre Lorde, and Marvin Gaye, among others. Brown contemplates recognizable sites of mourning: forced migration and enslavement, bodily violations, imprisonment and death. And she examines sites that do not register immediately as archives of grief: the landscape of southern U.S. slave plantations, a spontaneous street party, a quilt constructed out of the clothing worn by a loved one, a dance performance to hold the memory of history, and an aeolian harp installed at an institute of European art, among others. In this, the book offers a framework of mourning while black, within the parameters of contemporary artistic production.

Résumé:
There are few architects who are as adept as the Dutch architect Jacq. de Brouwer at creating such powerful architecture with such economy of means. His work exemplifies a rare purity. The work of De Brouwer stands outside the main currents in Dutch architecture, in which there is an over-emphasis on the production of seductive superficies. From the Dutch perspective his approach to architecture is remarkably unfashionable, perhaps even old-fashioned, while in a European context there are architects such as Cruz & Ortiz and Peter Zumthor who occupy similar positions. The abstraction of De Brouwers architecture means that his work is both unruly and intriguing. In his work he cuts to the essential core with determination and precision. He banishes all distraction, whether it be the trends and fashions in the profession, or the interference in the environment for which he is designing. This monograph provides a chronological overview of the most important works created by De Brouwer since the mid-1980s.

Résumé:
This is the first comprehensive monograph on Balthasar Burkhard, the Swiss master of the sublime. A visual vocabulary of the world we live in, meditative and haunting, instilling peace and anxiety at the same time. This is a book about the beauty of nature - its force, silence, and eternal existence - and about cities - seen from above as they keep growing, threatening to suffocate us. Swiss photographer Balthasar Burkhard presents work from the last ten years, images from all over the world - from Japan to the USA, from South America to Africa and to the European Alps. The photographs are arranged in chapters that each focus on one aspect of the world - Desert, River, Skies, Cities, Landscapes. Together, they add up to a poetic atlas, a vision of the beauties and horrors of the world today. Intense black-and-white images that can only be created with a photo camera. A masterpiece of landscape and cityscape photography!

Résumé:
The early twentieth century was a time of extraordinary change in Europe. War and revolution shattered the traditional cohesion of European civilisation, while the machine age brought mass production and distribution and a new sense of internationalism. This ‘heroic’ period of modernity found particularly forceful expression in graphic design and photomontage throughout Europe, where new techniques allowed a fusion of typography, painting and photography, evoking the dynamism and fragmentation of cinema. "Avant-garde Graphics: 1918 – 34" showcases the work of many of the leading practitioners of the Modern movement, from Italian Futurists, the Dutch members of De Stijl and the German Bauhaus, to the Constructivists of Russia and central Europe. Drawn from the collection of Merrill C. Berman, one of the greatest collections of twentieth-century graphic art in the world, this book features colour reproductions of original posters, prints, book designs and political and commercial ephemera, together with original designers’ layouts and photomontages.

Résumé:
"New York in photobooks" gathers and studies a selection of images of the capital of the twentieth century, the most photogenic and most photographed city in history. In these images from the books selected (only a fraction of those in existence), the city of skyscrapers is captured from construction thereof in the 1930s to the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, alongside the urban life of the New Yorkers themselves, recorded in a model style of street photography. Many of the books are the work of European and Japanese photographers, who discovered multiple perspectives (human, cultural, social, economic…) from which to view the city that shaped the twentieth century. Nueva York en fotolibros is the catalogue of a traveling exhibition curated by Horacio Fernández, who is also the editor of the book: a collaborative effort in which, in addition to the many images, there are texts by numerous pho-tography scholars.

Résumé:
Coffee, tea, and chocolate were all the rage in Enlightenment Europe. These fashionable beverages profoundly shaped modes of sociability and patterns of consumption, yet none of the plants required for their preparation was native to the continent: coffee was imported from the Levant, tea from Asia, and chocolate from Mesoamerica. Their introduction to 17th-century Europe revolutionized drinking habits and social customs. It also spurred an insatiable demand for specialized vessels such as hot beverage services and tea canisters, coffee cups and chocolate pots. This beautiful book demonstrates how the paraphernalia associated with coffee, tea, and chocolate can eloquently evoke the culture of these new beverages and the material pleasures that surrounded them. Contributors address such topics as the politics of coffee consumption in 18th-century Germany; 18th-century visual satires on the European consumption of tea, coffee, and chocolate; and the design history of coffee pots in the United States between the colonial period and the present.

Résumé:
The city at night is defined by light. A well-lit urban space can be inviting, giving visitors a sense of well-being and security. A successful nighttime lighting design can also give a city its own identity and accentuate certain architectural qualities. At the same time, an overabundance of light sources can result in light pollution and spatial confusion. In Light Zone City author Christa van Santen uses her many years of experience as a practitioner and teacher of lighting design to articulate basic planning rules for the outdoor lighting of buildings, traffic routes, and squares. In preparation for this guide to urban lighting design, she visited ten European cities—including Paris, Brussels, Berlin, London, Budapest, Vienna, and Amsterdam—with different urban conditions. Light Zone City presents different planning and design tasks systematically and uses each to illustrate specific solutions. Van Santen also explains new artificial lighting systems and outdoor lamps through numerous examples.

Résumé:
In this volume, twenty scholars explore the work of two of the twentieth century’s greatest architectural historians: the American Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903–1987) and the Englishman Sir John Summerson (1904–1992). Both men undertook architectural training and became key polemical figures in the establishment of Modernism in the 1930s. After the war, and especially in the 1950s, both turned more exclusively to historical research and writing. While their areas of interest overlapped, their approaches greatly differed. The contributors to the book investigate the work and methodologies of Summerson and Hitchcock, from their interests in the Northern European (as opposed to Italian) Renaissance, through their studies of the nineteenth century as a precursor to their own times, to their involvement in contemporary issues of design and conservation. The book enhances our understanding of the influences that shaped these two important figures and of the place of architecture within the social and cultural environment.
