Résumé:
Lake Ontario has profoundly influenced the historical evolution of North America. For centuries it has enabled and enriched the societies that crowded its edges, from fertile agricultural landscapes to energy production systems to sprawling cities. In "The lives of Lake Ontario" Daniel Macfarlane details the lake’s relationship with the Indigenous nations, settler cultures, and modern countries that have occupied its shores. He examines the myriad ways Canada and the United States have used and abused this resource: through dams and canals, drinking water and sewage, trash and pollution, fish and foreign species, industry and manufacturing, urbanization and infrastructure, population growth and biodiversity loss. Serving as both bridge and buffer between the two countries, Lake Ontario came to host Canada’s largest megalopolis. Yet its transborder exploitation exacted a tremendous ecological cost, leading people to abandon the lake. Innovative regulations in the later twentieth century, such as the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreements, have partially improved Lake Ontario’s health.

Résumé:
The classical architectural and planning schemes conceived by Canada’s Anglo-settler elite in the early twentieth century embodied a prescriptive vision of power and grandeur for the country and its people on a scale almost unimaginable today. This provocative collection of essays examines the classical design precepts that shaped much of Canada’s built environment – leaving an imprint for how we continue to experience place today. "Classicism in Canada" brings together essays by planning, architectural, art, political, and social historians. Drawing on primary sources and the physical sites themselves, the contributors probe the meaning of a style that melded the École des Beaux-Arts with the sensibilities of the City Beautiful movement and that was rooted in assumptions about order and historical continuity. The transformation of built space and land was motivated by pragmatism, aesthetics, and an ideological infrastructure that reverberated with utopian zeal as much as it was driven by racial discrimination and Indigenous erasure.

Résumé:
When it comes to architecture, Switzerland wields an international influence that belies its small geographic size. Such prominent figures as Herzog & de Meuron and Peter Zumthor lead a chorus of innovative new voices emanating from this mountainous nation where craftsmanship, simple beauty, and environmental sensitivity have always been prized values. "Swiss Made" presents the work of the celebrated studios and architects at the forefront of Swiss design, much of which has never been seen before in the United States. In his introduction, historian Steven Spier provides an overview of Swiss architecture and considers the cultural attitudes that have fostered such refined buildings. Critic Martin Tschantz assesses the Swiss tradition of integrating progressive design, indigenous building techniques, and advanced engineering systems. The photographs by Christian Richters are supplemented by drawings and plans of the many projects included in this volume. "Swiss Made" features the work of: Burkhalter & Sumi, Diener & Diener, Gigon & Guyer, Herzog & de Meuron, Peter Märkli, Peter Zumthor, and many others.

Résumé:
There is widespread consensus that we are living at the end—of democracy, of liberalism, of capitalism, of a healthy planet, of the Holocene, of civilization as we know it. In this book, drawing on radical futurisms and visions of justice-to-come emerging from the traditions of the oppressed—Indigenous, African-American, multispecies, anti-capitalist—as materialized in experimental visual cultural, new media, aesthetic practices, and social movements, T. J. Demos poses speculative questions about what comes after end-of-world narratives. He argues that it's as vital to defeat fatalistic nihilism as it is to defeat the false solutions of green capitalism and algorithmic governance. How might we decolonize the future, and cultivate an emancipated chronopolitics in relation to an undetermined not-yet? If we are to avoid climate emergency's cooptation by technofixes, and the defuturing of multitudes by xenophobic eco-fascism, Demos argues, we must cultivate visions of just futurity and multispecies flourishing.

Résumé:
The People's Republic of China is currently the largest market for architectural services in the world, and its cities — sites of the greatest economic migration in modern history — are rapidly being transformed into rival centers for global trade and commerce. "On the edge : ten architects from China" is a critical anthology on new architecture in China, the first book of its kind devoted to the development and maturation of an indigenous approach to modern architecture and urbanism in China. Focusing on the work of ten young design firms based in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, "On the edge" documents the rise of a new aesthetic, the evolution of contemporary architectural practice, and the irresistible, global aspirations of an emerging avant-garde.Included in the book are completed buildings, proposed projects, and urban master plans by Gary Chang of Edge HK, Rocco Yim, Zi and Ming Zhang of Original Design Studio, Li Hu of Open Architecture Studio, Ai We Wei, Qingyun Ma of MADA, Jiakun Liu, and Yung Ho Chang, who is the present dean of the Architecture School at MIT.

Résumé:
In 1664, England decided to invade the Dutch-controlled city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, had dreams of empire, and their archrivals, the Dutch, were in the way. But Richard Nicolls, the military officer who led the English flotilla bent on destruction, changed his strategy once he encountered Peter Stuyvesant, New Netherland’s canny director general. Bristling with vibrant characters, "Taking Manhattan" reveals the founding of New York to be an invention, the result of creative negotiations that would blend the multiethnic, capitalistic society of New Amsterdam with the power of the rising English empire. But the birth of what might be termed the first modern city is also a story of the brutal dispossession of Native Americans and of the roots of American slavery. The book draws from newly translated materials and illuminates neglected histories—of religious refugees, Indigenous tribes, and free and enslaved Africans. "Taking Manhattan" tells the riveting story of the birth of New York City as a center of capitalism and pluralism, a foundation from which America would rise.

The art in Qillaniq is multi-vocal, multi-disciplinary, and improvisational; it’s inspired by Indigenous values of contributing to community in as many ways as possible. It’s also an expression of radical joy, an exploration of what the artists tell us is possible in our communities, of holding space for the people who change our world – despite not always fitting into the norms of colonizing institutions. Most of all, it celebrates those who share love as an answer to difficulty. Qillaniq – that shimmering, bright light – honours the circumpolar world’s badass artists who tell us all that our existence is enough.

Résumé:
The iconic architecture of the brutalist modernist megastructure of Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada built by architect Arthur Erickson in the 1960s is the site of the artistic research project into the history of this "radical campus" and its built environment by Vancouver and Vienna based artists Sabine Bitter and Helmut Weber. The collaborative research group, "Guests and Hosts", formed by Bitter & Weber and Métis scholar June Scudeler including Métis scholar and student Treena Chambers, Kanien’kehá:ka Mohawk student Toni-Leah Yake, as well as Rachel Warwick and Hannah Campbell, has challenged the narrative of the radical campus, so called because it was informed by experimental concepts of learning and teaching. Using the spaces of a settler colonial institution, the project shifts perspectives by unsettling and challenging western- based concepts of pedagogy and knowledge. Combining archival photographic material, architectural photographs by the artists, and interventions into the institutional spaces by Guests and Hosts, the project performs the claim for places rather than spaces for Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.

Résumé:
A major contribution to both art history and Latin American studies, A Culture of Stone offers new insights into Inka culture and the interpretation of non-Western art. Carolyn Dean focuses on rock outcrops masterfully integrated into Inka architecture, exquisitely worked masonry, and freestanding sacred rocks, explaining how certain stones took on lives of their own and played a vital role in the unfolding of Inka history. Examining the multiple uses of stone, she argues that the Inka understood building in stone as a way of ordering the chaos of unordered nature, converting untamed spaces into domesticated places, and laying claim to new territories. Dean contends that understanding what the rocks signified requires seeing them as the Inka saw them: as potentially animate, sentient, and sacred. Through careful analysis of Inka stonework, colonial-period accounts of the Inka, and contemporary ethnographic and folkloric studies of indigenous Andean culture, Dean reconstructs the relationships between stonework and other aspects of Inka life, including imperial expansion, worship, and agriculture. She also scrutinizes meanings imposed on Inka stone by the colonial Spanish and, later, by tourism and the tourist industry.
