Some art is dismissed as "difficult"--difficult because of the media it employs, but even more so because of the sociopolitical themes it addresses. This art is often conceptual or performative, works cross-disciplinarily with architecture and design, and critically examines social parameters and the role of the media. Its media is naturally mixed, spanning and going beyond photography, film, video, and installation, all of which allow for process-oriented engagement. The Generali Foundation in Vienna has devoted much of its collection, exhibition energy, and research focus to this "difficult" type of artwork. Though many of the artists that form its collection are part of the canon of recent art history, they are mostly underrepresented in institutions--but not the Generali Foundation. Occupying Space presents a dense, comprehensive selection of projects from its collection by such artists as Valie Export, Andrea Fraser, Isa Genzken, Dan Graham, Hans Haacke, Hans Hollein, Mary Kelly, Gordon Matta-Clark, Adrian Piper, Martha Rosler, Allan Sekula, Peter Weibel, and Franz West, together with brief, articulate texts on their work.

Résumé:
"The Drawn Word" collects Ed Ruscha's work on paper, from his gunpowder drawings of the 60s and 70s through his more recent work from the 90s. Ruscha's treatment of language, of signs and words, has been extremely influential over the last 40 years. His delicate use of a variety of media, from gunpowder to pastel, makes his work on paper some of his most important. In them, he comments on our relationships with certain words, employing their visual impact, sound, and meaning, bringing all of these elements together via humor, among other tools. The work is distinctly American in its references to evocative places, like Hollywood, and in its bold, often mono-syllabic style of communication. Appropriately, the design of "The Drawn Word" evidences a conceptual relationship to the work, incorporating layout grids in reference to Ruscha's interest in commercial design, and phonetic translations of each of Ruscha's words to emphasize the importance of sound in their choosing.

Résumé:
Ydessa Hendeles is renowned not only as one of the foremost supporters of contemporary art but also as a curator and collector. The collection she has assembled under the auspices of the Ydessa Hendeles Art Foundation is one of the most original, prescient, and highly regarded contemporary art collections in the world - if one of the lesser known. Large parts of it are being shown for the first time in Haus der Kunst in Munich, assembled and arranged by Hendeles; this book has been conceptualized by her in conjunction with the exhibition. In typical Hendeles fashion, "Partners" combines artworks, press photos, anonymous snapshots, and everyday articles. Maurizio Cattelan's HIM, a depiction of Hitler on his knees, plays a key role, as does a large installation of thousands of historical snapshots of teddy bears.

Résumé:
The German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt, headquartered in Germany and Luxembourg, has significantly extended its collection of photographs in the last year, acquiring primarily large-format works by upcoming artists. Hence the necessity to produce "XL Photography 2", sequel to the two-year-old "XL Photography". This volume features photographers who employ an unparalleled range of modes of design and expression, spanning the rather classical black-and-white photographs of Nicholas Nixon and the cool color photographs of Stephen Shore, as well as the innovative One-Minute Sculptures of Erwin Wurm. Under the artistic guidance of Jean-Christophe Ammann, the photographic collection of the German Stock Exchange in Frankfurt places established artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, Sebastião Selgado, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Rineke Dijkstra, Roni Horn, and Jürgen Teller next to younger, as yet-undiscovered talents. This luxuriously designed, large-scale picture book represents all significant positions taken by photography in the past ten years.

Résumé:
This is the first comprehensive monograph on Balthasar Burkhard, the Swiss master of the sublime. A visual vocabulary of the world we live in, meditative and haunting, instilling peace and anxiety at the same time. This is a book about the beauty of nature - its force, silence, and eternal existence - and about cities - seen from above as they keep growing, threatening to suffocate us. Swiss photographer Balthasar Burkhard presents work from the last ten years, images from all over the world - from Japan to the USA, from South America to Africa and to the European Alps. The photographs are arranged in chapters that each focus on one aspect of the world - Desert, River, Skies, Cities, Landscapes. Together, they add up to a poetic atlas, a vision of the beauties and horrors of the world today. Intense black-and-white images that can only be created with a photo camera. A masterpiece of landscape and cityscape photography!
