Résumé:
"Crafting Modernism: Mid-century American Art and Design" will provide an in-depth examination of the American studio craft movement in general, with detailed analyses of all of the major mediums (clay, wood, fibre, metal, jewellery, and glass) favoured by the greatest craftsmen of the period. Both an exhibition catalogue and an historical reference, "Crafting Modernism" explores the origins of the studio craft movement, the international influences that helped it grow in this country and abroad and its convergence with the fine arts. The post-war years were a time of particular importance for the studio movement as a new generation of craftsmen began to express cultural identity and artistic innovation as well as provide social commentary through their work in all media, which led to the proliferation of the craft movement to museums and exhibitions worldwide. Artists represented in this book include Anni Albers, Dale Chihuly, Hans Christensen, Charles and Ray Eames, Sheila Hicks, Wharton Esherick, Maurice Heaton, Dorothy Liebes, Sam Maloof, George Nakashima, Gertrud and Otto Natzler, Peter Voulkos and Russel Wright, among many others. "Crafting Modernism" is the fourth instalment of the Centenary Project begun in 1993 by the Museum of Art and Design to explore the origins and development of twentieth-century American crafts. New research has made this exhibit and book possible, exploring the rediscovery and reinvigoration of craft media in the post-war years.

Ellen Lupton and colleague Inna Alesina bring their collective design experiences to this informative and fun volume. The book opens with case studies of the design process. Lively examples show how designers can interact with physical materials to jump-start the course of thinking and inventing and how they can involve real people and real environments to take a fresh look at real problems. At the core of the book is a visual glossary of materials, organized both to inspire and inform. Everyday uses of each material are juxtaposed with experimental projects that reveal how designers from around the world have exploited materials in surprising and creative ways.

Résumé:
This showcase of new jewellery offers a global view of exciting work from 200 cutting-edge jewellery designers. Highlighting the diverse forms that contemporary jewellery takes, from simple wedding or commitment rings, to elaborate body jewellery that blurs the boundaries between art and adornment, to catwalk jewellery specially commissioned for couture collections, "Adorn" includes pieces made using the latest industrial technologies and processes, as well as more traditional methods and materials. Because most jewellers' work crosses themes, categories and styles, and is produced using a variety of techniques, the chapters are arranged by type of jewellery and each designer may feature in a number of chapters. In this way, from headpiece to toe ring, the book takes the reader on a visual journey around the body and provides a rich source of inspiration for anyone looking to design, commission or buy their own jewellery.

Résumé:
The book looks at the cultural and architectural context in which Behrens worked, his early career, and the relation of his own house in Darmstadt to his ideal of a society where life is formed as art. It also looks at his directorship of the School of Arts and Crafts in Düsseldorf, where he drew on the work of such brilliant historiographers of art and architecture as Alois Riegl and August Schmarsow. In his conclusion, Anderson considers Behrens' melancholy in the face of modern industrial society and his avoidance of a direct address of life, despite, or rather because of, his professed commitment to express life as art.
