"The Burndy Library in Norwalk, Connecticut, was founded in 1936, a 'collection of original source materials embracing the major contributions to science in the book and pamphlet form in which they were first published.' The collection has flourished since then and is now some several thousand volumes strong. Ben Dibner, the Director of the Library, has judiciously selected 200 of these titles as the heralds of science, those volumes that are conspicuous landmarks in the history of man's knowledge. His list is impressive, including Robert Boyle's Experiments and Notes about the Electricity (1675), the first book on electricity in English; the Cartesian paper which originally formulated cogito ergo sum; Riuni's 1599 monograph, the first to deal exclusively with the anatomy of an animal other than man, in which he established a pattern for subsequent anatomical studies; Galileo's Discourse on the Two Sciences, considered the first modern textbook in physics, in which he presented the concept of inertia, and certain general principles regarding falling bodies and projectiles. In the interest of both ease and accessibility, Dibner has arranged his selections in eleven categories: Astronomy, Botany, Chemistry, Electricity and Magnetism, General Science, Geology, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics, Technology and Zoology. For each of the volumes selected Dibner notes the author, title, date and place of publication, and gives a short commentary to establish historical perspective. Many of the woodcuts and illustrations from the early editions are also reproduces." –Publisher.
