Résumé:
The most complete monograph dedicated to the work of Michael Maltzan and his Los Angeles-based architecture practice, this book presents 16 of Maltzan’s most recent projects with full-color photographs, drawings, and plans. Maltzan is an architect who deals with the realities of urban landscape through the manipulation of ground, circulation, and perception. Among his best-known projects is MoMA QNS, Maltzan’s reworking of a former factory into a temporary accommodation for the Museum of Modern Art, which opened in Queens, New York, in June 2002. Projects currently in design or under construction include several innovative residences in California, the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, and Kidspace Children’s Museum, Pasadena, which was selected for the 2002 Venice Biennale International Exhibition of Architecture. Edited by Raymund Ryan with essays by Ai Weiwei and Mirko Zardini and a foreword by Richard Armstrong.

Résumé:
In an age of unprecedented human impact on the planet, certain countries stand out for their privileged positions and the complexity of their relationships with nature. Today, Canada's environmental record is among the poorest when compared to other wealthy nations, a fact that suggests ambivalence, and the actions of competing interests, which are most often exposed in moments of disorder and disregard for the unexpected consequences of managing the country's seemingly endless bounty. The 15 case studies presented here reframe Canada since 1945, and these surprising events are grounded in conversations about cultural myths and the legal environment, changing ideas of natural resources and environmental risk, indigenous engagement with environmentalism and development, and the impacts of the environmentalist movement.

Actions: What You Can Do With the City presents original research and writing that explores how the design and experience of contemporary cities can be shaped by human actions. Published in conjunction with the 2008 CCA exhibition of the same name, the publication features 30 original essays. International in scope, the essays include personal observations by a range of activists as well as scholarly reflections on the positive impact these individual initiatives have on the city. The series of texts is interspersed with a selection of 34 specific actions drawn from the exhibition. The actions are represented by colour images with short descriptions highlighting the actors, tools, and locations involved. Introductory essays by the editors and exhibition co-curators Mirko Zardini and Giovanna Borasi give historical perspective and establish the curatorial framework for the exhibition and publication.

Résumé:
Canada's foremost architectural office Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, founded in 1987 in Toronto, is one of most innovative architectural offices in North America today. They have made a name for themselves both for their integrated design process embodying collaboration with experts, clients and future users as well as the diversity of aesthetically refined and finely detailed designs. The work ranges from cultural institutions such as the Toronto International Film Festival and Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis to ecologically innovative concepts such as Manitoba Hydro Place in Winnipeg. A respectful approach toward the integration of heritage buildings is also a characteristic feature, illustrated by the designs for the Royal Conservatory and the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. Finally, educational and research facilities are a strong focus in KPMB's work, exemplified by campus projects in in Waterloo, Toronto, and Montréal, as well as future projects for the MIT and Princeton.

Résumé:
In No More Play: Conversations on Urban Speculation in Los Angeles and Beyond , American architect Michael Maltzan traces the transformations that have taken place in the city of Los Angeles since the early 1990s. Through a series of conversations with the city's leading artists and intellectuals, Maltzan explores such issues as real-estate speculation and future urban development, infrastructure, resources, site density, urban experience, political structure, commerce and community, attempting to transform our understanding of how each affects present-day Los Angeles. Intended to facilitate further dialogue on how to define the “City of Angels” at a moment when its identity is in significant flux, the book includes contributions by Iwan Baan, Catherine Opie, Sarah Whiting, Charles Waldheim, Matthew Coolidge, Geoff Manaugh, Mirko Zardini, Edward Soja, James Flanigan, Charles Jencks and Qingyun Ma.
