Résumé:
Eikoh Hosoe's Kamaitachi, a classic and groundbreaking body of work, was originally released in 1969 as a limited-edition photobook of one thousand copies. A unique collaboration between photographer Eikoh Hosoe and Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of ankoku butoh dance, the work documents their visit to a farming village in northern Japan and the improvisational performance that resulted, made with the participation of local villagers and inspired by the legend of kamaitachi, a weasel-like demon who haunts the rice fields and slashes those he encounters with a sickle. In 2005, in close consultation with the artist, Aperture released a limited-edition facsimile in homage to the original. This 2009 edition now includes four never-before-published images from the classic Kamaitachi series and a new text by Japanese scholar Donald Keene, as well as essays by Eikoh Hosoe and Suzo Takiguchi. This edition was painstakingly reworked by graphic artist Ikko Tanaka, designer of the original volume, shortly before his death.

Résumé:
No photographer during architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s lifetime was granted as much personal and professional access as his official photographer, Pedro E. Guerrero, who spent 20 years shooting Wright’s work, his homes and many key moments in his life. Picturing Wright: An Album from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Photographer provides an illuminating portrait of Wright from the day of Guerrero’s serendipitous hiring in 1939 until his last assignment just before the architect’s 1959 death, a particularly momentous time in Wright’s career. Guerrero captured Wright at Taliesin West in Arizona, at Taliesin in Wisconsin and later at “Taliesin East”—his personally remodeled suite at New York’s Plaza Hotel. Guerrero was there as the Arizona site evolved from a makeshift camp to an internationally renowned architectural community; for the Taliesin Fellowship’s treks east to Taliesin each spring; and for life among the apprentice architects who created buildings, grew their own food, picnicked on the hillsides and thrived under the master’s watchful but benevolent eye.

Résumé:
Published to accompany the first large-scale retrospective of Alighiero Boetti's work outside Italy in over a decade, this volume covers all periods of Boetti's broad oeuvre, including early sculptural experiments associated with the Arte Povera movement, conceptual and ephemeral projects of the 1970s and the monumental embroideries and tapestries he fabricated up to his death. This illustrated catalogue is structured as a typology of the artist's body of work rather than a chronological progression. Essays by curators from the Reina Sofia, Madrid, the Tate Modern, London and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, address recurrent themes in Boetti's work such as travel and geography, time, order and disorder and singularity and multitude, while contributions by scholars examine his early influences and his relationship to the cultural, political, and social spheres of Italy and Afghanistan in the 1970s and 1980s. This volume celebrates the material diversity, conceptual complexity and visual beauty of Boetti's work, proving that he is one of the most important and influential artists of his generation.

Résumé:
An isolated institute laid out in a Fibonacci sequence, hidden deep in the forest. Twenty-four labs. Twenty-four researchers. Until one of them disappears . . . When physicist Stéphane Douasy arrives to occupy the vacant twenty-fourth lab at the Institute for the Study of Complex and Dynamic Systems, an ominous problem rises in his wake: what has happened to his missing neighbor in Building F? When Stéphane’s neighbors, a discouraged linguist and a computer scientist bent on predicting the future, discover that the missing researcher may have solved the P versus NP problem—a coup in computer science with revolutionary implications for everything from mathematics to philosophy—before vanishing, things turn stranger still, and even more menacing. Solving the mystery of the Institute and its devolution into mayhem and violence every seventh year quickly shifts from being an intellectual exercise to a matter of life and death. ''The phantom scientist'' is part thriller, part mystery, part systems theory—and all enthralling. The tale slyly draws together linguistics, biology, astrophysics, and robotics in a mind-bending puzzle that will thrill and inform readers.

Résumé:
The decades from 1500 to 1550 in Florence encompassed one of the most original and outstanding periods in the entire history of art. This gloriously illustrated book gathers and describes many of the beloved paintings, drawings, and sculptures created by the greatest masters of the period along with less familiar but equally beautiful and intriguing works. The contributors to the volume explore the masterpieces of Florence and challenge conventional interpretations of the evolution of this art. The book outlines the historical context of the Florentine High Renaissance and then discusses drawings, paintings, and sculpture in turn. Focusing on major artists and their contemporaries and allies, the authors demonstrate the great importance of drawing during this period and show that there was a consistency in the brand of creativity found in such artists as Michelangelo, Fiorentino, Cellini, and Bronzino. The authors question the relevance of terms like High Renaissance and Mannerism, and they contend that, contrary to commonly held assumptions, there was no strong stylistic division between art produced in Florence before and after the death of Raphael in 1520.

