Futura and its typographic offspring have been the face of presidential campaigns from Richard Nixon to Hillary Clinton. Indeed, Futura is one of the most used fonts in the world today the typeface of modern design more so even than Helvetica. This fascinating book explores the cultural history and uses of a face that's so common you might not notice, until you start looking, and then you can't escape it. Douglas Thomas traces Futura from its Bauhaus-inspired origin in Paul Renner's 1924 design, to its current role as the go-to choice for corporate work, logos, motion pictures, and advertisements.

In more than fifty smart and accessible short pieces from the past decade, Bierut engages with a fascinating and diverse array of subjects. Essays range across design history, practice, and process; urban design and architecture; design hoaxes; pop culture; Hydrox cookies, Peggy Noonan, baseball, The Sopranos; and an inside look at his experience creating the "forward" logo for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. Other writings celebrate such legendary figures as Jerry della Femina, Alan Fletcher, Charley Harper, and his own mentor, Massimo Vignelli. Bierut's longtime work in the trenches of graphic design informs everything he writes, lending depth, insight, and humor to this important and engrossing collection.

Résumé:
This intimate portrait of eight houses by the Maine architect Carol A. Wilson illustrates how "local" is an idea as close to architecture as it is to food. Focusing on climate, seasons, views, local materials, the ecological history of building sites, and collaborations with local artisans, Wilson crafts exquisitely designed and built houses that celebrate the beauty of New England and the power of architecture to combine modern forms with a traditional built landscape. Following introductory texts by Enrico Pinna and Juhani Pallasmaa, and a conversation between Wilson and John Leroux, each project opens with a foldout of plans---transitioning from hand-drawn to computer-aided---and information about the house, before culminating in a selection of exterior, interior, and detail photographs. The book closes with an interview in twenty questions that elaborates on Wilson's working principles and the history of her studio for the past thirty years.

Résumé:
Between 1949 and 1989, remarkable buildings of late modernity were constructed in the coastal city of Kuwait. Within these four decades, the city state on the Arabian Gulf was comprehensively restructured and practically redesigned. Following a first volume with 150 carefully selected exemplary buildings, this second volume features interviews, essays and arguments, as well as transcripts of contemporary publications of these years. The texts by local and international scholars focus on questions regarding the significance and function of the buildings along with the role of individual and corporate protagonists that influenced, defined and created this highly dynamic restructuring process. Furthermore, all aspects are integrated into a wider regional and international context. The contributions are complemented by an array of photographic, layout, and archive materials.

Résumé:
Each year the Wouter Mikmak Foundation invites a designer to lecture for the series ‘Designers of the Future’. This publication presents that of the Tokyo-based office Atelier Bow-Wow, founded in 1992 by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima. Their vision calls for a shift in architectural design from individuality based to commonality based, through the notion of architectural ‘behaviorology’. Behaviour in this sense is an inclusive term that not only denotes human practice, but also a building’s behaviour as material typology, as well as phenomena produced by natural elements like light, air, heat, and water. An architecture based on commonalities is key to their discussion.
