Résumé:
The desire to have a home of one’s own is still the leading motivation for those who wish to construct or purchase buildings. Row and twin houses and ribbon developments constitute an affordable alternative to the single-family house, especially for young families. In times of tight budgets and rising investment costs, they represent a sensible alternative to the freestanding single-family house, particularly in terms of their use of open space. That they can also be appealing, high-quality houses is shown by the selected international examples in this new volume in the series In Detail. The projects presented are organized by building material and clearly documented with an area map, ground plans, and interrelated sections. The documentation of examples is supplemented by technical articles offering concrete support and assistance for the planner and building sponsor. In addition to analyzing the typology of the high-density, single-family house, the volume introduces different planning and financing models as well as energy-saving building methods and construction with prefabricated parts.

"The making of V East" embodies the V's mission to make art, design, and creativity available to everyone. It is a sourcebook of creativity that will inspire the artists and designers of today and tomorrow. The site in East London encompasses V East Storehouse (now opened to great acclaim) and V East Museum. Together, they are an open-access repository for over half a million works that span every creative discipline, and a new museum that celebrates making and creativity's power to bring change by spotlighting the people and ideas that shape global culture right now. If that weren't enough, it holds the David Bowie archive. "The making of V East" sets out the ambitions of this landmark development. Celebrating the buildings' home in the creative crucible of East London, and showcasing the story of the two locations, it is a truly collaborative project at a local and global scale. The book brings together a multitude of contributions, from curators, project managers, educators, artists and others—with reflections on the future of museums from directors, architects, and curators across the world.

Résumé:
Set in a beautiful tree-sided valley in England’s North York moors, the ruins of 800-year-old Rievaulx Abbey evoke a medieval world of Cistercian monks living and working, worshipping and seeking spiritual growth. This book provides an unprecedented account of Rievaulx, its 400 years as a monastery and its next 400 years, forsaken and deteriorating. Peter Fergusson and Stuart Harrison present the first comprehensive archaeological and architectural analysis of Rievaulx and the other buildings within its 92-acre walled precinct. They include extensive reconstruction drawings that bring to life the abbey and its infirmary, service buildings, water meadows, mills, and workshops. The authors describe Rievaulx’s remarkable architectural development from its early decades as home to a community of 650 men to its desertion after Henry VIII's Suppression. Fergusson and Harrison consider the buildings' context, architectural significance, iconography, and social and economic influences. Then, tracing the suppression of the monastery and changing perceptions of the ruin from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries, the authors complete their portrait of the spectacular abbey and its meanings across time.

Résumé:
Ed Ruscha initially gained attention in the early 1960s with paintings, drawings, and photgraphic books that focused on his fascination with the unique culture, vernacular, and sensibility of his adopted home of Los Angeles. Ruscha has been considered a 'West Coast' artist, and although Los Angeles is undeniably the source of inspiration for his art, the themes he addresses are far-reaching and universal. A growing interest in Ruscha's work in recent years has led to major exhibitions that toured the United States, and a number of individual shows in Europe, which re-evaluate his art in the broader scope. This monograph on Ruscha's work looks at the prolific and many-faceted career of an artist whose work has been variously described as pop, conceptual, or surrealist a painter as well as a print-, book-, and filmmaker. The thematic and loosely chronological structure of the book brings to light the diversity and depth of Ruscha's art, while at the same time underlining the continuity and recurrence of themes and ideas within his ever surprising and prolific career.

Résumé:
In 1945, Edith Farnsworth asked the German architect Mies van der Rohe, already renowned for his avant-garde buildings, to design a weekend home for her outside of Chicago.Their personal and professional collaboration would produce the Farnsworth House, one of the most important works of architecture of all time, a blindingly original structure made up almost entirely of glass and steel. But the minimalist marvel, built in 1951, was plagued by cost overruns and a sudden chilling of the two friends' mutual affection. Though the building became world famous, Edith found it impossible to live in, because of its constant leaks, flooding, and complete lack of privacy. Alienated and aggrieved, she lent her name to a public campaign against Mies, cheered on by Frank Lloyd Wright. Mies, in turn, sued her for unpaid monies. The ensuing lengthy trial heard evidence of purported incompetence by an acclaimed architect, and allegations of psychological cruelty and emotional trauma. A commercial dispute litigated in a rural Illinois courthouse became a trial of modernist art and architecture itself.

Résumé:
''Making space'' is a pioneering work first published in 1984 which challenges us to look at how the built environment impacts on women’s lives. It exposes the sexist assumptions on gender and sexuality that have a fundamental impact on the way buildings are designed and our cities are planned. Written collaboratively by the feminist collective Matrix, the book provide a full blown critique of the patriarchal built environment both in the home and in public space, and outline alternative forms of practice that are still relevant today. ''Making space'' remains a path breaking book pointing to possibilities of a feminist future. Some authors worked for the London-based Matrix Feminist Architect’s collective, an architectural practice set up in 1980 seeking to establish a feminist approach to design. They worked on design projects—such as community, children and women’s centres. Others were engaged in building work, teaching and research. The new edition comes with a new introduction examining the context, process and legacy of ''Making space'' written by leading feminists in architecture.

Résumé:
A widely connected pioneer of Pop and mail art, Ray Johnson was described as ''New York’s most famous unknown artist.'' Best known for his dense, allusive collages, he stopped exhibiting in 1991, but his output did not diminish. Between 1992 and 1994, using 137 disposable cameras, he created a large body of work that is only now coming to light. Staging his artworks in settings near his home in Locust Valley, Long Island — parking lots, sidewalks, beaches, cemeteries — Johnson made photographs that make the world of everyday ''real life'' a part of his art. Within a few months, he devised a large new freestanding format for the simplified collages he began calling the ''movie stars'' of his camera tableaux. When he swam to his death at sea on 13 January 1995, Johnson left behind a vast archive that included over three thousand of the late photographs. What he called his ''new career as a photographer,'' which makes its debut in print here, marked the close of a romance with the camera that had spanned four decades of relentless invention.
