Ballpoint drawing has evolved into a thriving art form since the pen emerged as a writing tool in the 1940s, when the Hungarian journalist and inventor Laszlo Biro fled war-torn Europe and began manufacturing the pens in Argentina. Throughout the 1950s and '60s, as the ballpoint became cheaper and more accessible, Alberto Giacometti, Jean Dubuffet, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Nam June Paik, Louise Bourgeois, and many others, sketched with the pens. Today, those who make art with ballpoint pen are no longer confined by size or style. They draw on sculpture, wallpaper, canvas, architecture, and 50-foot sheets of paper, depicting a wide range of subjects - from psychologically charged portraits to mutant animals to abstract scribbles. This book features 30 artists from around the world who are currently creating masterpieces with ballpoint, and discusses their methods, the messages in their work, and their personal connections to the pen.

What makes us human? We are all connected, but do we feel lonely? Does democracy still work? Are cities for everyone? Should the planet be a design project? If Mars is the answer, what is the question? Who wants to live forever? The world of tomorrow is shaped by emerging design and the technology of today. Bringing together a range of objects either newly released or in development, "The Future Starts Here" begins to imagine where our society might be headed. Cute but intelligent robots, massive unmanned aircraft that deliver internet access, crowdfunded buildings, tools printed in space, mysterious black boxes that understand human genetic codes--how can these objects affect the way we live, learn, and love? And how are they challenging our understanding of what it means to be an individual, a citizen, a crowd, or a species?

Résumé:
This book explores the photographic works of Paul Nash (1889–1946), one of the most significant British artists of the 20th century. Best known for his evocative paintings of war-ravaged landscapes and his quasi-Surrealist visions of the English countryside, Nash was also a consummate photographer, who believed that the camera could reveal aspects of the world that the painter could not. Beginning in 1930, he regularly experimented with photography, working with a No. 1A pocket Kodak series 2 camera. Including a highly informative contextual essay by Simon Grant, this publication explores the experimental nature of Nash’s output and the intensity and power of his photographic vision.
