Dialogues on Documents: Unpacking the Photographic Process

Event, in English, Paul-Desmarais Theater, 30 April 2023, 2pm

The value of photography lies not only in the images it conceives, but also in its capacity as a research tool and as a forum for project-building that can live beyond the moment of capture. Through their research and practice, photographers produce and construct visual arguments that document encountered realities and deliberately intervene in the world.

How are these images selected and combined for a project? How does the format of display change the way an argument is understood by a viewer? How does photography reveal and express transformations in our built surroundings that traditional architectural tools cannot?

Ahead of the opening of Lives of Documents—Photography as Project, contributing artists to the show will speak about the ways their projects developed, expanded, and perhaps, remain ongoing. Join us for an afternoon of discussion with Takashi Homma, Gert Jan Kocken, Aglaia Konrad, Ari Marcopoulos, and Marianne Mueller , led by curators Bas Princen and Stefano Graziani.

2pm: Aglaia Konrad, Ari Marcopoulos

4pm: Marianne Mueller, Gert Jan Kocken, Takashi Homma

Takashi Homma is a fashion and “new documentary” photographer based in Tokyo, whose works are lifelong explorations of culture and the ephemeral.

Gert Jan Kocken, based in Amsterdam, creates juxtapositions of historical images and texts through his multi-faceted archival approach to photography.

Aglaia Konrad is an Austrian photographer and educator living in Brussels, probing the parameters that inform and underlie architecture and urbanism.

Ari Marcopoulos is a photographer and film artist based in New York City whose work depicts street life, communities, and urban subcultures of the city.

Marianne Mueller is a Swiss artist and professor recontextualizing observations of the environment through pseudo-encyclopedic photography books, videos, and installation.
