Résumé:
This publication examines the role of national narratives in defining the Arab territory through the strategic implementation of architecture and urban planning. The Arab region, home to 423,000,000 inhabitants, is almost twice the size of the United States but still lacks sufficient and accessible research. "Architecture of the territory" uncovers the mechanisms that have shaped this distinct territory, providing a critically overdue examination of the dichotomy between the overplanned cities of autocratic governments and the post-conflict urban sprawls of precarious states in the Arab world, where national narratives have acted as a vehicle to implement the development of these territories. The book opens a dialogue between young Arab researchers and professionals covering, among other subjects, tensions inherited from colonial borders; agricultural strategies; and imported housing typologies and narratives. The content draws a parallel to similar issues found in the global architectural discourse of today.

Résumé:
Dutch photographer Hans Eijkelboom is fascinated by the clash between the idealistic constructions and aspirations of modernism and the harsh fact of his own living environment. In 2008 the Art Foundation of Amsterdam's Academic Medical Center commissioned the artist to document the Bijlmer, a district in southeast Amsterdam, which both he and the AMC call home. Eijkelboom took 12 photos every month over a period of one and a half years and displayed the steadily expanding series on a temporary wall at the AMC hospital. His photos capture the diversity of the area, telling the story of the place and the varied people who live there. This special album of photographs from the series is accompanied by an essay by art critic Hans den Hartog Jager. The publication also includes a textual collage by the photographer himself, which traces the turbulent genesis and development of the Bijlmer since the 1970s.

Résumé:
10x10 is an account of 10 years of Emiliano Ponzi’s work, spent designing ideas whilst comfortably seated in a 10x10 sq m room in Milan - the illustrator’s home and office. Four walls, a white screen and a window, the only means of escape through which the artist’s images, like carrier pigeons, fly away to editors and art directors. Some of these modern visual metaphors are lost in space, while others return to the window-sill, bringing welcome and, sometimes, unwelcome replies. With an introduction by Nicholas Blechman (art director of the New York Times Book Review), this publication brings us a collection of these images with four different cover choices and a selection of e-mails, sent as Emiliano Ponzi received them. Some amusing, some scathing, but all anonymous. Vividly illustrated for the international press and advertising companies, Ponzi’s sharp accounts record the joys and sorrows of his captivating profession.

Résumé:
Nova Cantabrigiensis is a utopian island in the middle of the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia. It is the invention of visionary outsider artist John Devlin, and was designed to recreate the atmosphere and architecture of Cambridge, England, which John considers to be the perfect city. John came to study in Cambridge in 1979, and fell in love with its unique ambience. When mental illness forced him to return home to Canada after just one year, he became obsessed with discovering the secret to 'the Cambridge essence'. Over ten years, John created over 360 beautiful and unique illustrations, dream-like sketches of re-imagined and reconfigured Cambridge buildings, drawn again and again in the pursuit of perfection. The book Nova Cantabrigiensis presents a selection of John's illustrations, as well as an essay describing his plans for the island and his mathematical theories about architecture. It is published by Island Editions.

Résumé:
From the rule of "an eye for an eye" in the Code of Hammurabi and the Old Testament to the rise of the reforming "penitentiary" in the nineteenth century, from Kant's notion of the right of retaliation to historical-philosophical explorations by Michel Foucault and John Rawls, the question of punishment has long been central to religious, political and philosophical discourse. Cabinet issue 46, with a special section on Punishment, features Gregory Whitehead on the legacy of Philip Zimbardo's controversial "prison experiments" at Stanford University; Justin E.H. Smith on punishment and sacrifice; Johan Lindqvist on music and torture; and a multi-generational conversation about corporal punishment in the home. Elsewhere in the issue: an interview with Robert N. Proctor on how diamonds were made into the most precious of gems; George Prochnik on the history of tattoos; and Marius Kwint on the Cornell Brain Club.

Résumé:
Preservation is ordinarily reserved for architecture that is unique. So how would we go about preserving buildings that are utterly generic? Such is the case with Belyayevo, an ordinary residential district in Moscow. Belyayevo is a typical microrayon – the standardised neighbourhood system that successive Soviet regimes laid out across the USSR in what was the most expansive programme of industrialised construction the world has ever seen. Belyayevo’s buildings, and the desolate spaces between them, are identical to thousands of others, but is it different? Kuba Snopek argues that it is. Home to many of the artists of the Moscow Conceptualism school, the place was written into the character of their art. Snopek argues that this intangible heritage is the key to saving a neighbourhood many feel has had its day. But as Russia comes to terms with ist Soviet legacy, will such arguments fall on deaf ears?

Photographic monograph by Cristian Ordóñez. The pictures of this book were taken between years 2009 and 2017. Eight years in which the artist investigates the connection to place in a close relationship and immersion to the land. People, places and traces discovered in various locations of Chile (where the artist is originally from), Canada (his new home) and the United States. Cristian explores his surroundings and boundaries to find details that provide memories to a place that still feels new to him. He often put myself in situations where he wanders alone through unknown places, without any specific plan in mind - exploring, improvising and letting himself drift and flow to record elements that drive his attention, discovering cultures and local information that manifests along the way as evidence, providing a representation of the area and somehow activating memories of other places he has lived in.

Résumé:
Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein. Few can be said to have had as broad an impact on European art in the twentieth century as these two cultural giants. Pablo Picasso, a pioneering visual artist, created a prolific and widely influential body of work. Gertrude Stein, an intellectual tastemaker, hosted the leading salon for artists and writers between the wars in her Paris apartment, welcoming Henri Matisse, Ernest Hemingway, and Ezra Pound to weekly events at her home to discuss art and literature. It comes as no surprise, then, that Picasso and Stein were fast friends and frequent confidantes. Through Picasso and Stein’s casual notes and reflective letters, this volume of correspondence between the two captures Paris both in the golden age of the early twentieth century and in one of its darkest hours, the Nazi occupation through mentions of dinner parties, lovers, work, and the crises of the two world wars.
