The contemporary context is defined by a unique conjuncture. On one hand, we witness the revival of the radical architecture that from the avant-garde experiments of the origins recovers creative processes and iconographic fragments while nullifying the original ideological and political values. On the other hand, we see social protests in defense of fundamental rights of democracy, as in 1968. Architecture is now reinvestigating those ephemeral experiments that have endured half a century as new "stone monuments" capable of indicating new perspectives for both research and design. Placing UFO group at the core of the contemporary debate means investigating their formal and seductive aspects, but also the ideological, political and social values with which objects, installations and happenings have been innervated, transforming them into devices of an architecture nourished by literature, art and political commitment for the foundation of an eloquent and activist project even more radical than the well-known Superstudio and Archizoom. The collaboration between Beatrice Lampariello and False Mirror Office lead to a monograph focused on the UFO’s work and an evaluation of their legacy relative to contemporary architecture.

Over the past decade, a growing number of artists, theorists, curators, and researchers have moved from ''institutional critique'' to ''infrastructural critique,'' or toward ''infrastructural speculation,'' in which they explore the potential of creative infrastructure-related visions and scenarios. This illustrated collection of essays brings together some of art historian Linda Nochlin’s most important writings on modernism and modernity from across her six-decade career. Before the publication of her seminal essay on feminism in art, “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?,” she had already firmly established herself as a major practitioner of a politically sophisticated and class-conscious social art history. Nochlin was part of an important cohort of scholars writing on modernity, determined to rethink the narratives of the subject under the pressure of contemporary events such as student uprisings, the women’s liberation movement, and the Vietnam War, with the help of politically engaged literary criticism that was emerging at the same time. Nochlin embraced Charles Baudelaire’s conviction that modernity is meant to be of one’s time- and that the role of an art historian was to understand the art of the past not only in its own historical context but according to the urgencies of the contemporary world. Before the publication of her seminal essay on feminism in art, “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?,” she had already firmly established herself as a major practitioner of a politically sophisticated and class-conscious social art history. Nochlin was part of an important cohort of scholars writing on modernity, determined to rethink the narratives of the subject under the pressure of contemporary events such as student uprisings, the women’s liberation movement, and the Vietnam War, with the help of politically engaged literary criticism that was emerging at the same time. Nochlin embraced Charles Baudelaire’s conviction that modernity is meant to be of one’s time- and that the role of an art historian was to understand the art of the past not only in its own historical context but according to the urgencies of the contemporary world. From academic debates about the nude in the eighteenth century to the work of Robert Gober in the twenty-first, whatever she turned her analytic eye to was conceived as the art of the now. Including seven previously unpublished pieces, this collection highlights the breadth and diversity of Nochlin’s output across the decades, including discussions on colonialism, fashion, and sex.
