Résumé:
"Space" is a photographic exploration of Japanese architecture and design in size-constricted areas, exploring imaginative, ingenious, and revolutionary solutions to space-compromised living. Masters in the art of managing small spaces, the Japanese in their design have given rise to a particular style of ingenuity. In their work, Japanese interior designers and architects constantly draw on cultural traditions, while using a modern, even radical approach. Whether in the use of lightweight partitions to create flexible spaces, deliberate profligacy to give a feeling of generosity, or strange perspectives, the results are not mere workaday solutions, but artistic and unusual ones that can turn a lack of space into a surfeit of style.

Résumé:
"The architecture of Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company is a monograph on the urban design and architecture firm started by Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in 1980 and is now known simply as DPZ. Credited with popularizing small towns and villages as welcome alternatives to the bleak monotony of the suburbs, DPZ champions vernacular architecture (traditional buildings with ties to local culture) in neighborhoods that share the same common features that made small-town living so livable. This book illustrates representative buildings, mainly houses, that make up some of these communities in such places as Seaside, Florida, Kentlands, Maryland, and Markham, Ontario. In addition, the book showcases individual buildings that demonstrate DPZ’s reinvigoration of a simple vernacular architecture, including the Hibiscus House in Coconut Grove, Florida, and the Carambola Villas in St. Croix.

Résumé:
Chicago is universally recognized as the cradle of modern architecture. It is known worldwide for the development, beginning in the late 1800s, of the renowned "Chicago School" of commercial building. In the early 1900s, Chicago saw the birth of Wright's "Prairie School" of residential design, which gave rise to the modern, open-plan house we know today. Other world-renowned architects were also based in Chicago, such as Louis Sullivan, who designed the Chicago Stock Exchange, and Daniel Burnham, architect of the famous Rookery Building of the 1890s. The 1940s were to see the completion of Mies van der Rohe's revolutionary Illinois Institute of Technology and his astonishing Lake Shore Drive apartment buildings. Skidmore Owings & Merrill's landmark Inland Steel Building was finished in 1954, their John Hancock Center in 1970, and their Sears Tower in 1974. Philip Johnson and John Burgee's 190 South LaSalle Street office tower went up in 1987. The 200 illustrations in this volume all come from The Art Institute of Chicago's repository of 150,000 architectural drawings, vintage photographs, models, and building fragments, which comprise one of the most important such archives.

Résumé:
London’s modest eighteenth-century houses - those inhabited by artisans and laborers in the unseen parts of Georgian London - can tell us much about the culture of that period. This fascinating book examines largely forgotten small houses that survive from the eighteenth century and sheds new light on both the era’s urban architecture and the lives of a culturally distinctive metropolitan population. Peter Guillery discusses how and where, by and for whom the houses were built, stressing vernacular continuity and local variability. He investigates the effects of creeping industrialization (both on house building and on the occupants), and considers the nature of speculative suburban growth. Providing rich and evocative illustrations, he compares these houses to urban domestic architecture elsewhere, as in North America, and suggests that the eighteenth-century vernacular metropolis has enduring influence.

Résumé:
Robert Smithson (1938–1973), an artist of paramount importance in postwar America, created radical new perspectives for landscape architecture, photography, art criticism, and site-specific installation. His Spiral Jetty - a 1,500-foot-long coil of rock built in 1970 at the edge of the Great Salt Lake - is widely appreciated as one of the most significant art projects of the twentieth century. Less well known is the connection between the Jetty and the nearby Golden Spike National Historic Site, location of the completion of the first U.S. transcontinental railroad. The link between these two monuments is but one facet of an entire complex of historical reference and reflection that structures Smithson’s work. Mirror-Travels encompasses the full span of Smithson’s career, offering a close analysis of the artist’s working model of history and featuring comprehensive case studies of three of his most influential works: The Monuments of Passaic, Incidents of Mirror-Travel in the Yucatan, and the Spiral Jetty. Incorporating abundant new material from Smithson’s personal papers and library, Jennifer Roberts offers surprising new interpretations about the artist and his responses to the social, ideological, and material contradictions of his time.

Résumé:
The first decades of the twentieth century brought enormous change in Britain. Men’s and women’s roles came under scrutiny, class and social structures were transformed. This book casts new light on the notorious Bloomsbury Group and how the issues of their day influenced their interpretation and decoration of the home. Christopher Reed analyzes the rooms designed by Bloomsbury artists as spaces in which to be modern. The book traces the development of Bloomsbury’s domestic aesthetic from the group’s influential promulgation of Post-Impressionism in Britain around 1910 through the 1930's. In detailed studies of rooms created for Virginia Woolf and John Maynard Keynes, among others, by Woolf’s sister Vanessa Bell and her artist colleagues Duncan Grant and Roger Fry, Reed challenges the accepted notion that these artists drifted away from modernism. He presents their work as an alternative form of modernism, later suppressed by sexist and homophobic attitudes that disparaged the decorative arts and domesticity in general, as well as Bloomsbury in particular. The aesthetic and ideological implications of the Bloomsbury interiors were international in scope, Reed argues, and constitute important episodes in this history of modernity.
