Résumé:
In retracing the Viaggio photographic archive in Italy, a collection of 220 photographs from a 1984 project organised by pioneering contemporary photographer Luigi Ghirri, Nicola Nunziata presents a multi-layered book that considers the notion of landscape. Rereading the original images in terms of individual and shared experience, memory, and aesthetics, he investigates their substance formats, materials, surface textures, colours, marks and traces, signatures of the authors in order to divulge the singular details that express the history they hold, and thereby reflect upon the sense of transformation on a global scale in the period when they came into being.

Various series of images document his research in this book. They include Viaggio in Italia, from the 1980s, a project directed by Luigi Ghirri; China (Far East), which looks at the big changes on the Asian continent; and Site Specific, a sequence of shots taken from a helicopter flying above the world’s major cities, which made him internationally renowned. The book retraces Barbieri’s themes and exploration, underscoring his constant attention to the idea of perception and his ability to envision and interpret reality. He casts quite some doubt over the conventional modes of representation through photography.

This oublication is an enchanting collection of colour and black-and-white photographs taken in and around Cesare Fabbri’s native Emilia-Romagna and Sardinia between 2005–2015. Under Fabbri’s lens we encounter a silent world roused from its slumber, where objects are animated and personified. Fabbri nods to the photographic practice of Luigi Ghirri, bringing to mind the Italian master’s words: “the camera is a magical toy capable of bringing together the great and the small, illusion and reality, our adult awareness and the fairy-tale world of childhood.” Indeed, in 'The Flying Carpet', we encounter scenes that might derive from comics – a rural hut with painted questioning eyes, a plant uprooted and hovering mid-air, and an embroidered carpet lifting up in the breeze.
