Résumé:
Culled and assembled by Romeyn Beck Hough between 1888 and 1913 in what still remains and stunning and unparalleled achievement, "The American Woods" —originally published in 14 volumes, with actual specimens mounted on card stock—is a work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for study of trees and wood. "The wood book" reproduces, in painstaking facsimile, all of the specimen pages from the original volumes. For each tree, three different cross-section cuts of wood are represented (radial, horizontal, and vertical), demonstrating the particular characteristics of the grain and the wealth of colors and textures to be found among the many different wood types. Also included in this special edition are lithographs by Charles Sprague Sargent of the leaves and nuts of most trees, as well as texts describing the trees’ geographical origins and physical characteristics.

This volume documents MVRDV`s project for the competition for the Musee des Arts et Civilisations in Paris, and includes all aspects of the design: visual as well as written. This book asks such urgent design questions as the meaning of a museum for non-Western art at a time when worldwide mobility is making the ideas of "Western" and "non-Western" meaningless. How does one represent authenticity in this context? Designed by MVRDV, this book allows the reader inside the design process to the original ideas conceived and problems faced by an architect.

Résumé:
What would it mean today to think or to imagine, to design or to construct, in relation not to things made" but to "things in the making"? This question, first posed by the philosopher William James, was the point of departure for "The Pragmatist Imagination." The volume brings together position statements, theoretical speculations, and critical commentary by 33 leading thinkers and makers from over a dozen disciplines. Based on the proceedings of an international workshop held at Columbia University under the auspices of the Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture in spring 2000, a preamble to the much-ballyhooed conference at the Museum of Modern Art in November, 2000, the contributions traverse a set of burning questions about the future, ranging from the relationship between art and experience to the impact of new technologies on human consciousness, from transformations in everyday life to problems of public space, and from the destiny of the nation-state toemergent forms of transnationalism.

Résumé:
Using language - speaking and understanding it - is a defining ability of human beings, woven into all human activity. It is therefore inevitable that it should be deeply implicated in the design, production, and use of buildings. Building legislation, design guides, competition and other briefs, architectural criticism, teaching and scholarly material, and the media all produce their characteristic texts. The authors use texts about such projects as Berlin's new Reichstag, Scotland's new Parliament, and the Auschwitz concentration camp museum to clarify the interaction between texts, design, critical debate, and response.

Résumé:
The author concentrates on fundamental texts in the study of architectural history with special reference to eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain. The texts under discussion address key themes or methods in the construction of architectural histories. Alongside this, philosophical or theoretical writings that address the abstract issues surrounding the main texts are presented as a kind of exegesis on the chosen texts. This, together with an introduction and discursive essays which preface each of the sections, present a trans-disciplinary discourse around the discipline of architectural history.

Résumé:
Richards shows that attractive and practical alternatives to a car dependent society are possible. With the growth of car ownership and use reaching crisis proportions in our cities it is imperative to find and implement alternatives if cities are to survive and prosper. He reveals how transport technology is developing, in particular, showing how it can be integrated into the urban environment. The book opens with a look at the "best" of current transportation systems and goes on to explore such advanced technologies as automated highways, covered cities, monorails, new elevated systems, smart cars, guided buses, as well as intelligent highways, and car-free housing. The importance, too, of simple measures such as walking and cycling are covered as being an essential part of any future city as well as that of an "integrated transport" if people are to be encouraged to get out of their cars.

Résumé:
In this third, revised edition of his eidely acclaimed book, Dr. Geoffrey Baker explains the complexities of Le Corbusier's oeuvre using a three-dimensional diagrammatic analysis to identify major themes and influences. The narrative and fine illustration, enhanced by the inclusion of color plates, cover the key buildings from the four developmental stages of his work, making it an excellent guide for architect and student alike. Inclusion of the Pavillion Suisse in this volume reminds us of the transitional nature of this building in which the use of natural material, stone, and curved forms reveals fresh lyricism in Le Corbusier's oeuvre. Inclsuion of the Villa Shodhan in India concludes the cubic domestic progression that begins with the Maison Citrohan, developing through such key examples as the La Roche Jeanneret houses, the Villa Stein-de-Monzie, Villa Savoye, and Villa at Carthage.

Résumé:
"Why Architecture Matters" collects the best of Kamin's columns, incuding his acclaimed series advocating the intelligent development of Chicago's lakefront. The columns are organized thematically, providing an accessible and thought-provoking view of architecture in the 1990s, from soaring skyscrapers to vibrant immigrant neighborhoods, troubled public housing projects, and sprawling suburbs. Because Chicago serves as a barometer of national design trends, these writings shed new light on American architecture and urbanism during a decade that Kamin labels "The Nervous Nineties"--a period of unparalleled affluence and underlying anxiety, of soothing retro buildings and provocative new ones that express the frenzied state of modern life.
