Project
AP018.S1.1980.PR11
Description:
This project series documents a feasibility study for the new National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario from 1980-1982. The office identified the project number as 8011. In 1977, Parkin Architects Planners won a limited architectural competition for their design of the new National Gallery of Canada. The selected site for the competition, next to the Ottawa River, was controversial due to its uneven ground and lack of access to main streets in Ottawa. This project consisted of a feasibility study to use the existing Memorial Buildings in Ottawa as the site of the new National Gallery of Canada. These buildings, originally built in 1954 as federal offices, were between 4-6 storeys with 70,000 square feet of space, excluding parking levels. The project is recorded through drawings, photographs and textual records dating from 1980-1982. The majority of the drawings are reprographic copies of building sections, floor plans and area calculations. The textual records include correspondence, conference reports, interoffice letters, financial records and the feasibility report and design scheme documentation.

Toronto International Airport, Terminal Two Parking Structures, Mississauga, Ontario (1974-1975)
AP018.S1.1974.PR19
Description:
This project series documents a parking structure for the Toronto International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario from 1974-1975. The office identified the project number as 7425. This project consisted of a five-level, above ground parking garage with a capacity of approximately 5000 vehicles. The parking structure was designed for Terminal Two at the airport (now known as Toronto Pearson International Airport) and would connect departing and arriving passengers from the airport to the structure via tunnels. Parkin Architect Planners were hired as the consulting architects for this project by Fenco-Barton Engineers. Fenco Barton was awarded with the Prestressed Concrete Institute Award in 1979 to for excellence in architectural and engineering design using precast and prestressed concrete. The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and textual records dating from 1974-1975. The drawings are mostly original sketches of the design. Photographs and negatives show research on other parking structures. The textual records consist of correspondence, conference reports, interoffice letters and project notes. Box AP018.S1.1974.PR19.009 contains an index to the textual records, which was created by the office

Project
AP207.S1.1968.PR02
Description:
This project series documents Pettena's installation entitled "Carabinieri". The installation consisted of sheets of corrugated cardboard and metal stays assembled to created the three-dimensional letters of the word "Carabinieri". The final product measured about ten meters long by two meters high. It was first built in the courtyard of the Palazzo Comunale in Novara in 1968. "The construction, left out in the open, gradually degraded due to the damp and rain" [1] which made it an installation project, as well as a performance. The installation was recreated for the exhibition "Gianni Pettena. About non conscious architecture" in the Galleria Giovanni Bonelli in Milan, in 2017. This project is the first of a series of three other similar projects. The project series contains photographs of the construction of the word "Carabinieri", photographs of the final installation at the Palazzo Comunale in Novara, and one photograph of the installation at the Gallerie Giovanni Bonelli. It also inlcudes drawings, a plan of the installation, and photographs of a later model of the cardboard word. Source: [1] Marco Scotini, editor. Non-conscious architecture: Gianni Pettena, Sternberg Press, 2018, 235 pages. p. 108.

Description:
This project series documents the design of the Victoria and Grey Trust Company office in Stratford, Ontario from 1980-1981. The office identified the project number as 8014. This project consisted of the design of an office building and computer center to be the new head office of Victoria and Grey Trust Company. Originally, two schemes were proposed, both with eleven storeys, but the project was eventually scaled back to five storeys with a basement and penthouse. The building was to be located on Erie Street. This project consisted only of the building's design; it was eventually constructed under a different project number assigned by the office, with changes to the design (see project series AP018.S1.1981.PR16 in this fonds). The project is recorded through drawings and textual records dating from 1980-1981. The drawings are all reprographic copies, mostly of details, and are arranged within the textual materials. The textual records consist of correspondence, conference reports, tender documentation, pre-design planning, authority documents, inter-office letters, prequalification records and specifications. Box AP018.S1.1980.PR14.001 contains an index to the textual records, which was created by the office.
