Résumé:
Built in Tokyo in 1961, the Umbrella House is the smallest residential home created by Japanese architect and mathematician Kazuo Shinohara. More than 60 years later, a stroke of good fortune made it possible to save the Umbrella House from demolition and move it to a new location, where it now stands on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The wooden house’s post-and-beam construction references traditional Japanese domestic and temple architecture. Experts from Japan and Europe supervised the dismantling of the house in Tokyo and its reassembly in Weil am Rhein. This concise volume traces the long journey of the Umbrella House, in illustrations including impressions from 1960s Japan, architectural designs and plans, and photographs documenting its dismantling and reassembly at its new location. Texts by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Shin-ichi Okuyama and David B. Stewart discuss the Umbrella House against the background of Japanese architectural discourse between 1960 and the present.

This book was conceived when fashion and interiors photographer Todd Selby began taking portraits of dynamic and creative people —authors, musicians, artists, and designers — in their home environments and posting them on his web site. Nosy by nature, he wanted to see how personal style was reflected in private spaces. He found his answer in the color-rich and eclectic quarters of a diverse group of subjects, including Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler, Faris Rotter, Andre Walker, and Olivier Zahm, in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney, and London. Each profile is accompanied by Selby’s watercolor portraits of the subjects and objects from their homes, and illustrated questionnaires, which Selby asks each sitter to fill out. This book consists of over thirty profiles, many of which have never-before-seen, selected exclusively for the book. The result is a collection of unique spaces bursting with energy and personality that together create a colorful hodgepodge of inspirational interiors.

Résumé:
With artful wit and rigor, cartographer Denis Wood has written numerous books (including the influential bestseller The Power of Maps) that reorient his readers not only to our neighborhoods, homes and bodies, but also to our own very human instinct to understand where we live by mapmaking. At the heart of Wood's investigations is a near-legendary endeavor: the Boylan Heights maps, begun in 1982, and now published in Everything Sings. Surveying his century-old, half-square mile neighborhood Boylan Heights in Raleigh, North Carolina, Wood began by paring away the inessential "map crap" (scale, orientation, street grids) and, in searching for the revelatory in the unmapped and the unmappable, he ended up plotting such phenomena as radio waves permeating the air, the light cast by street lights and Halloween pumpkins on porches. Wood's maps accumulate into a multi-layered story about one neighborhood that tells the larger story of what constitutes the places we call home. With an introduction by Ira Glass.

Résumé:
In the early 1950s, many in the architectural profession turned their gaze towards India, where an ideal modern city seemed to be becoming a reality. When Le Corbusier and his team started work in February 1951 in Chandigarh, American planner Albert Mayer and his young principal architect Matthew Nowicki had already completed a land development plan for the site. The challenge Le Corbusier then faced was to demonstrate how a city designed from the drawing board could feel humane, functional and viable once built. Once the home of public officials, Chandigarh has become a vibrant garden city and a magnet for the booming Indian software industry. Attracted to the idea of a possible dialogue and contradiction between European architecture and Indian lifestyle, German ethnographer Bärbel Högner began photographing the city. Chandigarh: Living with Le Corbusier surveys Le Courbusier's contribution to India's first planned city, while simultaneously revealing Högner's passionate interest and impeccable eye for architectural detail.

Résumé:
Today, one in five homeowners in American cities and suburbs lives in a multifamily home rather than a single-family dwelling. As the American dream evolves, precipitated by declining real estate prices and a renewed interest in city living, many predict that condos will become the predominant form of housing in the 21st century. In this unprecedented study Matthew Gordon Lasner explores the history of co-owned multifamily housing in the United States, from New York City's first co-op, in 1881, to contemporary condo and townhouse complexes coast to coast. Lasner explains the complicated social, economic, and political factors that have increased demand for this way of living, situating the trend within the larger housing market and broad shifts in residential architecture. He contrasts the prevalence and popularity of condos, townhouses, and other privately governed communities with their ambiguous economic, legal, and social standing, as well as their striking absence from urban and architectural history.

