Résumé:
Taiwan is densely populated along the island's perimeter and largely covered with steep, rugged mountain ranges spanning from north to south. Strong ties exist between the authorities, academics, developers, building professions, and citizens, and despite its volatile political and challenging economic situations, the administering of public works and commissioning of various commercial projects has maintained its creativity and rationality. Through first-hand experience the magazine explores more than 20 projects borne out of the unique conditions on Taiwan, among them works by Mecanoo, Jun Aoki, Jay Chiu, OMA, Casagrande Laboratory, Fieldoffice Architects, and others.

This special issue on architect and urban designer Arata Isozaki has four unique features that are usually absent in conventional overviews of his work. Firstly, only projects by Isozaki from the 1970s are included; secondly, it features working drawings rather than design drawings; thirdly, just four works were selected for inclusion; and finally, particular emphasis was made in the interview with the architect to elicit his own remarks on topics pertaining to the 1970s, theory and practice, and what was experimental about specific buildings. The chosen works are the Oita Medical Hall Extension, Kitakyushu Central Library, West Japan General Exhibition Centre, and Kaijima House.

Résumé:
Behind every element and subassembly of elements that an architect inserts into a drawing or model of a project there is, implicitly, a supply chain resulting in the delivery and placement of these parts on the construction site. Traditional architectural drawings and CAD models abstract away from that supply chain, but BIM (Building Information Modelling) databases make it explicit, designable, and manageable. This in turn is opening up new ways to think about designing and producing buildings and – as we are beginning to see – new formal and functional possibilities. A+U takes a comprehensive look at the use and applications of BIM in architectural practice – aspects of design, fabrication, simulation, and the short term influence of BIM on architecture are discussed and accompanied by plans, models and photographs. Contributors include: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Stanford Institute of Design, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Kohn Pederson Fox Associates, Neoscope, Ingenhoven Architects and RTKL Associates.

The May 2016 issue of a+u is a special issue dedicated to recent works by BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group. The team is engaged with projects both large and small in locations all over the world. The issue reflects that diversity, with the first half devoted to the large, urban-scale works for which the practice is best known, and the second half devoted to smaller works, including residences and a pavilion. Including those nearing completion, 20 of the 22 projects introduced here are currently underway. Over the next few years, we will see many more of their works finished.

Architect Lise Juel expresses how “Melancholy as a concept has been a useful perspective in understanding artists and artworks, but it remains underexposed in the field of architecture.” And yet, she continues, this is “not melancholic in its negative sense, but in the sense of a thoughtful and pensive approach to life.” Seventeen houses in Denmark are featured in this(...)

Résumé:
Architect Lise Juel expresses how “Melancholy as a concept has been a useful perspective in understanding artists and artworks, but it remains underexposed in the field of architecture.” And yet, she continues, this is “not melancholic in its negative sense, but in the sense of a thoughtful and pensive approach to life.” Seventeen houses in Denmark are featured in this issue, along with more than a dozen architectural offices that in turn reflect this melancholic perspective through their work, key to understanding Danish architectural practice, both traditionally and in the present. With work by Jeppe Utzon, LETH & GORI, Primus Architects, Atelier Lise Juel, and more.
