The competition was organised by the Algeciras City Council. The firm identified this project as number 123. “The project attempts to express, with an architectural gesture, the beauty of the geography of Algeciras: the bay, the port, the Rock and the Straits of Gibraltar, the proximity of Ceuta and Africa, the cork-oak forests that surround the town. For this [Abalos & Herreros] propose a building that, from a single body, opens out into two towers from one great public viewing platform. This form has strategic holes giving onto the more notable topographical features, establishing a physical relationship with them, while the section is organized as a gradient of privacy that increases with height. An evanescent building apparently fragile appears to let one being stimulated by the effects of the climate and the atmospheric phenomenons with an appearance changing with the function of the hours of the day or the season. The challenge that the project architect Gonçalo Byrne faced was to maintain the structure of single-family housing with the outhouse or courtyard, the typology that the local populations requested, while making a large urban gesture. The proposal was based on two types of housing (the square and rectangular plans). This overcame the problem of the 36 percent slope in an architecturally striking manner, while it also managed to fulfil the major requirement inherent in any SAAL operation of minimizing costs. This project series documents a feasibility study for a convention centre in Toronto from 1972-1973. The office identified the project number as 7228. This project consisted of a study to evaluate the feasibility of various downtown sites to build a convention centre, particularly sites close to the CN Tower and Union Station. The project also included the design of the convention centre, establishing realistic project costs and testing the building criteria with governments and committees. The debate on whether the convention centre should be constructed lasted throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s. Parkin Architects Planners also investigated specific sites and refined the design in the late 1970s, under a different project number (see project series AP018.S1.1978.PR05 described in this fonds), and the project was later referred to as the Ontario Congress and Trade Centre. It should be noted that Congress Centre and Convention Centre are used interchangeably in the materials. Eventually, the building contract was given to another architectural firm and today is known as the Metropolitan Toronto Convention Centre. The project is recorded through drawings, presentation boards and textual records dating from around 1972-1977. The drawings consist of plans, elevations, sections, diagrams and sketches, while the textual records include press clippings, project notes, correspondence, the feasibility report, conference reports, and the project proposal. Parkin's new firm Parkin Architects Planners, had been commissioned by the government Department of Transport Air Services to complete more than a dozen projects at the Toronto International Airport, including terminals one and two. This project consisted of the design of an area to accommodate pre-clearance screening to the US, which was located between fingers one and two at terminal one. The area is referred to as a node, and contained washrooms, customs areas, immigration areas, and a duty free that was accessible to international traffic. Many gates at terminal one had to be redesignated to accommodate this new facility. The project is recorded through drawings and textual records dating from 1978. The drawings are largely reprographic copies of floor plans and site plans, with sections of the original terminal one building included. Some drawings in this project series were created by the architectural firm Searle, Wilbee, Rowland, which was one of the names used for Parkin's firm after the merger of John B.
