Opening: The Lives of Documents—Photography as Project

Event, Paul-Desmarais Theatre and Shaughnessy House, 2 May 2023, 6pm to 9pm

Join us and curators Bas Princen and Stefano Graziani for the opening of the exhibition The Lives of Documents—Photography as Project.

As the inaugural show introducing a long-term investigation on photography, the CCA begins a renewed exploration of the medium that aims to put forward new methodological approaches to the study of photography and image-making practices as research tools.

This exhibition is an open reflection on how past and contemporary image-making practices serve as critical tools to read our built environment and design today’s world. How does one reconcile the author’s perception of reality within the photographic record? What is the life of photographs as visual arguments?

Through oral histories, commissioned artist books, installations, photographs, and more, the project dissects the practices of artists and photographers whose work has defined the thresholds of transformation of the discipline in the last fifty years.

Come explore the exhibition in CCA’s Main galleries, opening at 5pm. The conversation with the curators will begin at 6pm in the Paul-Desmarais Theatre, followed by an intimate performance by contributing artist Takashi Homma and a celebration in the Shaughnessy House.

The museum will be open, exceptionally, on this Tuesday evening from 5pm to 9pm.

Bas Princen is an artist and photographer trained in architecture and urbanism, exploring the status of the image by focusing on how photographs influence the ways in which space and landscapes are perceived, represented, and reproduced.

Stefano Graziani works at the crossroads of photography, art, and architecture, contributing an unconventional voice to contemporary artistic discourse.
