Résumé:
"Grand avenues" tells the riveting story of Pierre Charles L’Enfant and the creation of Washington D.C. - from the seeds of his inspiration to the fulfillment of his extraordinary vision. L’Enfant’s story is one of consuming passion, high emotion, artistic genius, and human frailty. As a boy he studied drawing at the most prestigious art institute in the world. As a young man he left his home in Paris to volunteer in the army of the American colonies, where he served under George Washington. There he would also meet many of the people who would have a profound impact on his life, including Alexander Hamilton and James Monroe. And it was Washington himself who, in 1791, entrusted L’Enfant with the planning of the nation’s capital - and reluctantly allowed him to be dismissed from the project eleven months later. The plan for the city was published under another name, and for the remainder of his life L’Enfant fought for recognition of his achievement. But he would not live to see that day, and a century would pass before L’Enfant would be given credit for his brilliant design.

Résumé:
The Housing Divide examines the generational patterns in New York City's housing market and neighborhoods along the lines of race and ethnicity. The book provides an in-depth analysis of many immigrant groups in New York, especially providing an understanding of the opportunities and discriminatory practices at work from one generation to the next. Through a careful read of such factors as home ownership, housing quality, and neighborhood rates of crime, welfare enrollment, teenage pregnancy, and educational achievement, Emily Rosenbaum and Samantha Friedman provide a detailed portrait of neighborhood life and socio-economic status for the immigrants of New York. The book paints an important, if disturbing, picture. The authors argue that not only are Blacks—regardless of generation—disadvantaged relative to members of other racial/ethnic groups in their ability to obtain housing in high-quality neighborhoods, but that housing and neighborhood conditions actually decline over generations. Rosenbaum and Friedman's findings suggest that the future of racial inequality in this country will increasingly isolate Blacks from all other groups. In other words, the "color line" may be shifting from a line separating Blacks from Whites to one separating Blacks from all non-Blacks.

Résumé:
At the start of the twenty-first century, globalization forced a rethinking of some of the categories—such as “the people”—that had been traditionally associated with the now-eroding state. Virno argues that the category of “multitude,” elaborated by Spinoza and for the most part left fallow since the seventeenth century, is a far better tool to analyze contemporary issues than the Hobbesian concept of “people” favored by classical political philosophy. Hobbes, who detested the notion of multitude, defined it as shunning political unity, resisting authority, and never entering into lasting agreements. “When they rebel against the state,” Hobbes wrote, “the citizens are the multitude against the people.” But the multitude isn't just a negative notion; it is a rich concept that allows us to examine anew plural experiences and forms of nonrepresentative democracy. Drawing from philosophy of language, political economics, and ethics, Virno shows that being foreign, “not-feeling-at-home-anywhere,” is a condition that forces the multitude to place its trust in the intellect. In conclusion, Virno suggests that the metamorphosis of the social systems in the West during the 1980s and 1990s precipitated a paradoxical “Communism of the Capital.”

Résumé:
Neoptolemos Michaelides (1920–92) was a pioneer of modern architecture in Cyprus. His designs are based on the desire to develop principles that combine modern architecture with traditional Cypriot construction methods—and the knowledge preserved therein regarding the choice of materials, geographical orientation, natural climate control, and the internal organization of buildings. These principles are rooted in his studies of Western philosophy and even more in his affinity with Eastern philosophical thought, especially the spiritual importance of a harmonious relationship with nature. Between his respect for pure, natural materials and his awareness of elemental forces, his buildings seem both to worship nature and to evoke the Shintoism of Japan. In this first-ever book on the architecture of Neoptolemos Michaelides, the distinguished American architectural historian Kenneth Frampton presents his work in two essays. The first, illustrated with historical photos and documents, is dedicated to thirteen of Michaelides’ most important buildings. The second takes a close look at Michaelides’ own home in Nicosia. New photographs and plan drawings created just for the book on a 1:100 scale document this extraordinary house in detail. The beautiful volume is rounded out with a concise biography of Michaelides.

