Résumé:
Richard Serra’s hugely successful body of work consistently explores the possibilities of form and matter. Serra’s steel sculptures are held in major collections internationally, and his drawings assert themselves as abstract victories. Through the use of black paintstick—a combination of oil paint, wax, and pigment, to which he has used since 1971—Serra’s drawings convey a strong sense of optical weight, acutely similar to the physical presence of his sculptures. 2022, the artist’s largest single forged round to date, investigates properties of weight and scale.

Résumé:
This volume presents five important contemporary artists who work in the landscape and make use of the materials and processes of nature. While the artists showcased — herman de vries, Chris Drury, Nikolaus Lang, Richard Long, and Giuseppe Pennone — do not belong to a particular school, they are united by their empathy for the natural world and their decision to work outside the urban contexts of much modernist art. Profiles of each artist, based on specially commissioned interviews, and an essay placing their art in both historical and contemporary contexts accompany the illustrations.

Résumé:
The newly founded gallery Haunch of Venison inaugurates its opening with an exhibition by internationally acclaimed sculptor Rachel Whiteread. The exhibition and accompanying publication feature Whiteread's newest work, Untitled (Domestic), a massive sculpture cast from the fire escape staircases of Haunch of Venison's premises--a 3-storey building constructed in the late 18th century that was originally the home of Admiral Lord Nelson. Reincarnating the staircase in its negative form, the imposing white sculpture invokes the building's past while reflecting the artist's interest in the formal and purely architectural qualities of sculpture. This inaugural publication features installation views of the exhibition, including additional work dating from 1995 to the present day, as well as two amply illustrated essays and a complete bibliography. The first text considers Whiteread's immense public commissions in relation to their environment; the second outlines the history and techniques involved in creating the cast staircase sculptures.

Résumé:
Volume number 10 in the Conversation Series with the influential museum director, curator, writer and conversationalist Hans Ulrich Obrist, is given over to an intensive talk with the important German conceptual artist, Thomas Demand, who constructs precise environments out of paper maquettes, which are then photographed to haunting effect. Topics include concepts and rules of operation, the reconstruction and reverberation of history, work processes, studio realities and significant exhibitions of recent years. This wide-ranging conversation, modestly illustrated with black-and-white images, is as intelligent as it is revealing, giving the reader an unprecedented glimpse into the minds of two of the most brilliant players on the international art scene. Demand lives between Berlin and New York, where a retrospective of his work was shown at The Museum of Modern Art in 2005. Hans Ulrich Obrist is the Co-Director of the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, as well as the Serpentine Gallery, London, where he lives and works.

Résumé:
"People make too much of architecture. I have a running quarrel with architects who overestimate architecture. Reality is at eye-level with people walking down the street." Born in 1923 in Budapest, Hungary, Yona Friedman is widely considered one of the greatest utopian visionary architects of the twentieth century. Currently based in Paris, he is just as much a sociologist as a designer of buildings, more concerned with the way people interact with their environments than monumental statements by an ego-centric creator. In this illuminating talk with The Conversation Series editor Hans Ulrich Obrist, he touches on the needs of the individual in heterogeneous urban societies, past and future projects, utopia, influences and metaphysics, revealing a wise and deeply-animated humanistic intellect. Known for his 1958 manifesto, L'Architecture mobile, Friedman's ideas have remained influential. His work was featured at the 2002 Documenta.

Résumé:
The Swedish painter Karin Mamma Andersson works with a highly idiosyncratic imagery, engendered by the mysteries of dreams, fairytales and everyday life. She paints with an indefatigable passion for storytelling, spreading the paint thickly with broad, sweeping gestures, or dryly and sparsely, across the canvas. Glimmering beauty and dark maelstroms of doom are sampled with elements from myths, films and dreams, the absurd and the realistic, in the same picture. Her early works feature children in vast landscapes, echoing her own childhood in northern Sweden. The figures are set, each separately, in forests, by lakes, in the countryside. This rural setting later gives way to the interiors of the art world – cluttered framers’ workshops, libraries and elegant salons with finely ornamented objects. More recently, these rooms have opened up towards new worlds, where dream and reality seem to be careening. Whatever motifs she paints, the atmosphere appears to be fairly constant: a form of serenity in between finding and forgetting. The titles underline the ambiguity, explaining nothing but running parallel with the paintings.

Résumé:
In making light his primary medium, Dan Flavin (1933–1996) established himself as one of the most innovative and significant artists of the minimalist movement. A new generation encountered Flavin’s work through the critically acclaimed exhibition "Dan Flavin : a retrospective", which opened in October 2004 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. "Dan Flavin : new light" includes essays that respond to this exhibition and to the renewed interest in Flavin’s work and its place in 20th-century art. In this volume, six leading scholars of contemporary art consider the ambiguities and multiple resonances of Flavin’s light works. Each addresses the ontological complexity of the work –object-based, yet "situational", and painterly in its deployment of colored light – within the insistently sculptural world of minimalism. The book’s contributors interpret this tension by exploring Flavin’s early assemblages, the relationship of drawing to his installation practice, the specificity of his materials and their operation in actual space, and the openly ambivalent place of Flavin’s work within the history of late modernism.

Résumé:
"Keep moving" is an artist’s book by Hamish Fulton, the British "walking artist." At the core of Fulton’s practice are the experiences he accumulates during his perambulations, which he records in photographs, pictograms, and texts. The exploration of self and the encounter with nature become one and the same. "Keep moving" resulted from a period of time the artist spent in the Corvara region of the Dolomites in the summer of 2004, during which he went on eight day-long walks and a guided climb, using a small mountain hut as his base. Contributing an essay here is legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner, with whom Fulton hiked the imagined trail followed by Ötzi the Iceman, whose 5,000-year-old skeleton was recently discovered in the South Tyrol.

Résumé:
The art in the Detroit People Mover stations is a world-class collection with a uniquely Detroit sensibility. When the People Mover, Detroit's elevated transit system, was being planned, the stations were designed simply to serve as basic points of entry and departure, but in 1984 Irene Walt and the Downtown Detroit People Mover Art Commission, a volunteer committee also known as Art in the Stations, undertook the task of incorporating major works by contemporary American artists into the thirteen People Mover stations. As a result Detroit now has one of the most impressive collections of public art in the country. With lush photographs by Balthazar Korab and accompanying narrative, Art in the Stations examines each of the gorgeous works that grace the People Mover stations. A stunning guide through the city's People Mover art installations, Art in the Stations documents Detroit's rich culture and testifies to the perseverance and hard work that made the display of this art possible.
