Résumé:
Cornelia Brierly was one of the first apprentices to attend Frank Lloyd Wright's school of architecture. Before long, she was a working colleague of the master architect; during the last thirty years of his career, she made important design contributions to many of his building projects. Brierly has spent most of her life at Wright's Taliesin (Wisconsin) and Taliesin West (Arizona). This illustrated memoir tells the story of nearly seventy years spent with the Taliesin Fellowship. It is an important work, not only because of the author's closeness to the twentieth century's foremost architect but because she has observed at first hand the unfolding of organic architecture -- Wright's design precepts made manifest. In an affectionate, honest, and preceptive book, she celebrates the fellowship as a way of life and brings to life a vibrant community that is still going strong, forty years after Wright's death.

Résumé:
Harrie Thomas Lindeberg (1879-1959) was one of America's most prominent 20th century domestic architects. He designed refined country houses throughout the United States for an elite clientele, and his name became synonymous with the rich man's country estate. Royal Cortissoz, in his introduction, cited Lindeberg's distinctive artistic personality as a key to his success and put him on a par with Charles McKim, Charles Platt, Henry Bacon, Stanford White, and John Russell Pope. Lindeberg was one of a large group of American architects who trained in the offices of McKim, Mead and White. Born in New Jersey, he served as an assistant to Stanford White on prestigious domestic commissions prior to White's death in 1906. Shortly thereafter he formed a partnership with his colleague Lewis Colt Albro and quickly became a sought-after designer of rustic country houses for the elite of American society. His style was urbane, refined and elegant, yet was always touched with a hint of idiosyncratic wit, much like that of his English contemporary Edwin Lutyens. His 1940 monograph is a rare and beautiful example of the folio retrospectives that chronicled the careers of leading domestic architects of the early 20th century. Virtually all of his major commissions are represented in large-format photographs and plans.

Résumé:
"New Living” (Das Neue Wohnen) was the title of an exceptional architectural propaganda film created in 1930 by German avant-garde artist and filmmaker Hans Richter. It show-cased exemplary modernist buildings and furniture – some of which were on view shortly afterwards in the prestigious exhibitions "The International Style” – and contrasted them with impractical, unhygienic living spaces. The visual diversity of "New Living”, and its use of an experimental montage technique, pioneered a radical new method of portraying architecture on celluloid. This publication includes detailed sequences from the New Living film, as well as numerous documents that illustrate the new style of architectural modernism. Previously priced at $96.00.

Résumé:
By any measure, Lebbeus Woods is one of the most original architects working today. His body of theoretical work focuses on buildings of crisis, whether marred by major earthquakes, suffering the effects of economic embargo, or damaged by war. Since the destruction of the World Trade Center, his designs have taken on new meaning and significance. In The Storm and the Fall, Woods brings his visions to a new depth, moving them from feverishly rendered drawings to three-dimensional space. The book focuses on two recent Woods installations - one at the Houghton Gallery at New York’s Cooper Union, the other at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris.

Résumé:
Charles and Henry Greene created the definitive houses of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. Raised to be architects, the Greene brothers were educated together at MIT, where their natural artistic skills blossomed in concert with an excellent practical education. While they practised architecture jointly in Southern California from 1906 to 1922 they achieved a powerful symbiosis, resulting in some of the most beautifully crafted houses in America. The elegant works of their peak period, such as the Gamble, Blacker and Thorsen houses, are masterful in their design and execution. No detail was overlooked: every element of the interior, including furniture, fittings and glasswork, as well as the building structure (down to pegs, air-vents and bracing) was conceived as an organic whole, and finished exquisitely. No hint of conflict was ever recorded between the gentlemanly brothers, yet their intertwined professional lives ultimately diverged into a physical separation and distinct design vocabularies. Even so, the automatic bond between the brothers was never completely severed, and they continued to consult each other on projects for the rest of their lives. This critical monograph, which charts the brothers’ careers (together and apart), is illustrated with superb new photography and draws on a wealth of previously unpublished archival material.

Résumé:
Architectural drawings are charged with responsibility. They have a legal and contractual status, an educational function, command the act of construction and direct the work involved in constructing the building: drawings have a reason for being in the world that goes beyond their own limits. What happens when the drawing is freed from these responsibilities? What idea of architecture might emerge from drawings that can speak other languages? What might architecture become if it were free to experiment with other concerns? The series of drawings by fala presented in this book seem to ask exactly that question. They are drawings made after the fact. After construction, they are freed from the external responsibility of persuading or instructing; they have no duty to convince about anything that might exist beyond themselves. This is the opposite of the traditional linear process of sketch > drawing > construction. Here, the building acts as a preliminary sketch to the drawing.
