Résumé:
In 2006, Amsterdam's 66 East: Centre for Urban Culture organized a project in which artists and architects--including Theo Baart, Bas Princen, Ralph Kämena, Jannes Linders, Jeroen Musch and Hans Werlemann--examined Amsterdam's predominately Arabic and Turkish neighborhood, Indische Buurt, which had recently become home to studios and offices for the creative sector, often seen as the first step in gentrification. Adopting strategies ranging from critical commentary to activist intervention, the project and subsequent exhibition, Houses of Transformation, posits creative alternatives for urban planners, developers and administrators in responding to the inevitable and ongoing problems of urban renewal. This volume documents these strategies and proposals, while also casting a critical eye on similar neighborhoods in other European cities--including Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Brussels and London--putting the unique issues of Dutch gentrification into a larger perspective

Résumé:
"Extra-ordinary" is edited by Périphériques/IN-EX project, the group of young architects based in Paris who also edited the successful publication "36 Propositions for a Home". The theme which runs through all of the chapters is that of the unusual, the extraordinary found in ordinary architecture. The first chapter consists of a photo documentary by the Parisian art photographer Cécile on so-called "normal" interiors in everyday use. This is followed by a sensational documentation on anonymous architecture in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. Anonymous in this context refers to building without an architect, and the topics examined include Do-it-Yourself, the many aspects of the banal and building outside the city. The third chapter presents a selection of mostly unpublished buildings and projects from younger architects who all received an ordinary commission but who all produced extraordinary results.

Résumé:
"John Soane and the Wooden Bridges of Switzerland" provides an insight into the technology, construction and design of timber bridges in the 18th century. Among the sketches and models is a series of three wooden models attributed to the Swiss architects Hans Ulrich and Johannes Grubenmann. Bridge-building had always fascinated Soane. As a student, he had even won a gold medal for his design of a wooden bridge. During his long professional career, Soane often planned bridges and was consulted about their construction. On his way home from the "grand tour" of Italy, he took a detour through Switzerland to see some bridges built by the Grubenmann brothers. The bridges at Wettingen, Reichenau and Schaffhausen left a lasting impression on the young architect. Years later, in his lectures to the Royal Academy, he would praise their "sublime simplicity".

Résumé:
''MigraTouriSpace'' is an artistic examination of travelling as an approach to the phenomena of migration and tourism, and of the many ways in which they overlap. Understanding that when people travel they also take with them spaces and images means that tourism no longer inevitably refers to the vacation as an exceptional state. Brought back home, the tourist’s gaze has long operated to shape everyday life. For three years, artist Stefanie Bürkle and her interdisciplinary team travelled between Berlin and South Korea, photographing and filming. The result of this research is an atlas of images, with places such as the Vietnamese wholesale market Dong Xuan Center in Berlin Lichtenberg and the German Village, Dogil Maeul, in South Korea, that demonstrates the tension between a migration of culturally coded spatial contexts and post-touristic practices. With a preface by Martina Löw.

Résumé:
In this publication, Sarah Jane Cervenak engages with Black artists and writers who create alternative spaces for Black people to gather free from interruption or regulation. Drawing together Black feminist theory, critical theories of ecology and ecoaesthetics, and Black aesthetics, Cervenak shows how novelists, poets, and visual artists such as Gayl Jones, Toni Morrison, Clementine Hunter, Samiya Bashir, and Leonardo Drew advance an ecological imagination that unsettles Western philosophical ideas of the earth as given to humans. In their aestheticization and conceptualization of gathering, these artists investigate the relationships among art, the environment, home, and forms of Black togetherness. Cervenak argues that by offering a formal and conceptual praxis of gathering, Black artists imagine liberation and alternative ways of being in the world that exist beyond those Enlightenment philosophies that presume Black people and earth as given to enclosure and ownership.

Résumé:
November 2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the Grand Boulevard and Concourse, the Bronx’s crown jewel of urban planning, which stretches over four miles from 138th Street to the Mosholu Parkway. This famous roadway represents Art Deco and Art Moderne architecture at its grandest, including a cornucopia of apartment complexes, the Concourse Plaza Hotel, the Loews Paradise Theater, the Bronx County Courthouse, and, of course, Yankee Stadium. Modeled on the Champs Élysées in Paris and described in the 1939 WPA Guide to New York as “the Park Avenue of the middle-class,” it offered residents amenities not seen before in the city, such as private bathrooms and central heating. This publication examines the rich history of the Bronx’s most famous thoroughfare through a collection of pieces — written by historians and contemporary museum curators, and accompanied by two original texts by Alsatian-born engineer Louis Risse, who designed and oversaw the construction of the Grand Concourse — on the context that informed its planning and construction, along with a vast collection of photographs that bring this period back to life. The book also features six art projects especially commissioned for the occasion : a series of large-scale color photographs by Jeff Liao; a time line by Skowmon Hastanan; The Tree Museum, a project by Katie Holten on the green spaces along the Concourse; a documentary film by Pablo Helguera on three buildings along the Concourse, namely, Poe’s cottage, the Paradise Theater, and the Freedman Home; a project by Kabir Carter about capturing sounds from different areas along the Concourse; and a special lobby installation by Acconci Studio. Traveling the Concourse today offers a lesson in architecture, history, and sociology as you see the faces and places that call it home. It is truly New York, but more important, authentically the Bronx. You can’t experience the Bronx until you travel the Grand Boulevard and Concourse. Foreword by Daniel Libeskind.
