Résumé:
Even before being printed in a book to narrate true life (as much as it may seem brutal or idillyc), or to recall the features of a face, since its early years photography has been “exhibited” to audiences. An history of photography narrated through exhibitions and the theory that has accompanied it has never been carried out yet. It would be very interesting, furthermore, to trace back the different aesthetic schools and communication theories that have pointed out the evolution of the history of photography and its public moments par excellence: exhibitions. Installations manifest values, ideologies, politics and aesthetics. An history of photography exhibitions would represent a different and original way of studying photography as a means of expression and contemporary communication. Nowadays photography plays its role on the art and collection market with an unexpected strength and vigour. The discovery and success of a new talent on the market depends on the common work of private galleries, public spaces and the international limelight. The activity of American and European Photography Museums, the numerous great art events and festivals – especially dedicated to the world and market of photography, art galleries that discover new talents and new ways of exhibiting them, all this contributes to a system that works perfectly well presenting new ways of expression for photography, actually widely recognized as heritage of humanity.

Résumé:
The British-born artist and writer Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) is one of the vanguards in the history of women artists and the history of Surrealism. The interests of this visionary—feminism, ecology, the arcane and the mystical, the interconnectedness of everything—are now shared by many. Challenging the conventions of her time, Carrington abandoned family, society, and England to embrace new experiences and forge a unique artistic style in Europe and the Americas. In this evocative illustrated biography, writer and journalist Joanna Moorhead traces her cousin’s footsteps, exploring the artist’s life, loves, friendships, and work. Leading readers on a personal journey across Britain, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United States, and Mexico, ''Surreal spaces'' describes the places and experiences that would become etched in Carrington’s memory and be echoed, sometimes decades later, in her art and writing—whether her grandmother’s kitchen with its giant stove; a remote Cornish hideaway where she holidayed with Max Ernst, Lee Miller, and Man Ray; the Left Bank of Paris; an asylum in Santander, Spain; New York, where she lived among other European exiles; or Mexico City, her final sanctuary. 'Houses are really bodies,' Carrington wrote in her novella ''The Hearing Trumpet''. 'We connect ourselves with walls, roofs and objects just as we hang on to our livers, skeletons, flesh and blood streams.'

Résumé:
This first comprehensive architectural guide on Dessau-Roßlau and Wörlitz, compiled by the Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau and the Kulturstiftung DessauWörlitz, presents an expert overview of more than 120 buildings and rural expanses with great care and attention given to detail. A multifaceted overall picture arises of a region which not only draws on its rich cultural and historic heritage, but also plans for the future and ventures out into new terrain. In the shape of the Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz and the Bauhaus ensemble, the city of Dessau-Roßlau and its environs encompass two UNESCO World Heritage sites. These encompass architectural subjects and expanses, both urban and rural, which invite much attention beyond the region itself and have had a lasting impact on the international stage. Beyond this, however, there are a whole host of notable historic and contemporary buildings in Dessau and its surroundings. As the residence of the princes and dukes of Anhalt in the age of Enlightenment and a centre of intellectual and cultural expansion at European level, the city developed into a significant industrial location as of the second half of the nineteenth century. Today, Dessau’s architectural profile is marked by contrasts: alongside restored historic buildings and standard socialist dwellings, there are also experimental refurbishment projects and ambitious new developments to be found.

Résumé:
Issue 101 of Texte zur Kunst takes “Polarities” as its theme—a term that in the first degree we associate with what’s unfolding around us right now: ideological polarization, from Pegida to Donald Trump. In turn, this issue looks to the macro conditions in which art critical and art historical discourses are currently being formed, and within which they will need to position themselves. What’s particularly striking, we argue, is that this trend toward polarization is happening despite the popular tendency, in recent decades, to speak of increased unification. How, then, can such polarization be reconciled with the dominant, and inherently continuous, neoliberal system—one characterized by the global economy’s promise of inclusiveness; utopian visions of peace (if not survival) via the “singularity” of screen, mind, and body; and a European Union as project of post-Soviet unification, striving to push all conflict to its periphery? What do we make of this growing difference between the ideals of technological/smooth space (where the art world often resides, swiftly neutralizing any resistance as “content”) and the broadening expanses of material unrest? Could the image of polarization be something not to avoid but to engage, at least as a potentially generative model, for understanding true opposition within a continuous system—for times that are anything but free from ideological division?

Résumé:
"Impossible histories" is the first critical survey of the extraordinary experiments in the arts that took place in the former Yugoslavia from the country's founding in 1918 to its breakup in 1991. The combination of Austro-Hungarian, French, German, Italian, and Turkish influences gave Yugoslavia's avant-gardes a distinct character unlike those of other Eastern and Central European avant-gardes. Censorship and suppression kept much of the work far from the eyes and ears of the Yugoslav people, while language barriers and the inaccessibility of archives caused it to remain largely unknown to Western scholars. Even at this late stage in the scholarly investigation of the avant-garde, few Westerners have heard of the movements Belgrade surrealism, signalism, Yugo-Dada, and zenitism; the groups Alfa, Exat 51, Gorgona, OHO, and Scipion Nasice Sisters Theater; or the magazines Danas, Red Pilot, Tank, Vecnost, and Zvrk. The pieces in this collection offer comparative and interpretive accounts of the avant-gardes in the former Yugoslavian countries of Croatia, Serbia, and Slovenia. The book is divided into four sections : art and politics; literature; visual art and architecture; and art in motion (covering theater, dance, music, film, and video). All of the contributors live in the region and many of them participated in the movements discussed. The book also reprints a selection of the most important manifestos generated by all phases of Yugoslav avant-garde activity.

