Résumé:
These elaborate CAD-reconstructions, developed by Darmstadt Technical University, provide a representative survey of the architecture of synagogues in Germany before their destruction. What is more, they convey visual impressions of the diversity, the splendour and the significance of the synagogue in the history of German urban architecture from the early nineteenth century until 1938. In doing so, they also demonstrate the potential of such media to contribute to a new culture of remembrance. Reactions to the first exhibition in 2000 in Bonn, Germany, were resounding, with international praise for the quality of the simulations and their value as an instrument in the service of historical truth. This publication presents the results for the first time in print, to coincide with the launching of an exhibition in Tel Aviv which will travel to New York, Los Angeles and further international venues.

Résumé:
Museums are architectural trend-setters. Culture sponsoring and their increasing role as tourist attractions are guarantees for an ongoing boom in museum construction. A tradition and typology developed over the centuries, the planning and practical experience gained in recent decades and cutting-edge technology all contribute to the practice of modern day museum building. History and form, site development, floor plan, air-conditioning and climate technology are just some examples of the subjects treated systematically and contextually in the first section of this design manual. Some 70 international museum case-studies by renowned architects such as Tadao Ando, Stephen Holl, Renzo Piano and Herzog & de Meuron exemplify solutions and emphasize specific museum design issues such as spatial organisation and lighting.

Planned in 1930/31 in extremely difficult circumstances, it is a minor miracle that the Cité Internationale Universitaire Swiss halls of residence, when built, so closely resembled Le Corbusier's original innovative design. The Pavillon Suisse has accommodated Swiss students in Paris since it was opened in July 1933. This monograph is the result of years of dedicated research into every aspect of the building -- socio-political premises, planning, design and construction, the aesthetic and functional achievements it represents, and Le Corbusier's own renovations in 1948, 1953, and 1957.

Objectivity and attention to detail distinguish the architecture of Paul Baumgarten (1900-1984). Daring proportions, a quality of lightness and the perfect match of structure and materials characterize his work. The Federal Supreme Court of Germany, subject of this monograph, was specifically conceived by Paul Baumgarten as the architectural expression of a modern legal practice and jurisprudence. Duotone photographs by Florian Profitlich capture what is now a protected historical monument, and original, previously unpublished plans provide documentation of the building's guiding architectural concept.

Résumé:
What are the technical demands involved in carrying out large-scale projects? How do considerations of design and architectural appearance influence the form of load-bearing structures, and how can these be made visible? Just what kind of engineering achievement do, for example, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur represent? "Expressing Structure" addresses questions such as these by documenting 19 case studies of exceptionally challenging high-rise buildings and extreme broad-span structures such as airport terminals and sport arenas. Examples portrayed include New York JFK-Airport's new Terminal One, the Plaza 66 office tower in Shanghai, Fort Worth Museum of Art in Texas and performance centres such as the Gaylord Arena in Nashville and the Philips Arena in Atlanta.

Translucent materials give architects far more possibilities to exploit the sensual interplay of light and the fascination of interior-exterior interaction than plain glass, a fact proved by their increasing application. Traditionally, stretched paper, finely-cut stone, or stained glass were used to create mood and atmosphere. These are now giving way to a new generation of innovative materials -- composite glass, synthetic panels, membranes and perforated metals. From the series entitled "Detail Praxis".

Résumé:
The inner courtyard of a Moroccan house promises refuge from the bustle of the outside world, while remaining in touch with nature. Reached by a dark and winding passage, the courtyard is the physical and spiritual centre of the house. Green vegetation, flowering plants (in the garden-like Riads), and fountains fed by narrow channels of flowing water provide a cool, shaded enclosure. Light from above combines to create a serene and sheltering atmosphere, a peaceful paradise. A venerable tradition, still very much alive. Werner Blaser has captured this marvellous architecture in duotone photos.

Résumé:
Five iconic installations: one mobile and four fixed “Arteplage” locations; 500 individual structures in transition from experimental architecture to scenographics; 45 international designer teams. Illustrations, detailed plans, and instructive texts portray the architecture of the Expo in all its complexity: from Pipilotti Rist’s "Laboratory of Ideas" (Ideenlabor), visionary models of 1998 and the international competition, through to its fulfilment. The project concepts are explained by the authors in their own words: Coop Himmelb(l)au and GLS, Jean Nouvel and GIM, J. Sbriglio, and Extasia with T. Kobler/Vehovar + Jauslin, West 8/Diller + Scofidio.
