(from "Branding from A to Z") We live in a world of brands. Brands play a crucial role in business competition but have also become an important social phenomenon. Berlin was once the biggest industrial area in Europe, home to large-scale enterprises like AEG and Siemens. Bewag, the Berlin electricity provider, laid the foundations for a modern power supply together with these companies. Power Stations in Berlin considers numerous local power stations as an integral part of the city's architectural heritage, from the period of industrialization at the beginning of the 20th century until now, giving a comprehensive overview of Berlin as an industrial city in the process. The question of how to reuse these unique plants, is raised; the right balance between preserving the facilities and finding a new economic use for them is crucial. The book includes essays by Klaus Bürgel, Hilmar Bärthel, Hans-Achim Grube, Christina Keseberg, Matthias Dunger, Herbert Strobel, Jörg Haspel, and Hubert Staroste

Résumé:
"Buildings that Last" provides the layperson with a basis for participating in the discussion about sustainable housing. This book is not about bricks and adobe, nor about cladding with aluminum or glass, nor about the difference between natural and mechanical ventilation. While these are all important aspects of sustainable building, the real key is for the partners in the construction process--including the commissioning bodies--to consider early on the physical, social, and cultural environment in which they want to be accommodated. This first thinking stage can lead to the unearthing of surprising solutions that are considerably more sustainable than what has been the norm until now. Real estate is still too often thought of as a question of meeting the demand for floor space in square meters (or feet, depending)--and little else. Buildings that Last includes examples of studies into the construction of offices for 2040, when buildings will hopefully have an environmental impact that is 95% less than was the norm at the end of the last century. Today's top-scoring projects are also reviewed--the results show that we still have a long way to go in sustaining sustainable development.

Résumé:
This book examines forty projects representing the exemplary work of the internationally renowned architecture firm KSP Engel and Zimmermann. In the course of the past several years, KSP Engel and Zimmermann has become one of the most successful architecture firms in Germany. The firm now has offices in Berlin, Braunschweig, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Munich. Its projects include office buildings, hospitals, schools, libraries, sports facilities and residential architecture. KSP Engel and Zimmermann's rich architectural language covers a broad spectrum-from sensitive intervention in existing structures to striking high-rise buildings. This book features an interview in which the two architects clarify their approach to architecture, their curiosity about building abroad, and their recent success. Essays by Peter Davey, editor-in-chief of Architectural Review, and Ingeborg Flagge, director of the Deutsches Architektur Museum, provide a portrait of these self-assured yet open-minded and highly pragmatic architects. The book illustrates the firm's architectural and planning competence in a presentation of forty different projects, including the Federal Press Office in Berlin, the Trade Fair Forum in Frankfurt, Volkswagen Hall in Braunschweig, the Bertelsmann Foundation building in Gütersloh, and a number of high-rise projects in Frankfurt.

Over 20 years ago, architect Renzo Piano established his firm and dubbed it the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW)--a name that recalls the art studios of the Renaissance, where the master artist worked closely and actively with his apprentices. Students have always been an active component of the Building Workshop, functioning in a team with experienced architects and other experts, contributing to an international array of projects from two studio bases: one in Paris and one in Genoa, Italy. This small, intimate publication presents essays on both the Building Workshop and Piano himself, together with photographs of the two studios and of completed RPBW structures.

Résumé:
When the property to the south of Rudolph M. Schindler’s historic house and studio on Kings Road in Los Angeles was sold to the developer of a 3-story, 18-unit condominium complex, a question urgently emerged: How does one build next to the Schindler House? To incite the exchange of ideas on the Schindler House problem, the MAK Center at the Schindler House initiated an architectural invitational in which architects were asked to envision a companion to Schindler’s masterwork. Juried by a distinguished international panel, entries were solicited from a roster of both established and young architects. Proposals were contributed by architect teams COOP HIMMEL(B)LAU, Vienna, Christophe Cornubert, PUSH, Los Angeles, Eichinger oder Knechtl, Vienna, Peter Eisenman, New York, Andrea Lenardin-Madden, Los Angeles, Durfee/Regn, Los Angeles, Günther Domenig, Graz, Eric Owen Moss, Los Angeles, Dominique Perrault, Paris, Odile Decq + Benoît Cornette, Paris, Zaha Hadid, London, Georg Driendl, Vienna, Michael Rotondi, Los Angeles, Klaus Stattmann, Vienna, Sandrine von Klot, Vienna, Lebbeus Woods, New York, Bernhard Sommer, Vienna, Mark Mack, Los Angeles, Umbrella Organization, Los Angeles, and The Next Enterprise, Vienna. "Architectural Resistance: Contemporary Architects Face Schindler Today" presents each of their 20 proposals in the context of a discussion about architecture, urban change, site, and historic preservation.

Résumé:
Europan 2003 is a call for ideas to revitalize suburban life in Europe. With 68 sites across the continent to choose from, the design theme this time round is 'Suburban challenge, urban intensity and housing diversity'. Transforming the post-war growth areas into enduring urban districts with a diversity of house types and up-to-date amenities is an issue of great relevance in Europe today. Over 280 projects were submitted for the Dutch sites by young architects from the Netherlands and beyond. The winning designs will be announced at the end of January 2004 during a special event at the Netherlands Architecture Institute when an exhibition of all the submitted plans will be opened. The book "Europan 7: Suburban challenge, urban intensity and housing diversity" gives an overview of the prizewinners, exhaustively documenting their design proposals with model photographs, plans and conceptual sketches. Interviews with the designers shed further light on the projects. The project section of the book also includes an essay on the central theme of urban intensity, a description of the four Dutch sites and an analysis of the entries from a European perspective.