The work of Japanese architect Toyo Ito explores the dynamic relationship between buildings and their environments. His principal focus is on developing an architecture free of the grid system, which he believes homogenizes people and their lives. Toyo Ito: Forces of Nature documents the architects 2009 Kassler lecture at the Princeton University School of Architecture. Told primarily in Ito's own voice, the book features the edited lecture transcript, as well as an interview with the architect by Julian Worrall and a new translation of Ito's 1980 essay The Projection of the Profane World onto the Sacred. Projects illustrated in the book include: Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (unbuilt), Taichung Opera House, Tama Art University Library, and Kakamigahara Crematorium. Résumé:
Call Ampersand Response is a collaborative artwork made through an exchange of images via email. Between 2011 and 2017 Canadian artists Michael Dumontier and Micah Lexier conceived this activity as a way to share with each other their mutual interest in found images, line drawings and used books. The starting image was a circle on a rectangle; every subsequent image was visually connected to the previous one. It was understood from the outset that they had to use images that could be scanned from physical items they already had at home (no images from the internet), such as children's books, technical manuals and assorted ephemera. The call-and-response nature of the enterprise can be appreciated in the pairs of facing pages that present themselves as you go through the book. This second edition, expanding on the Nieves edition of 2013, includes the entire project of 196 exchanges that make up Dumontier and Lexier's clever, competitive, meandering conversation.

Résumé:
The monograph is the first to cover the life and artistic career of Michele Zaza in systematic fashion. With an introductory essay on the historical and critical background of his work, this volume documents his production from the 1970s to the present day through a chronology replete with illustrations, unpublished materials, texts and quotations of the artist. The production ranges from the early sequences of photographs, with their symbolic references to the artist’s own body, the figures of his parents, and his family home, to the creation of large installations, characterized by the presence of photographic elements and sculptures with pure and totemic forms that hold a direct dialogue with their architectural setting. In a vision of existence in which everything is interconnected, he aspires in his work to a transcendence of the contingent, immersing the viewer in an environment that has been re-created through images but is at the same time real.

Résumé:
Basel-born architect Max Alioth was a prominent figure on the Swiss architecture and culture scene. Alioth was a co-founder of Basels’ Architecture Museum in 1984, which in 2006 became the Swiss Architecture Museum (S AM). Together with his wife Susanna Biedermann, he founded the École Supérieure des Arts Visuels (ÉSAV) in Marrakech, Morocco, for which he also designed the main campus building. This first monograph on Max Alioth illuminates his achievements from various perspectives. Selected architectural designs from 1961–2007 are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and texts. These include single-family homes, a retirement home, multi-unit housing, Basel’s Museum of Antiquities, as well as the ÉSAV building in Marrakech. Moreover, the book introduces Alioth also as a visual artist through reproductions of sketches, drawings, and watercolors. Essays by architect Roger Diener, the S AM’s director Andreas Ruby, the director of ÉSAV Vincent Melilli, and art historian and publicist Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus round out this volume.

Résumé:
As New York came to a halt with COVID, Michael Kimmelman composed an email to a group of architects, historians, writers, and friends, inviting them to take a walk. What began with a lighthearted trip to explore Broadway’s shuttered theater district and a stroll along Museum Mile when the museums were closed soon took on a much larger meaning and ambition. These intimate, funny, richly detailed conversations between Kimmelman and his companions became anchors for millions of Times readers during the pandemic. The walks unpacked the essence of urban life and its social fabric—the history, plans, laws, feats of structural engineering, architectural highlights, and everyday realities that make up the city. Filled with stunning photographs documenting the city during the era of COVID, this book is the ultimate insider’s guide. A kaleidoscopic portrait of an enduring metropolis, it reveals why New York continues to inspire and to mean so much to those who call it home and to countless others.
