Overlapped by cultural consumption and politics, planetary imagination stimulates a useful framework for interrogating the human impact on environmental limitations over a technological foreground. The blurry lines between the engineered logic and cultural imagination are continually embedded and influenced by intuition in the cultural practices of capital enclosure. Theories, design practices, and the forms of imagination, including science fiction, open up critical questions on the status of our environment here on Earth. This book comprises a series of conversations to gather experts from a range of disciplines at the intersection of architecture and the environment. It continues the conversation with a collection of essays as both reflections from the provocative discussions and expanding the discourse of enclosed environments in architecture and design fields.

Résumé:
Trees have been deliberately connected with houses since they were introduced as a prominent part of architectural design. The relationships of contiguity between houses and trees have existed since ancient times. However, at the end of the 19th century those links became explicit in the design process, as the house emerged as one of the fundamental architectural programs, and as the result of an increasing sensibility towards environmental aspects and the landscape. The first part of this publication is to present a collection of exemplary five houses that evinced explicit relationships with pre-existing trees. The five twentieth century projects are: La Casa (B. Rudofsky, 1969), Cottage Caesar (M. Breuer, 1951), Ville La Roche (Le Corbusier & P. Jeanneret, 1923), Villa Pepa (J. Navarro Baldeweg, 1994) and Hexenhaus (A. & P. Smithson, 1984-2002). The second part of the book contributes three theoretical concerns for the contemporary project, those ones which are established in the process, with respect to time, place and outdoor domesticity in modern western housing.

Résumé:
This book is an optimistic manifesto that rescripts the anthropocentric narratives of Western architecture with new myths for a playfully compassionate and co-habitable future. The volume reconceptualises buildings as our friends by amplifying architecture's creaturely qualities-formal embellishments, fictional enhancements, and organisational strategies that suggest animal-like agency. In an unsettled world, these qualities initiate more companionable relationships between humans and the built environment, and ultimately foster greater solidarity with other human and nonhuman lifeforms.

Four years after its initial release, Alice Rawsthorn’s bestselling book is republished in an expanded edition, updated in response to recent social, political, and ecological challenges worldwide. Fully revised by the author, the book is enriched by a new chapter on design’s response to the climate emergency, while also exploring the impact of COVID-19, rising inequality, and new developments in identity politics on design. The publication describes the resourcefulness and ingenuity with which designers are responding to complex and intersectional global challenges at an extraordinarily turbulent time. It offers a comprehensive survey of design today, with an appendix comprising more than 50 biographies of relevant living designers and role models for contemporary design.
