Résumé:
Say the word "work," and most people think of some form of gainful employment. Yet this limited definition has never corresponded to the historical experience of most people—whether in colonies, developing countries, or the industrialized world. That gap between common assumptions and reality grows even more pronounced in the case of women and other groups excluded from the labour market. In this important intervention, Andrea Komlosy demonstrates that popular understandings of work have varied radically in different ages and countries. Looking at labour history around the globe from the 13th to the 21st centuries, Komlosy sheds light on both discursive concepts as well as the concrete coexistence of multiple forms of labour—paid and unpaid, free and unfree. Komlosy’s narrative adopts a distinctly global and feminist approach, revealing the hidden forms of unpaid and hyper-exploited labour which often go ignored, yet are key to the functioning of the capitalist world-system.

Résumé:
Unknown Fields is a nomadic design studio that ventures out on expeditions into the shadows cast by the contemporary city, to uncover the industrial ecologies and precarious wilderness its technology and culture set in motion. "Tales from the dark side of the city" is a book series that forms an atlas to the territories and stories of a city that stretches across the entire planet, a city that sits between documentary and fiction, a city of dislocated sites, of drone footage and hidden-camera investigations, of interviews and speculative narratives, of toxic objects and distributed matter from distant grounds. They are a collection of tales from the constellation of elsewheres that are conjured into being by the city’s wants and needs, fears and dreams. The series includes stories developed from expeditions through Bolivia and the Atacama Desert, the Western Australian Outback, the South China Sea and Inner Mongolia, the gemfields of Madagascar, Far North Alaska and the black sites of the United States.

Each object passes by a window, one after another, on a constantly looping conveyor belt. A National Trust sign protecting ‘Culturefield’, a chess set, a pair of dead pigeons, a kitchen sink. Found, fabricated, everyday and exceptional, these objects may represent the richness of our existence, mapping its totality one object at a time. Through this work and a series of writings, Fieldwork serves as a reader to Gander’s on-going and ever-evolving practice.

Georges Perec was a French novelist, film-maker, documentalist, and essayist, and also a member of the Oulipo group. Perec’s ‘Species of Space’ is a constellation of texts published in 1974 that investigates different spaces. Its primary focus is the order and system in which the texts are organised. This inventory is the theme of this book, which consists of essay contributions by nine artists, including Mohamed Camara and Kristina Jansson. Initiated by artists Cecilia Darle and Kristina Bength, the project also manifests in an exhibition. Their point of departure is Perec’s writings, in which limitations and rules become a working method that hints at an autobiographical latency.

Résumé:
This volume presents hundreds of manifestations of one aspect of Japanese architecture: the window. Covering all manner of examples, typologies, and functions, the richly illustrated anthology gives a technical analysis of each, with photographic views from both exterior and interior, as well as diagrams detailing how interior space and functions correlate with the openings in the various buildings’ facades. Whether for light, ventilation, accessibility, permeability, (in)visibility, or a combination of these things, the humble window is revealed in its crucial role in determining how a specific architectural object is designed, constructed, perceived, and utilised.

Résumé:
Moduli 225 is a modular timber frame system for holiday homes developed from 1968 to 1974 by the Finnish architects Kristian Gullichsen and Juhani Pallasmaa. Through the use of prefabricated standard elements, the system allowed anyone to construct a building of high aesthetic quality in a flexible and modifiable way by combining components according to their personal preferences. Through the Moduli system, the industrial serial production of components was successfully combined with freedom of choice, individuality, proportional harmony, and modernist expression. The simple standard shape and geometry and the humane scale and harmony of proportion of Moduli all represent universal aesthetics.

Résumé:
Over the last decade, Copenhagen has undergone a major transformation – not just in its appearance, but in the way the city functions and is experienced by its residents. COBE’s projects are spread out over Copenhagen, but they aren’t cookie-cutter buildings that are placed without meaning or context. Each structure is highly aware of what the local markers mean in a globalised world. What unites them is the architects’ desire to achieve a more sustainable, socially inviting urban environment for city residents. This monograph speaks to all those who live and work in cities, with contributions ranging from established architects and architecture critics to the those in municipal and urban planning roles and the residents themselves.

Résumé:
The latest instalment of the ‘Contemporary Architect’s Concept Series’ features Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, a Tokyo-based office active since 1998. The book was designed by So Hashizume, who also designed the Schemata Architects website. As such, it is an extension and continued expression of the office’s identity, a concept that encourages referring to the website while reading the book. Seven contributors write about Nagasaka and his practice – including long-time book lover Hiroshi Eguchi, who helped produce this edition – while Nagasaka in turn responds with his thoughts on architecture and design, plus his own work and activities beyond building.
