In the 1980s, Bilbao was Spain’s most polluted city due to the mining and iron industries that had served as its main sources of employment, by then in terminal decline. In 1993, seven years after Spain joined the European Union, a radical transformation was initiated, and celebrated architects such as Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster, and Frank O. Gehry were brought on board to design buildings that would serve as icons of the reinvented Bilbao. Swiss photographer Roger Wehrli documented this transformation, which was so successful that Bilbao has since become a model for former industrial centers throughout Europe.

Résumé:
New series of photographs by Geert Goiris, addressing the topic of our contemporary oil culture. Commissioned by Rubis Mécénat cultural fund, Goiris was given permission to the Rubis Terminal sites in Rouen and other sites in Europe. He tackles the subject from the outside, limiting himself to that particular moment when oil is seemingly without drama. This is not about the technical feat of extracting the oil from the earth, nor about the economic, social and/or geopolitical effects generated by its existence. Rather it is about the in-between stations, the moments when oil is only potentially active. Limited edition with print.

Résumé:
Through the course of the 1970s and 1980s, Luigi Ghirri pursued his extraordinary project, open-ended and mercurial, marked by empathy for the changing everyday spaces of his time. Over the course of his short career, Ghirri would produce a vast body of photographs without parallel in the Europe of his time and numerous writings which would have an indelible impact on the history of photography. The focus of the project is on Ghirri’s quietly compelling project to create a new kind of geography, located in his fascination with representations of the world, in the form of reproductions, pictures, posters, models and maps.

Résumé:
Hermann Czech gained recognition in Europe in the 1970s with projects based on a strategy of continuation and convention instead of contrast. His work includes homes, hotels, schools, and urban planning, as well as small-scale interventions and exhibition design. In rejecting facile connections between theory and practice, he developed a multidimensional, critical and early postmodern position amid a climate of reformation and avant-gardism. Guest-edited by Christian Kühn of Technische Universität Wien, this issue explores the many facets of Czech’s architectural thought and practice through works ranging from furniture design to urban-scale infrastructure.

It tests the achievement of urban conservation through case studies from across Europe and elsewhere, assessing them against the sustainability agenda.
