In the first half of the twentieth century, a new kind of architecture appeared across Europe and North America, characterized by plain, often pure white walls; wide windows; flat roofs; and prominent balconies, terraces, and roof gardens. From houses to hospitals, the new architecture featured large expanses of glass and was constructed from steel and reinforced concrete—or designed to look that way—and inspired by a desire to be functional, hygienic, universal, democratic, and economical.

Résumé:
This publication reveals how German attitudes toward national identity, modernity and technology are crucial to understanding German design. Aynsley traces the historical development of German design, beginning in the 1870s with the first dedicated Arts and Crafts schools and stretching through to the famous institutions of the Bauhaus and the Ulm Hochschule für Gestaltung. He analyses the works of leading figures such as Peter Behrens and Hannes Meyer, through to Ingo Maurer and Jil Sander, and many others in design specialties, including graphics, industrial products and furniture, fashion and architecture. He also offers the first consideration of the contrasting traditions of East and West Germany between 1945 and 1989. Whether examining the pre-First World War department store, the National Socialist fashion system or East Germany’s official design culture, German design significantly affected citizens’ daily lives.

Résumé:
Spanning from 1945 through today, the book examines Brazilian architecture beyond the works of renowned architects such as Oscar Niemeyer and the “Carioca” architects of Rio de Janeiro. Williams investigates issues such as the use of historic architecture, the importance of leisure and luxury, the role of the favela as a backdrop and inspiration for development, and the rapid growth of cities. From the designated world heritage site of Brasilia—a capital city that was planned from the ground up—to the installation work of artists such as Hélio Oiticica, Brazil delves into the origins and far-reaching influence of Brazil’s architectural modernism. Richard J. Williams teaches in the School of Arts, Culture and Environment at the University of Edinburgh.

Résumé:
With nearly 300 archival photographs, drawings, and original floor plans, Houses of Missouri, 1870–1940, offers an intimate tour behind the facades of 45 purely American houses. Among these are Greystone, the pastoral Gothic cottage of Major Emory Foster in Pevely; Oak Hall, the opulent mansion of the legendary Kansas City Star publisher William Rockhill Nelson; the iconoclastic “machine in the prairie,” Samuel Marx-designed Ladue residence for department store magnate Morton May; and Chatol, the striking Art Moderne “farmhouse” in rural Boone county. The authors bring to life the fortunes, motivations, and aspirations of their wealthy and upstanding house owners who rigorously defined what was “suitable” and respectable living in America’s heartland.