Résumé:
The Rise and Fall of Artist's Soho documents how a little-known industrial neighborhood in New York unintentionally became-for a brief period-a lexus of creative activity. Part personal memoir, part cultural history, the book examines how a group of urban pioneers were able to transform a neighborhood, while also creating new and classic works of American art, music, dance, and theater. Taking advantage of loft occupancy laws that allowed artists to live in buildings not available to the general public, a band of enterprising and creative people began settling in New York's SoHo (so called because it lies South of Houston Street), renovating previously industrial spaces for personal living and work space. Fueled by word-of-mouth-and unsupported either by local or national governments or wealthy individuals-the area grew to be a center for artistic creation. This book not only discusses how the artists came and why, it also focuses on some of the most creative, describing both their lives and work. Such an ideal situation-totally unplanned-could not last forever; the author shows how market forces squeezed out this art utopia, to be replaced by a shadow of itself, "SoMall," with the coming of trendy chain stores, boutiques, and restaurants. European tourists crowd the streets, but the real SoHo is long gone, never to be recreated in quite the same way again.

Résumé:
"Filth" is concerned with what waste reveals about the culture that creates it. From floating barges of urban refuse to dung-encrusted works of art, from toxic landfills to dirty movies, filth has become a major presence and a point of volatile contention in modern life. This book explores the question of what filth has to do with culture: what critical role the lost, the rejected, the abject, and the dirty play in social management and identity formation. It suggests the ongoing power of culturally mandated categories of exclusion and repression. Focusing on filth in literary and cultural materials from London, Paris, and their colonial outposts in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the essays in "Filth" - all but one previously unpublished - range over topics as diverse as the building of sewers in nineteenth-century European metropolises, the link between interior design and bourgeois sanitary phobias, the fictional representation of labouring women and foreigners as polluting, and relations among disease, disorder, and sexual-racial disharmony. "Filth" provides the first sustained consideration, both theoretical and historical, of a subject whose power to horrify, fascinate, and repel is as old as civilization itself. Contributors: David S. Barnes, Neil Blackadder, Joseph Bristow, Joseph W. Childers, Eileen Cleere, Natalka Freeland, Pamela K. Gilbert, Christopher Hamlin, William Kupinse, Benjamin Lazier, David L. Pike, David Trotter.

Résumé:
Digital tools have launched architecture into a dizzying new era, one in which wood, stone, metal, glass, and other traditional materials are augmented by pixels and code. In this ambitious exploration, an eminent thinker examines what, exactly, the building blocks of architecture have meant over the centuries and how technology may-or may not-be changing how we think about them. Antoine Picon argues that materiality is not only about matter and that the silence and inscrutability-the otherness-of raw materials work against humanity's need to live in a meaningful world. He describes how people define who they are, in part, through their specific physical experience of architectural materials and spaces. Indeed, Picon asserts, the entire paradox of the architectural discipline consists in its desire to render matter expressive to human beings. Through a retrospective review of canonical moments in Western European architecture, Picon offers an original perspective on the ways materiality has varied throughout centuries, demonstrating how experiences of the physical world have changed in relation to the evolution of human subjectivity. Ultimately, Picon concludes that computer-based design methods are not an abrupt departure from previous architectural traditions but rather a new way for architects to control material resources. The result reinforces the fundamentally humanistic nature of architectural endeavor with an increasing sense of design freedom and a release from material constraint in the digital era.

Résumé:
Members of Eli Baxter’s generation are the last of the hunting and gathering societies living on Turtle Island. They are also among the last fluent speakers of the Anishinaabay language known as Anishinaabaymowin. 'Aki-wayn-zih' is a story about the land and its spiritual relationship with the Anishinaabayg, from the beginning of their life on Miss-koh-tay-sih Minis (Turtle Island) to the present day. Baxter writes about Anishinaabay life before European contact, his childhood memories of trapping, hunting, and fishing with his family on traditional lands in Treaty 9 territory, and his personal experience surviving the residential school system. Examining how Anishinaabay Kih-kayn-daa-soh-win (knowledge) is an elemental concept embedded in the Anishinaabay language, 'Aki-wayn-zih' explores history, science, math, education, philosophy, law, and spiritual teachings, outlining the cultural significance of language to Anishinaabay identity. Recounting traditional Ojibway legends in their original language, fables in which moral virtues double as survival techniques, and detailed guidelines for expertly trapping or ensnaring animals, Baxter reveals how the residential school system shaped him as an individual, transformed his family, and forever disrupted his reserve community and those like it. Through spiritual teachings, historical accounts, and autobiographical anecdotes, 'Aki-wayn-zih' offers a new form of storytelling from the Anishinaabay point of view.
