Résumé:
The first volume introduces readers to Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son, a cartoonist trying to come to terms with his father, his father's terrifying story, and history itself. Its form, the cartoon (the Nazis are cats, the Jews mice), succeeds perfectly in shocking us out of any lingering sense of familiarity with the events described, approaching, as it does, the unspeakable through the diminutive. Tragic and comic by turns, it attains a new complexity of theme and a precision of thought new to comics and rare in any medium.

Résumé:
In addition to its practical functions, such as helping to optimize safety and security, lighting also has another principal task creating emotions. Light and color can be used to achieve the most varied and astonishing effects. These effects are dependent on the project and spatial environment, but they also depend in large measure on cultural context. This study is based on forty-seven interviews with lighting designers from North and South America, Europe, and Asia. This publication explores in a systematic fashion what aesthetic, emotional, and atmospheric tasks a good lighting design can accomplish.

Photographs preserve the past, while archaeology unearths what has been preserved. Put together, photography and archaeology bring the past into the present, making its image available for a wide audience. In Photography and Archaeology, Frederick Bohrer examines some of history’s most famous archaeological excavations, as well as lesser-known finds, from the Mediterranean, Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Bohrer examines the ways these sites have been represented in photographs and shows how the development of photography in the nineteenth century brought archaeology to the attention of the public.

Résumé:
Andrew Jackson Downing was among the first to develop aesthetic theories that differed sharply from those perpetuated in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Europe. He designed houses based upon American democratic values and advocated for domestic design that would satisfy basic human needs along with the desire to live well. In this book, Caren Yglesias, a practicing architect, examines Downing's legacy with an eye for relevance to today's domestic landscape. She builds on Downing's work in order to redefine what makes a "complete," or nurturing and fulfilling, house and grounds.

Résumé:
This book explores the history and significance of rammed earth construction in Central Europe, particularly in Switzerland, using historical examples to investigate the potential of this building technique for contemporary construction. Rammed earth has material advantages, such as its strength, durability, and non-combustible nature, while potential disadvantages, such as on-site weather dependency, can be circumvented by using prefab elements. It is ecologically sustainable and completely recyclable as well. This pioneering and comprehensive study contributes to safeguarding existing architectural heritage while also providing a foundation for further research.

Résumé:
More just spatial practices are to be found in the diversity and nuances of myriad space-making paradigms that tackle local challenges while providing credible responses to current global issues. This book proposes a collection of spatial protocols following an imaginary line: the 45°N parallel. This line crosses Europe, from the Atlantic Coast to the Black Sea. The practices are named rituals because they strengthen the potential for collective action in order to reach systemic change. They are labeled radical because they are highly transformative and point toward possible futures.

A wide-ranging international survey of case studies is drawn from countries with healthcare practices. The introduction is followed by three chapters that set the scene: a post-War history of the British hospital; an examination of the crucial and undervalued early inception stages of a hospital; and a revealing analysis of the changing context of the financing and construction of hospitals. Four chapters present evidence from around the world, spotlighting the UK, Europe, the USA and Australia. Finally, the book closes with a speculation on the architectural form of the future hospital.

Résumé:
Looking at recent social struggles including the university strikes in Europe, the Spanish ¡Democracia real YA! organization, the Arab revolts, and the Occupy movement, Raunig argues for a reassessment of the importance of cultural and knowledge production. The central role of the university, he asserts, is not as a factory of knowledge but as a place of creative disobedience. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze's concept of "modulation" as the market-driven imperative for the constant transformation and reinvention of subjectivity, in Factories of Knowledge, Industries of Creativity, Raunig charts alternative horizons for resistance.

Résumé:
Presenting images found throughout Europe in works on natural history, medicine, botany, horticulture, and garden design, and studies of insects, birds, and animals, the contributors emphasize their artistic as well as scientific values. Illustrators are shown to have been both artists and either naturalists or gardeners, bringing to their work aesthetic judgment and empirical observation. Their fascinating images receive a fresh, wide-ranging analysis that covers such topics as innovation, patronage, readership, reception, technologies of production, and the relationship between the fine arts and scientific depictions of nature