For many years, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson has found refuge in skiing—in all kinds of weather across different forms of terrain, often following the trail beside a beloved creek near her home. Recently, as she skimmed along this path and meditated on our world's uncertainty—including environmental devastation, the rise of authoritarianism, and the effects of ongoing social injustice—her mind turned to the ice beside her, and the snow beneath her feet. And she asked herself: What might it mean to truly listen to water? To know not only the land on which we live, but the water that surrounds and inhabits us? To coexist with and alongside water? So begins this renowned writer's quest to discover, understand, and trace the historical and cultural interactions of Indigenous peoples with water in all its forms. On her journey, she reflects on the teachings, traditions, stories, and creative work of others in her community—particularly those of her longtime friend Doug Williams, an Elder whose presence suffuses these pages; reads deeply the words of thinkers from other communities whose writing expands her own; and begins to shape a "Theory of Water" that reimagines relationships among all beings and life-forces.

Rafael Viñoly is arguably our most consummate practitioner of architecture; Herbert Muschamp of the New York Times calls him "the most elegant architect now practicing in the United States," one whose powerful buildings "quicken your awareness of the present and its untapped possibilities." In a breathtaking list of major commissions, Viñoly has taken projects of an often conventional nature-conference centers, recital halls, exhibition halls, sports facilities-and transformed them into unconvential works of beauty, notable for their lucidity, and often breathtaking technical prowess. This encyclopedic monograph, designed by Lars Müller in the same spirit as his "Peter Zumthor: Works", is the first on Viñoly, and includes projects in the United States, Argentina, Egypt, Korea, and Japan. Featured are the recently opened Kimmel Performing Arts Center-the new home of the Philaldelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Convention Center, the Climate Prediction Center on the Palisades, the Princeton University Stadium, and the dazzling Tokyo Forum-the gracefully expressive building Muschamp describes as "an absolutist building, perfectly realized." An essay by Joan Ockman, Director of the Buell Center of American Architecture at Columbia University, introduces Viñoly's work, which is copiously documented in more than 500 color images and drawings.

Résumé:
How exactly do small towns become suburbs? How do country roads turn into commercial strips? And what can planners do to prevent these changes in the future? Using the state of Vermont as the rural ideal, the authors compare contemporary vs. traditional development to demonstrate how today's primary way of developing land - suburban sprawl - is forever changing the look of rural American. Using a host of aerial photographs - many altered through computer simulation to illustrate how landscapes are transformed over time - "Above and beyond" argues for a return to traditional development patterns that produce more compact cities and towns. Highlighting widespread trends in contemporary land development - from fragmentation (our tendency to spread out) to separation (our tendencey to allocate separate areas of town for living, working, shopping and playing) - the authors offer case examples of coummunities that have succeeded in curbing those trends. They show how these communities have invigorated their town centers; lured home buyers back to town; integrated working, shopping and recreation areas; nurtured a sense of identity and community; rewritten land-use regulations to allow for more compact developing; and overcome the "cars rule" mentality of suburban development.

Résumé:
The first decades of the twentieth century brought enormous change in Britain. Men’s and women’s roles came under scrutiny, class and social structures were transformed. This book casts new light on the notorious Bloomsbury Group and how the issues of their day influenced their interpretation and decoration of the home. Christopher Reed analyzes the rooms designed by Bloomsbury artists as spaces in which to be modern. The book traces the development of Bloomsbury’s domestic aesthetic from the group’s influential promulgation of Post-Impressionism in Britain around 1910 through the 1930's. In detailed studies of rooms created for Virginia Woolf and John Maynard Keynes, among others, by Woolf’s sister Vanessa Bell and her artist colleagues Duncan Grant and Roger Fry, Reed challenges the accepted notion that these artists drifted away from modernism. He presents their work as an alternative form of modernism, later suppressed by sexist and homophobic attitudes that disparaged the decorative arts and domesticity in general, as well as Bloomsbury in particular. The aesthetic and ideological implications of the Bloomsbury interiors were international in scope, Reed argues, and constitute important episodes in this history of modernity.
