Résumé:
Photography’s development as a new form of art and technology coincided with profound changes in the way China engaged with the world in the nineteenth century. The medium evolved in response to war, trade, travel, and a desire for knowledge about an unfamiliar place. "Power and perspective" provides a rich account of the exchanges among photographers, artists, patrons, and subjects in the treaty port cities that connected China and the West. Drawing primarily from the Peabody Essex Museum’s historic and largely unpublished collection of photographs, this generously illustrated volume examines the confrontations and collaborations that shaped the adoption and practice of photography in China. Offering an original reassessment of the colonial legacy of the medium, "Power and perspective" addresses photography’s representations of racial hierarchy and its entanglement with histories of European imperialism in nineteenth-century China.

Résumé:
Minor White, Aaron Siskind, and Harry Callahan carved out a new role for photographers and their art in the decades after World War Two. "Photography as a way of life" traces how these influential teachers and theorists reimagined the medium as a livelihood and a life’s work. Together with growing markets for snapshots and photojournalism, the postwar years saw the emergence of photography as an established field of study in higher education. In this beautifully produced book, Brendan Fay takes readers from the late 1940s through the 1970s to explore how White, Siskind, and Callahan transformed the ways photography was taught, shown, and understood. Inclined toward abstraction and personally expressive images, they modeled a commitment to art in the face of commercial and professional pressures. In classrooms and private workshops and through exhibitions, photobooks, and magazines—including Aperture, with White as its founding editor—they offered training and inspiration while building a devoted audience for their pictures.

Résumé:
Montreal, like other major cities, has inspired an astonishing number of photographers intent on capturing the urban experience. For some, the camera has served as a coping mechanism with which to process the difficult aspects of city life. For others, it has provided a recording device to save vital facets of Montreal from being forgotten. For others still, it has been a means of self-expression integral to a personal creative process. "Pounding the pavement" brings together thirty groups of work that exemplify the wide variety of approaches photographers have adopted when depicting the metropolis. What emerges from this unconventional assemblage is a history of Montreal, or at least a history of the ways Montrealers have used the street. The images occasionally reveal the city's beauty but more often convey its complexity, contradictions, diversity and comedy. Above all, they conjure the qualities that make some people want to leave Montreal and others want to stay forever.

Résumé:
Wild or cultivated, rural or urban, solitary or within a forest, trees have long provided a compelling source of inspiration for artists and photographers alike. Both as stand-alone aesthetic objects and as symbols of broader cultural significance, trees have an understated, sometimes underappreciated, ability to evoke a deep, primal sense of wonder. Whether captured as functional botanical records or as a means of creative expression, "Into the Woods" is an introduction to the ways in which distinctive patterns of branch, bark, leaf, and root have continued to offer arresting subjects for photographers across the centuries.

Résumé:
This book celebrates the life and work of acclaimed New Brunswick photographer Thaddeus Holownia, former head of Fine Arts and professor emeritus at Mount Allison University, and recipient of the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for High Achievement in the Arts. As well as providing a biographical overview, Peter Sanger’s lyrical survey contextualizes Holownia’s extensive body of work, revealing how his photographs “construct, refine, vary, sustain, and share patterns of spatial structure, imagery, and thematic implication in a continuous present which is the true tense of Holownia’s art.”