Résumé:
The second volume tracing the history of Britain's most famous cinema circuit continues the story from 1942 when J. Arthur Rank took control after the death of its founder, Oscar Deutsch. Odeon expanded rapidly and was eventually merged with Rank's other circuit, Gaumont cinemas, as part of The Rank Organisation. The book shows in great detail how Odeon adapted to the wide screen and roadshow eras, built new cinemas and converted existing ones to two and three screens, but went into a sharp decline until the turnaround in cinemaattendances from 1985, fuelled by the arrival of American-style multiplex.By entering the race to build multiplexes and further subdividing its older sites, Odeon reasserted itself to become the largest chain in the UK. The book is copiously illustrated with 16 pages in colour and includes a list of the films given an Odeon circuit release from 1942 to 1959 and a complete record of all the cinemas ever operated by Odeon until it was sold by Rank in 2000.

Cemeteries are virtual encyclopaedias of symbolism. Engravings on tombstones, mausoleums and memorials tell us just about everything there is to know about a person- date of birth and death as well as religion, ethnicity, occupation, community interests, and much more. In the fascinating new book "Stories in Stone: A Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism and Iconography" by noted author Douglas Keister, the secrets of cemetery symbolism are finally revealed. "Stories in Stone" provides history along with images of a wide variety of common and not-so-common cemetery symbols, and offers an in-depth examination of stone relics and the personal and intimate details they display - flora and fauna, religious icons, society symbols, and final impressions of how the deceased wished to be remembered. Douglas Keister has created a practical field guide that is compact and portable, perfect for those interested in family histories and genealogical research, and is the only book of its kind that unlocks the language of symbols in a comprehensive and easy-to-understand manner.

Résumé:
The Utopie group was born in 1966 at Henri Lefebvre's house in the Pyrenees. The eponymous journal edited by Hubert Tonka brought together sociologists Jean Baudrillard, René Lourau, and Catherine Cot, architects Jean Aubert, Jean-Paul Jungmann, Antoine Stinco, and landscape architect Isabelle Auricoste. Over the next decade, both in theory and in practice, the group articulated a radical ultra-leftist critique of architecture, urbanism, and everyday life. "Utopia deferred" collects all of the essays Jean Baudrillard published in Utopie as well as recent interviews with Jean Baudrillard and Hubert Tonka. Utopie served as a workshop for Baudrillard's thought. Many of the essays he first published in Utopie were seminal for some of his books: "For a critique of the political economy of the sign", "The mirror of production", "Simulations", "Symbolic exchange and death", and "In the shadow of the silent majorities". But Utopie was also a topical journal and a political one; the topics of these essays are often torn from the headlines of the tumultuous decade following the uprisings of May 1968.

Résumé:
Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), one of the most famous architects of all time, published two enormously popular guides to the churches and antiquities of Rome in 1554. Striving to be both scholarly and popular, Palladio invited his Renaissance readers to discover the charm of Rome's ancient and medieval wonders, and to follow pilgrimage routes leading from one church to the next. He also described ancient Roman rituals of birth, marriage, and death. Here translated into English and joined in a single volume for the first time, Palladio's guidebooks allow modern visitors to enjoy Rome exactly as their predecessors did 450 years ago. Like the originals, this new edition is pocket sized and therefore easily read on site. Enhanced with illustrations and commentary, the book also includes the first full English translation of Raphael's famous letter to Pope Leo X on the monuments of ancient Rome. For architectural historians, tourists, and armchair travellers, this book offers insights into the antiquarian and ecclesiastical preoccupations of one of the greatest of the Renaissance architectural masters.

Résumé:
In this collection of essays, Murray Bookchin's vision for an ecological society remains central as he addresses questions of urbanism and city planning, technology, self-management, energy, utopianism, and more. Throughout, he opposes efforts to reduce ecology to a toothless "environmentalism," a task as vital today as when these essays were first published. Written between 1969 and 1979, the essays in this collection represent a fascinating and fertile period in Bookchin’s life. Coming out of the unfulfilled promise of the sixties and trying to develop a revolutionary critique of social life that avoided the pitfalls of Marxism, he was entering his creative intellectual peak. He was laying the foundations of a truly social ecology: a society based on decentralization, interdependence, democratic self-management, mutual aid, and solidarity. Presented with clarity and fervor, these key works contain the kernels of concerns that would occupy him until his death in 2006. This edition also includes a new foreword by Dan Chodorkoff, someone who was with Bookchin at the founding of his Institute for Social Ecology and who understand his work better than anyone.
