Project
AP056.S1.1988.PR09
Description:
This project series documents renovations and additions to the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto from 1988-1993. The office identified the project number as 18703. This project, known as Phase 3, built upon two other major expansion projects to the art gallery, Phase I and Phase II, that were completed by the architecture firm Parkin Architects Planners in the 1970s. Phase 3 was the winning entry for a limited competition won by KPMB, with Thomas Payne as partner-in-charge, in joint venture with the firm of Barton Myers Inc. This project consisted of 100,000 square feet of additions to the building including a prints and drawings study centre, a reference library and administrative offices in the southwest corner and new vaulted galleries, a tower and pyramidal arrival hall along Dundas Street. The Dundas Street elevation was transformed by these additions and brick facades were added. A new double height sculpture atrium, connected to the Victorian Grange mansion, was also added. This project also included 190,000 square feet of renovations to the existing building including changes to galleries, circulation, vaults, staff areas, the restaurant, bookstore and volunteer shop. The goal of these changes was to create a more coherent design between old and new parts of the building and to reinforce the role of art galleries in contemporary life by increasing the scale of the building and creating new spaces for interaction and participation. This project won the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence in 1988. The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and accompanying notes dating from 1986-1992. The drawings include site plans and surveys, sketches, plans, elevations, sections, perspectives, details, studies, axonometric drawings, furnishing and structural drawings and some presentation drawings.

Description:
File documents an unexecuted project for a multiple use building in Birmingham, England, for Shantasea Limited. Cedric Price resigned as the architect for the project and took on the role of architect for Birmingham and Midland Institute (BMI), one of the proposed tenants for the Shantasea project. The multi-functional centre was to include a theatre, TV studios, an audio-visual exhibition area, retail stores, offices, a meeting hall, a gallery, a seminar area, a library, and parking within an approx. 3,500,000 square-foot area. Drawings include sections showing preliminary circulation patterns, and design development drawings for seven alternate schemes, each with different total square footage. Volumetric studies compare functions and areas for each design. Diagrammatic plans and sections explore vertical and horizontal circulation patterns, alternate layouts for parking, and the relationship between areas of the building for BMI and those shared by BMI and other tenants. Material in this file was produced between 1967 and 1970. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, and textual records.

AP164.S1
Description:
This series documents the architectural projects of Ábalos&Herreros from 1986 to 2006 and represents over 150 projects, including exhibitions. The firm worked on a wide variety of projects from commercial and residential structures to libraries and sewage treatment plants. The firm's design process was research oriented and involved conversations between Ábalos and Herreros, office collaborators, artists who partook in the projects, as well as other architects. Several projects found in this series were developed in collaboration with other architects including: José Manuel Ábalos; Salvador Pérez Arroyo; Filippo Costi; Ángel Jaramillo Esteban; Javier Fresneda; Eduardo Horta; Martín Marciano; Ángel Jaramillo Sánchez; Renata Sentkiewicz; and Héctor Vigliecca. Most projects were designed for the city of Madrid and the Community of Madrid. Projects were also developed for other sites in Spain, including the Canary Islands, as well as for sites in Portugal, Germany, the United States, and Brazil. Ábalos & Herreros often created new projects from the firm's existing work. The firm also identified their projects numerically. These identification numbers are documented at the project series level for each project. Among the materials documenting the firm's projects are conceptual, design development, presentation, and working drawings, as well as panels. There are also several CAD drawings and prints of born digital drawings. Documenting the firms conceptual process are collages and photomontages. Photographic materials included in this series depict project sites and built projects. Also included are a variety of research reference materials, correspondence, project documentation, and project submissions. Although creating models was not a common practice for the firm, there are a few project series which include models.

AP018.S1.1979.PR11
Description:
This project series documents long-term planning for airports in Trinidad and Tobago from 1979-1993. The office identified the project number as 7911. This project consisted of the planning of two airports, one in Piarco and the other in Crown Point, financed by the Government of Canada acting as agents for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. This work was undertaken as a consortium with other Canadian firms who worked together on airport planning projects around the world. The firms consisted of Parkin Architects Planners as the architects, the Montreal Engineering Company Limited, Peat, Marwick and Partners, and IBI Group. At Crown Point, a new 3,300 square metre terminal building was proposed for domestic and some international traffic, as well as a new control tower. The passenger terminal could accommodate 350 enplaning and 350 deplaning passengers. This first phase was said to accommodate growth until 1993. At Piarco, a new 26,000 square foot passenger terminal was proposed, which was said to accommodate about 2/3 of traffic in 1993. This location also proposed a 200 room hotel be built in the future. This project is recorded through textual records dating from 1977-1981 which consist of correspondence between consortium members, billings, the joint venture agreement and financial analysis report.

Description:
The project series documents the competition entry and infrastructure development of the northeast coast park (Parque litoral nord-est, Barcelona Forum 2004, Sant Adrià de Besòs) and adjoining recycling plant (Edificio de oficinas y planta integral de RSU) in Santa Adriá de Besòs, Barcelona, Spain. The firm identified this project as number 133. The competition was organized by the Barcelona City Council and was part of a larger plan to develop new infrastructure for Barcelona, as the Host City for the International Forum of Cultures held in 2004. A number of architects and firms were involved in other projects related to the infrastructure plan, like the South East Coastal Park & Auditoriums by the Foreign Office Architects (See AP171.S1.2000.D6). The park included several other features, like the design of urban furniture (Pep and Xurret benches, and a fence), an artificial mountain, a youth hostel, a small security building and a pier. Only the park, the artificial mountain and the benches were built. The firm arranged work for this project with the following numbers: 133-1, 133-2, 133-6 to 133-8, and 133-10. The CCA did not receive materials classified under numbers 133-9 and 133-11. The recycling plant includes, among other things, office space, an ecomuseum, and a garden. Abalos and Herreros won the competition for design, construction and exploitation of the plant. The firm worked in collaboration with the firm Tersa, S.A. The firm assigned numbers 133-3 to 133-5 to identify this work. Documenting the project are design development and working drawings, correspondence, invoices, minutes, project descriptions, studies, budgets, contracts, reference, photographic and digital materials, and a videocassette.
