Résumé:
Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Londres, Johannesbourg, Paris, Jérusalem, Mumbai, Lagos, Shanghai...

We all know the role of public parks in the health and vitality of a major city: they provide space for recreation, help reduce the impact of harmful greenhouse gas emissions, and absorb runoff from heavy thaws or storms. Parks also help make a city more equal: they provide greenery, amenities, and spaces to socialize to all people, regardless of income or status. But in a quickly intensifying city with soaring property values, Toronto is hard-pressed to create the parkland necessary to accommodate the needs of a growing population. Our contributors explore these themes in our 20-page cover section. You’ll also find engaging articles on the neurological reasons why we respond to certain architecture styles, how purpose-built apartments after World War I opened up independent city-living for women, where all of the building permits have been issued in the city over the last 20 years, why local comic artists are using Toronto as the setting in their stories, and how Mayor John Tory has made four horrible decisions that Torontonians will have to live with for generations.

"The Spiral Jetty Encyclo" draws on Smithson’s writings for encyclopedic entries that bring to light the context of the earthwork and Smithson’s many points of reference in creating it. Visitors and armchair travelers, too, will discover how much significance Smithson placed on regional considerations, his immersion in natural history, his passion for travel, and his ability to use diverse mediums to create a cohesive and lasting work of art. Containing some 220 images, most of them in color, with some historical black and whites, "The Spiral Jetty Encyclo" lets readers explore the construction, connections, and significance of Smithson’s 1,500-foot-long curl into Great Salt Lake, created, in Smithson’s words, of “mud, salt crystals, rocks, water.”

'Flâneuse [flanne-euhze], noun, from the French. Feminine form of flâneur [flanne-euhr], an idler, a dawdling observer, usually found in cities. That is an imaginary definition.' If the word flâneur conjures up visions of Baudelaire, boulevards and bohemia – then what exactly is a flâneuse? In this gloriously provocative and celebratory book, Lauren Elkin defines her as ‘a determined resourceful woman keenly attuned to the creative potential of the city, and the liberating possibilities of a good walk’. Part cultural meander, part memoir, Flâ neuse traces the relationship between the city and creativity through a journey that begins in New York and moves us to Paris, via Venice, Tokyo and London, exploring along the way the paths taken by the flâneuses who have lived and walked in those cities. From nineteenth-century novelist George Sand to artist Sophie Calle, from war correspondent Martha Gellhorn to film-maker Agnes Varda, Flâneuse considers what is at stake when a certain kind of light-footed woman encounters the city and changes her life, one step at a time.

Résumé:
This first comprehensive architectural guide on Dessau-Roßlau and Wörlitz, compiled by the Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau and the Kulturstiftung DessauWörlitz, presents an expert overview of more than 120 buildings and rural expanses with great care and attention given to detail. A multifaceted overall picture arises of a region which not only draws on its rich cultural and historic heritage, but also plans for the future and ventures out into new terrain. In the shape of the Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz and the Bauhaus ensemble, the city of Dessau-Roßlau and its environs encompass two UNESCO World Heritage sites. These encompass architectural subjects and expanses, both urban and rural, which invite much attention beyond the region itself and have had a lasting impact on the international stage. Beyond this, however, there are a whole host of notable historic and contemporary buildings in Dessau and its surroundings. As the residence of the princes and dukes of Anhalt in the age of Enlightenment and a centre of intellectual and cultural expansion at European level, the city developed into a significant industrial location as of the second half of the nineteenth century. Today, Dessau’s architectural profile is marked by contrasts: alongside restored historic buildings and standard socialist dwellings, there are also experimental refurbishment projects and ambitious new developments to be found.

One of the most prominent and prolific designers and architects of the late twentieth century, Michael Graves is best known for his popular product designs, including the world-famous Alessi whistling-bird teakettle, and controversial buildings, such as the Portland Building in Oregon, Humana Building in Kentucky, and Dolphin and Swan Hotels at Walt Disney World, Florida. Graves was widely seen as the leading voice of postmodernist architecture, which reintroduced human scale, color, and, sometimes, playful forms into the stark white vocabulary of modernism.
