Résumé:
Frank Lloyd Wright first noted the affinity between modern Western architecture and the philosophy of the ancient Chinese writer Laotzu. In this classic work, Amos Ih Tiao Chang expands on that idea, developing the parallel with the aid of architectural drawings and Chinese paintings. Now with a new foreword by David Wang, this book reveals the vitality of intangible, or negative, elements. Chang writes that these qualities make architectonic forms "come alive, become human, naturally harmonize with one another, and enable us to experience them with human sensibility." "The Tao of architecture" continues to be essential reading for understanding the intersection between architecture and philosophy.

Résumé:
From Greek and Roman times to the digital era, the library has remained central to knowledge, scholarship, and the imagination. The Meaning of the Library is a generously illustrated examination of this key institution of Western culture. Tracing what the library has meant since its beginning, examining how its significance has shifted, and pondering its importance in the twenty-first century, notable contributors—including the Librarian of Congress and the former executive director of the HathiTrust—present a cultural history of the library. In an informative introduction, Alice Crawford sets out the book's purpose and scope, and an international array of scholars, librarians, writers, and critics offer vivid perspectives about the library through their chosen fields. The Meaning of the Library will appeal to all who are interested in this vital institution's heritage and ongoing legacy.

Résumé:
An unsurpassed master of postwar Japanese realist photography and a reference for amateur photographers even today. The breadth and diversity of this Renaissance man’s oeuvre reveals untiring attention to and interest in the culture, art, faces, society, and politics of his country. With over 70,000 pictures taken between the 1920s and the 1980s, Domon Ken is considered the supreme master of Japanese photography as well as the main exponent of realism as the only approach possible. Over the years he honed his craft, shifting from propaganda photography during the war to photography as a life’s mission, in search of his own Japan: a fascinating and silent Japan of ancient temples, Buddhist sculptures, puppet theaters (where he took refuge during the war); the seductive and expressive faces of celebrities alongside the modest ones of street urchins; the poorest Japan of mining villages; and finally his most disturbing and modern work, portraying Hiroshima and its unhealed wounds.

Résumé:
City and country are generally regarded as opposites. But today’s landscape architecture explores both of them as a single system, making it possible to see the mutual dependency of these supposedly opposing developments. In view of massive changes in ecological systems, as well as increasing migration and the spread of unplanned human settlements, landscape architecture is also being confronted with global challenges. "Out there: landscape architecture in the global terrain" is a plea to redefine the discipline’s position. Innovative but complex approaches are presented in examples of specific projects from all over the world. Landscape architecture today commits itself to the spatial systems that will shape tomorrow’s society.

Résumé:
The thesis of this book is that architecture is produced by models of thought, the ruins of history, and the construction of power. All acts of architecture are theoretical and political, and all ideas serve as tools; as such the aim of the book is to examine the primary generators of architecture and to re-establish political and critical positions within the discipline. It examines how architecture is made, establishing a strong connection between the physical organisation of the world and its political dimension, through contributions from practicing architects, academics and writers from within and without architecture. "We live in models" reintroduces writing, drawing and photography beyond their representational forms as critical vessels for making, analysing and criticising architecture.

Résumé:
Modeling History revisits the material legacy of Kenneth Frampton's course Studies in Tectonic Culture, a collection of models familiar to anyone who has passed through Avery Hall. It looks back in order to project forward, and asks how the construction of architectural history through the making of models might generate new histories, practices, and ways of seeing. Produced on the occasion of the exhibition 'Stagecraft: Models and Photos' at Columbia University's Arthur RossArchitecture Gallery, Modeling History moves between modes of representation, past and present, to explore Frampton's theory and pedagogy concerning tectonics. The sixteen photographs enclosed in this book by photographer James Ewing reveal the possibilities of Frampton's radical approach today. Each image not only reengages with a model built during Frampton's seminar, but, by playing with the potentials of photography, also aspires to project similar material, tectonic, and poetic realities. Printed in a limited edition of 250 copies.

LOT-EK’s work reveals extraordinary transformations of ordinary things—from their famous shipping container projects onward—combining maker culture and hacker culture into beautiful and radical visions for sustainable and meaningful living. LOT-EK: Objects + Operations surveys dozens of projects—built, unbuilt and in-progress; polemical, practical, and in-between—complemented by photographs from LOT-EK’s multi-year URBAN SCAN project, a vast photographic document of infrastructure and incident, as well as essays by Thomas de Monchaux and interviews with founding partners Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano.
