AP144.S2.D74
Description:
File documents the unexecuted design for the headquarters of the Birmingham and Midland Institute (BMI), in Birmingham, England. This project is related to the Shantasea Development (AP144.S2.D72) from which Cedric Price resigned as architect to take on the role of architect for BMI, one of the proposed tenants for the Shantasea project. Cedric Price proposed a municipal and regional "nerve centre" to house seminar and study rooms, workshops, galleries, film, television and music studios, a library, a planetarium, and a theatre. A flexible life-cycle plan (expansion, static, contraction) for the building and the activities would allow BMI to expand in the short and medium term, and to shrink in the long term, when it was assumed that many of its roles would be replaced by the UK's Open University plan (Works II, 42). Work on the project came to a stop in 1970 under a new city council (Architectural Design, June 1971, 368). Existing conditions material consists of maps and a survey of Birmingham. Conceptual sketches and drawings include: annotated diagrammatic plans and sections used to develop the building's massing and the horizontal/vertical relationships between functional areas; axonometric views showing the building's general form/functions; plans used for calculating square footage; diagrams showing visual and physical movement through the building; information and movement charts; and flow charts showing the building's organization. Design development drawings consist of graphs showing how functional areas might be used over time. Design development and working drawings include: diagrammatic plans and sections; exploded axonometric views of the functional relationships between areas; exterior axonometric views; sectional perspectives; space allocation plans; circulation drawings; diagrams showing activities throughout the day; furniture equipment schedules; theatre seating and stair studies; and elevations for exterior cladding. Charts show links between activities/actions; activity distribution; activity/capacity; progress of pre-contract work; and the telephone network. File also includes drawings by engineering consultants Felix Samuely and Partners and Zisman, Bowyer and Partners. Presentation material includes: newspaper clippings and text concerning the project; diagrammatic plans, sections, and charts; and a photo collage of the site; and a text by Cedric Price entitled "The Present Position". Some materials in this file were published in "Cedric Price Supplement No. 3", 'Architectural Design', vol. 41, (June 1971), 364-368, and 'Cedric Price-Works II' (London: Architectural Press, 1984), 36, 42. Material in this file was produced between 1967 and 1971. Zisman Bowyer and Partners appear as the mechanical and electrical consulting engineers; Silk and Frazier as the quantity surveyors; and Versa-Serve Ltd as the catering consultants on this project. File contains cartographic materials, conceptual drawings, design development drawings, panels, photographic materials, presentation drawings, presentation panels, publication drawings, technical drawings, and textual records.

Description:
Project series documents Cornelia Hahn Oberlander's landscape project for the proposed Commonwealth Square of the Art Gallery of Hamilton, on Main Street West in Hamilton, Ontario. Oberlander worked on this project in 1999-2002 while the architectural firm Kuwabara, Payne, McKenna, Blumberg Architects was in charge of the building's renovations. The building was completed in 2005, but Oberlander's proposal for the landscaping redesign of Commonwealth Square was not realized. Oberlander's first proposal consisted in adding an oval-shaped mounded lawn in the centre of a paved plaza situated between the art gallery and Main Street West. A second proposal also documented in this project series included two curved access ramps leading to a terrace next to the building with trees planting at the far edge of the plaza and along the street and the underground parking entrance. The project series contains design development drawings for Oberlander's landscaping, such as sketches, sections, landscape plans and renderings. The project series also includes renderings and working drawings for the building by KPMB architectural firm, and building plans for the existing building used as reference. The project is also documented through correspondence, including with clients, architects and consultants, Oberlander's concept notes, documents related to the plant selection, financial documents, documentation on the art gallery, and press clippings and articles on the project. It also comprises photographs of the existing landscaping on Main Street West plaza, including the Irving Zucker Sculpture Court.

AP206.S1.1983.PR01
Description:
This project series documents residential housing for officers at the Reserve Bank of India in Chandigarh, India from 1983-1986. The project consisted of four-storey apartment blocks located on twelve blocks totalling 2.87 acres. The apartment blocks had oblong-shaped spiraling staircases at exterior openings along the buildings' elevations. Located in Sector 44B, the apartments observed both the norms of the bank's staff quarters guidelines and the architectural control established in Chandigarh. This project was proposed in two phases, the second of which integrated public spaces, amenities and maintenance quarters into the campus. The project is recorded through drawings, textual records and a photograph dating from 1983-2003. About half the drawings are originals and included are plans, elevations, sections, details and structural and electrical drawings. Many of these are working drawings, but some presentation drawings are included. The textual records consist of specifications, reports, correspondence and the project contract. The photograph shows Aditya Prakash on the roof of the finished building.

Description:
Series I consists of sketches, drawings and paintings, mostly created by Parizeau. From the period he spent in Europe (1923-1933), there are 11 student drawings in the standard presentation format of the École des Beaux-arts de Paris, a volume of course notes, as well as unidentified drawings, sketchbooks and paintings of primarily buildings and landscapes executed in Paris and during his travels in France. Drawings relating to Parizeau's architectural career in Montreal are represented in a number of independant projects, including a small chapel beside the St. Lawrence River, a pair of two-storey cabin-cottages outside of Montreal, and several residences in the city. The documents are mostly original preliminary studies with some reproductions of working drawings. It should be noted that there are also photographs of exterior details of the Laroque Residence and the Jarry Residence in documents CO2 in Series II. Reproductions of designs for worker housing by French architect Eugène Beaudoin in 1938 perhaps give a clue to Parizeau's relatively early employment of modernist forms. A residence in Baie D'Urfé is unlikely to be connected to Parizeau because its date, ca. 1955, is a decade after his death. Parizeau's concern with furniture and interior design is represented in the Archive with many lively perspective sketches in colour, and elevation and plan studies of several kinds of rooms and types of furniture. Some preliminary drawings for interiors were grouped with the Gillow house in Ville Mont-Royal, and the Walter Downs Residence in Montreal. The artworks by Parizeau consist of paintings and drawings of landscapes, buildings, still lifes and figure studies on loose sheets and in bound sketchbooks. These works are executed in a variety of media, including pencil, coloured pencil, watercolour on paper, and oil paint on masonite panels. Studies of buildings in Brittany and Paris are the subjects in three small sketchbooks, while larger spiral-bound drawing books contain some architectural plans, elevations and details. Most of these artworks and sketches were likely created in Europe before 1933.

AP144.S2.D66
Description:
File documents an unexecuted proposal for the long-term redevelopment of Lord Eliot's estate in Port Eliot, St Germans, Cornwall, United Kingdom. Cedric Price's objective was "to increase the enjoyment and delight of the total property while in no way reducing its effectiveness as an agricultural unit" (Price with Murray 1971, 27). Drawings include site plans and plans of the existing house, and design development drawings for the estate, which locate woodland areas, a viaduct, a tidal estuary, and important views from the house. Renovations to the existing house are indicated on some of the drawings. Some material from this file was published in "Cedric Price Supplement No. 2", 'Architectural Design', vol. 41, (January 1971), 27. File also contains material for a later executed design for a garden maze. Material in the file was produced between 1903 and 1991, but predominantly between 1966 and 1980 and between 1983 and 1987. File contains a conceptual drawing, design development drawings, reference drawings, photographic materials, and textual records.
