Le Corbusier is famous for his dictum that "a house is a machine for living in." What he meant by this was that architecture must be at the service of all of us: it must facilitate our daily lives and the relationships between us and it must, above all, provide a comfortable home. To achieve this, each element of the house must be part of a well-oiled machine.This(...)

Le Corbusier is famous for his dictum that "a house is a machine for living in." To achieve this, each element of the house must be part of a well-oiled machine. This introduction to the architecture and ideas of Le Corbusier for children of ten and over – it will fascinate architecture-minded adults too – brings to life the man, the architect, his work and the world in which he lived. The words are his own and with the accompanying photographs and drawings serve to reveal the philosophy behind the architecture.

Résumé:
''Legible-Visible'' explores the relationship between print publications and audio-visual documents, two of the most important media in the social and cultural landscape of our time—and two forms that also define the evolution of contemporary art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Mela Dávila and Maite Muñoz here show how the arrival of inexpensive home video technologies in the 1970s and then of digital media at the turn of the millennium sparked revolutions in the creation and diffusion of both video artworks and artists' publications. Dávila proposes a theoretical and historical framework for works long dismissed by the market because of their serial nature, while Muñoz shows how artists have taken advantage of the permeability between publications and audovisual elements.

Résumé:
This collection of maps explores the unique personalities of 28 cities around the world, shedding light on the strange and marvelous ways in which humans interact with the places they call home. Artist and creative cartographer Adam Dant dissects Manhattan in an anatomical diagram, traces the form of a Picasso nude in the streets of Monaco, and transforms the crisscrossing paths of boats on the Bosporus into the nerves of Istanbul. Dant draws on the history, culture, and geography of each city and on the beguiling aesthetic of antique maps to create gorgeous works of cartographic art. Witty, insightful, and adorned with a gold foil–stamped cover, this book will capture the imaginations of travelers, map enthusiasts, history buffs, and dreamers.

Museums' attempts to classify and present the world in miniature inevitably mean that much of their collections are forgotten and marginalized. New York based artist Mark Dion (b. 1961), renowned for his work exploring taxonomy, archaeology, and ecology, documents his opportunistic encounters with the Museum of Manchesters neglected drawers and overlooked recesses that are home to redundant labels, orphaned mounts, defunct teaching models, botanical freaks, egyptian fakes, and the minutiae that have fallen through the cracks of museum practice. Finally back in print, ''Bureau of the Centre for the Study of Surrealism and Its Legacy'', Dion's project and book are a repository for the detritus of museum life and a work in process, classifying the museums unclassifiable while exploring the bureaucratic workings of the institution.

Résumé:
One glimpse of the cascading steel beams mirrored in the reflecting pond and it's clear that the Hugo and Brigitte Eppich house is a singular achievement, a daring experiment that embodies Erickson's West Coast modernist ideas about site, material, and form. Erickson's first steel residence explores both the structural and aesthetic possibilities of the material, with curved beams, dyed cladding, and milled furnishings designed by Francisco Kripacz- features that would have been near-impossible on a regular commission. But after seeing the first Eppich House, built for Hugo's twin brother Helmut, Hugo entrusted Erickson with creating and furnishing the entire house, inside and out- another first for Erickson- and made available the Eppic brothers' steel fabricating plants, which built virtually every component of the home.

Résumé:
Acoustic Territories: Sound Culture and Everyday Life offers an expansive reading of auditory life. It provides a consideration of the performative dynamics inherent to sound culture and acts of listening, and discusses how auditory studies may illuminate understandings of contemporary society. Combining research on urbanism, popular culture and auditory issues, it opens up multiple perspectives. Brandon LaBelle traces auditory life through a topographic structure: beginning with underground territories, through to the home as a site, and then further, to streets and neighborhoods, and finally to the sky itself. This structure follows sound as it appears in specific auditory designs, as it is mobilized within various cultural projects, and queries how it comes to circulate through everyday life as a medium for social transformation.

Résumé:
The lived experience of cities has long been defined by motion. As urban dwellers travel to work, home, and play they carve random or predictable pathways across neighbourhoods and districts. This book investigates the urban capacity for movement, the city as a space of circulation, by taking into account not only the physical displacement of people but the circulation of cultures, things, and ideas. A series of case studies examine a range of topics, including neighbourhood gentrification, subway busking, yard sales, electronic waste, and language, refining the touchstone principle of circulation for the study of urban culture, both materially and theoretically. Contributors employ a variety of disciplinary approaches to create a richly varied picture of the multiple trajectories and effects of movement in the city.

Résumé:
Over the last 50 years, the America House in Berlin has been the focal point of cultural and political discussions and international controversies. Protected by barbed wire, it was attacked with eggs and Molotov cocktails; Robert Kennedy and Willy Brandt visited; millions of Berliners gained access to information in its library and at screenings of films; Lyonel Feininger and Robert Rauschenberg exhibited their works there. In addition, the building is an architectural gem. Built in 1956-57 by Bruno Grimmek, the delicate, open structure is based on the concept of the "idea of space"-a fluid space that is borne by a transparent exterior membrane. In fall 2014 the building will be the new home of C/O Berlin, the exhibition center for photography and visual media.

Résumé:
When Bulgarian photographer Eugenia Maximova (born 1979) started working on the design for Kitchen Stories from the Balkans, her self-published photobook, she began to think about how to include "some of those incredible plastic tablecloth patterns so beloved in these latitudes." Then came the discovery that the garish tablecloths have been manufactured in her hometown for many years--all the serendipity she needed to forge a new project, Associated Nostalgia. From plastic cats to brightly patterned wallpaper, nothing is too brash or clashes too much to be included in her still lifes. This monograph compiles the highly staged scenes of the kitsch so beloved in Maximova's pocket of Eastern Europe, creating both a splash of a photobook and an authentic glimpse into the Bulgarian home aesthetic.
