Scope and Content

This project, 1998-2000, documents the conception and design of Housings, mass-customized prefabricated residences, by the architecture firm KOL/MAC.

KOL/MAC began by digitally blending a typical 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom colonial house with a range of other objects or use cases. The result was six related houses that explored the relationship between customization and mass prefabrication. Housings relates to KOL/MAC’s exploration of what they call chimerical projects, where form and function are combined to create uniquely hybridized structures.

The project records are largely in CAD formats, including Alias Wire, Maya, and IGES files; there are a number of raster image formats, including TIF, Alias pix, Mac Pict images, and JPEG. The materials include renderings, wireframe drawings, and still images of the various Housings structures. There is also a body of material from and related to the concrete manufacturer, YTONG, as well as a small amount of video material, which is only partially accessible due to format obsolescence.

Physical Description

A number of file types were inaccessible at the time of processing. All these files have been preserved in hopes that they will be accessible in the future. See file-level description for more information.

Arrangement

This project is not arranged.

General note

  • During the rough sort, major directories and subdirectories of Housings material were collocated. Two files were not nested in directories at the time of arrangement and were moved into related folders: “Housings_Scripts_11.22.99” was moved into AP185.S1.001 and “YTONGBOOK” was moved into AP185.S1.004. Similar materials in related directories were grouped together. More specifically, the images and stills were brought together, as were the two groupings of YTong catalog material. The Mac pict image files and Quark XPress files are available on demand as TIFs and PDFs respectively. The Quark XPress files have varying degrees of fidelity to the originals.

    Description:

This directory contains images related to Housings. They are primarily various renderings of the Housing structures; some reflect the final product, while others show experimentation on the forms. Of interest, the Mac pict images tie the different Housing forms to various brands and products. Most common file formats: AppleDouble Resource Fork, Tagged Image File Format, Macintosh PICT Image, Silicon Graphics Image, Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES).

    Quantity / Object type:

    1 File

    Extent and Medium:

    • 149 digital files (778 MB)

    Physical Description:

The subdirectory titled "STILLShousesSites" appear to be Silicon Graphics color images; the subdirectory "housing_stills" appears to have related, possibly overlapping material in a more accessible format. It was not possible to open the IGES and Maya files at the time of processing.

    Arrangement:

A number of original directories were brought together to create this grouping. Within the main directory, two additional directories in "stills" were brought together because they seem to be related materials in different formats.
