Résumé:
This publication is a comprehensive reader analysing the role of modern architecture, city planning and consumption in the construction of the Swedish welfare state. The book draws mainly from the formative phase of the Swedish model, but also on European and American examples, and attempts to highlight the contradictions and complexities of the process of modernisation. The book provides an in-depth, multilayered account of the process of modernisation; whilst also highlighting the difficulties found. The debate is enriched from a diverse range of contributors including architects, researchers and leading academics from across the globe. It includes an introduction from Helena Mattsson and Sven-Olov Wallenstein and contributions from academics from New York’s Columbia University and London’s UCL; alongside architects in the field. The essays explore the construction of the welfare state, contextualising this in relation to the political and social factors of the time, consumers and spectacles — from housing to national marketing programmes. Specific case studies are featured and the reader ends with a section dealing with the more general problem of historiography.

Résumé:
This book presents The Hill - a massive and enigmatic work of art engineered, built, and designed by an equally enigmatic American artist. For more than a quarter of a century, the American artist James Magee has been engaged in a largely secret and solitary endeavour that takes up 52,000 square feet of vast plain in West Texas, USA. A former lawyer, taxi driver, and offshore roughneck, Magee settled in El Paso where he has made a name for himself as a painter, sculptor, poet, and video maker. With 'The Hill', a complex of pavilions joined by ramps and walkways, Magee reveals himself to be an architect, engineer, and builder as well. Luminous photographs of the four buildings in 'The Hill' capture their stark presence in the desert. In addition this book takes readers inside the complex to view enormous installations and sculptures made from natural objects: stone, flowers, wood, iron, and glass. Reminiscent of ruins from the Mayan, Egyptian, and European cultures, 'The Hill' is nonetheless distinctively American.

Résumé:
The city is one of the greatest unsung heroes in cinema -- a modernist inspiration for silent classics such as Metropolis (1926) and a dense urban jungle in The Matrix (1999) -- yet there have been few attempts to grasp the cultural and aesthetic nature of its role in film. This volume is an ambitious collection of writings and photo-essays discussing this complex yet enduring relationship, and how early cinema, digital technology and changing urban geographies have all impacted upon notions and representations of the modern city. Amongst the films discussed are Peeping Tom (1960), Performance (1970), Sans Soleil (1983) and Amores perros (2000). Contributions come from the fields of film studies, cultural theory, architecture and design, as well as filmmakers Patrick Keiller and Chris Petit. Andrew Webber is Reader in Modern German and Comparative Culture at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. He is the author of The European Avant-garde (2004). Emma Wilson is Reader in Contemporary French Literature and Film at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge. She is the author of Cinema's Missing Children (2003) and Alain Resnais (2006).

Résumé:
The history of European landscape design has its beginnings in the early cultures of the Mediterranean. Again and again, especially during the Renaissance, ancient parks and gardens have been imitated as archetypes. The park is still a site of design activity today: human beings use living material to create an artificial landscape, a paradise. This book not only recounts the history of the garden—it conjures it up before the reader’s eyes, from the Garden of Eden and the Hanging Gardens of Nebuchadnezzar to the first book on botany and the gardens of the Renaissance, from the invention of the lawnmower to the land art movement in the United States, Hängende Gärten II (Hanging Gardens II) at the Hanover Expo by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, and the Gazebo-Berg (Gazebo Mountain) of the Swiss artist couple Studer/van den Berg at the 2005 world’s fair in Japan. Every single "station" of this journey through gardens and time is illustrated by an entire double page, with pointedly written texts and an abundance of historical and contemporary images.

Résumé:
Only in the last decade have climatologists developed an accurate picture of yearly climate conditions in historical times. This development confirmed a long-standing suspicion: that the world endured a 500-year cold snap -- The Little Ice Age -- that lasted roughly from A.D. 1300 until 1850. "The little ice age" tells the story of the turbulent, unpredictable and often very cold years of modern European history, how climate altered historical events, and what they mean in the context of today's global warming. With its basis in cutting-edge science, "The little ice age" offers a new perspective on familiar events. Renowned archaeologist Brian Fagan shows how the increasing cold affected Norse exploration; how changing sea temperatures caused English and Basque fishermen to follow vast shoals of cod all the way to the New World; how a generations-long subsistence crisis in France contributed to social disintegration and ultimately revolution; and how English efforts to improve farm productivity in the face of a deteriorating climate helped pave the way for the Industrial Revolution and hence for global warming.

Résumé:
A definitive volume of writings by one of the most renowned art historians of the past century, "Is Art History?" brings together Svetlana Alpers’ contributions to the art historical discipline. Her writing spans over six decades: beginning with seminal essays written in examination of the constraints of the art historical discipline, including a foundational essay on Vasari (1960), "Is Art History?" (1970), "Style Is What You Make It" (1979) and "Art History and Its Exclusions" (1982); two never before published lectures and other unpublished public presentations; notable critical essays on art and recent texts on contemporary artists including Alex Katz, Catherine Murphy and Shirley Jaffe. "Is Art History?" also includes new prefatory notes written by the author for this occasion, an unexpected introduction by her former student, the esteemed scholar-critic Richard Meyer, and an interview with the German author and critic Ulf Erdmann Ziegler. This extensive view of Alpers’ prolific and varied career appeals both to new readers in need of an introduction and to audiences familiar with her essential writing on the great European tradition of painting.

Résumé:
The widely known image of Lucerne is of the city on the Lake of Four Cantons, below Mt Pilatus, framed by snow-covered peaks and gentle hills, equipped with bridges and churches, mansions, grand hotels, lanes in the historical centre, and lakeside walks. This long overdue architectural guide also spotlights the city's notable 20th century architectural tradition, including buildings by renowned European architects such as Jean Nouvel, Diener & Diener and Hans Kollhoff. In six "strolls through space and time" and a "detour" to eight neighbouring localities, the author and expert on 20th century Swiss and Lucerne architecture Otti Gmür systematically describes and documents the major buildings of the 20th century and the present. Descriptions of complexes, historical and new general plans and references to earlier buildings that are part of the complexes or that have been adapted and altered in recent times round off the image of the City of Lucerne and its urban development. The guide is intended to animate and accompany a real or imaginary visit to Lucerne.

Résumé:
This book is the first to present in a single volume a complete guide to one of the most notorious and radical art movements of the 20th century, the Situationist International (SI). Comprising a comprehensive history that includes an examination of the SI's far-reaching ideas about our 'society of the spectacle', this book also provides an insight into the Situationist legacy together with extensive visual material. Tracing its development back to the European avant-garde and groups such as COBRA, Lettrism and the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus, Ford provides a comprehensive historical background to the 1957 foundation of the Situationist International under its self-proclaimed leader, the brilliant Guy Debord. Looking at painting, architecture and cinema, Ford includes detailed profiles of the main members such as the Asger Jorn, Constant, Pinot-Gallizio and Ralph Rumney. With its disintegration in 1972 the final chapter looks at how the SI's legacy can be traced within subsequent artistic and activist movements, from punk through to culture jamming and media activism.

The Montreal International Conference : forty-odd North American and European specialists share their experiences and make suggestions regarding the future and ownership of these noble buildings, as well as their purpose and use. They also describe the challenges of urban planning and managing such buildings, and explore new approaches that will help churches survive by redefining their purpose and status within the community. In the end, the issue is one of understanding how churches can again become the heritage of the entire community.
